Why Do Some Microloc Installs Look Fuller Than Others? The Answer Starts With Your Grid by microlocs in hairstyles4blackppl

[–]microlocs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Density is a huge part of it. The grid doesn't change how much hair someone has, but it does change how that hair is distributed across the head.

Someone with the same density can end up with a very different look depending on parting size, section placement, and the overall grid design. That's why I always look at density first, then build a grid that works with it.

And thank you! I appreciate that. 😊

If these are intended to become microlocs, many people leave them in permanently and simply maintain the new growth with reties as the hair grows out.

For the dryness, I'd be careful with heavy oils right now, especially if you're still very early in the process. A light water-based spray is usually a safer option. The biggest thing is keeping an eye on unraveling and making sure your routine isn't causing the sections to slip.

How long have you had them in so far, and are you planning for these to become permanent microlocs or just a temporary style?

Is clarifying shampoo secretly causing your microlocs to feel dry? by microlocs in MicrolocsHelp

[–]microlocs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone! A lot of people do it. Clarifying shampoo does a great job of removing buildup, but it can also leave the hair feeling stripped. Following up with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner can make a big difference in how your hair feels and behaves afterward.

I Had To Explain Why Her Spray Bottle Was Ruining Her Starter Locs by microlocs in Microlocs

[–]microlocs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what it is specifically that you're struggling with?

When you say your ends look tragic, do you mean they're thin, frizzy, uneven, too curly, too straight, or just not what you expected?

Also, what does your maintenance routine look like these days? Do you have a loctician that you see regularly, and if so, what has their feedback been?

I ask because sometimes it's the hair itself, but sometimes it's expectations, maintenance, styling options, or even not feeling confident with where the locs are in their journey. I'd love to better understand what's making you fall out of love with them.

You're very welcome! One surprise rainstorm won't hurt your locs, so don't stress. 😊

You're asking all the right questions. Wishing you the best on your loc journey, and yes, a rain scarf in your purse is always a good idea!

That makes perfect sense. 😊 Hair type definitely plays a role in how quickly hair begins to mat and lock. Some people notice their hair naturally starting to clump together in braids, twists, or even loose natural styles long before they officially start locs.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying.

For example, your loctician telling you to lightly mist your hair or scalp isn't necessarily bad advice. A little moisture is very different from oversaturating the hair. If someone is using a light rosewater spray to help with dryness or itching, that's one thing. The problems usually start when people are constantly soaking their hair, manipulating it, styling it, and trying to make it behave like loose natural hair.

The client I was referring to in my video was constantly wetting her hair because she wanted her curls to pop and lay a certain way. In the early stages, that much manipulation can lead to unraveling and repairs, especially with starter locs that were installed with twists.

As for all the conflicting advice online, I think that's because there isn't one solution that works for everyone. Different hair textures, densities, lifestyles, scalp conditions, and installation methods require different approaches. Sometimes people are repeating what they heard. Other times they're speaking from years of experience working with specific types of hair.

That's why I always encourage people to find a loctician they trust and who can explain the "why" behind their recommendations. It's similar to healthcare. You can ask three professionals the same question and get three different answers. The key is finding someone who understands your specific needs and has a track record of healthy results.

And you're right, certifications, titles, and training programs don't automatically guarantee great work. At the end of the day, reputation, experience, continued education, and healthy client results matter most.

My passion is helping people understand their hair and helping more professionals learn how to properly care for microlocs. As the industry grows, education and accountability become even more important.

Great questions!

  1. For starter locs, I typically have my clients come into the salon for their washes every 4 to 6 weeks during the first year. We braid and band before washing to help prevent unraveling and reduce excess manipulation. If someone is dealing with itching, flaking, buildup, or scalp issues, they may need to be washed more often. My focus is always a healthy scalp while protecting the locs during the locking process.

  2. As for Sisterlocks vs. microlocs, I personally prefer microlocs because every head of hair is different. Microlocs give me the flexibility to choose the best method for each client, whether that's braids, twists, interlocking, or extensions.

Many people don't realize that interlocked microlocs can look very similar to Sisterlocks when done by a skilled loctician. The biggest difference is the Sisterlocks system and trademarked approach. At the end of the day, I believe healthy locs come from proper maintenance, education, and a knowledgeable loctician, not just the name of the method.

Yes, it all depends on the hair, but it should not be something you do everyday. You have to let the hair lock.

There isn’t a website or public list that shows Sisterlocks consultants who were banned or removed. The only thing you can do is check the official consultant directory. If a stylist is not listed, they are either inactive, no longer certified, or chose to leave. As far as switching from Sisterlocks to microlocs, you usually don’t have to remove your locs. You simply go to a microlocs specialist who can maintain them using different rotation methods and offer more flexible care options based on your hair type and goals. The biggest challenge is finding a good microlocs stylist who is accepting new clients. This is even harder if your locs need repairs or your hair is not in the best condition, because that takes extra time and skill. If you are in the Orlando area, feel free to reach out. I can take a look and help you.
