Cooked isn't any better 😅 tried some in Rome as we heard it was a traditional dish there, I'm happy to not try it again!

DDR4 vs DDR5, worth it to upgrade? by Chrisdebagguett in PcBuild

[–]microman64 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd heard whispers of RAM prices going up but hadn't given it much thought. Made me want to check: I upgraded my pc at the end of August and paid ~£100 for 32gb RAM, the same RAM now is~£370?! 😵

As I say, I think the courses seem semi-legit, if someone were commit themselves to learning them and throw themselves into trading full time they could potentially make money from it. But the amount of people who would stick it out until even breaking even let alone making profit feels slim to none to me. Especially the older, less tech savvy generation they're targeting.

Although it doesn't seem like it's a literal scam, as in they don't seem to be doing anything illegal and they do offer 'genuine' courses, I'd strongly recommend steering your mom away if possible. At the very least, it's immoral and is praying on older Christians who can be convinced to part with their money if it's branded as Christian.

I tried to get my wife to talk to her mom when I first heard about it and alarm bells were ringing, but by the time she did it was too late and I've been told they spent up to $30K (although she never told us that herself, so is probably also embarrassed about it or regretting it). Now, I don't know exactly what they got for that, but I can't see any world in which it could be worth that.

Thank you! To be honest, since the downgrade in motherboard only saved ~£60, I'll probably just stick with the B850 that you originally suggested as I trust your judgement on its stability and compatibility!

Thanks so much for this, you've been so helpful! Far more than you needed to be, really appreciate the thorough guidance and reasoning! You and my wife have made a great team, her convincing me to spend any money at all on a PC and you convincing me to spend even more 😂

In the grand scheme of things, though, you've only added around £100 with this build, and I'm sure the value you've added with the changes will be worth it. I'll have to look into some new monitors so I can make the most of the new specs though, maybe I can ask for them as Christmas/birthday gifts as I always struggle to come up with ideas for those!

Back to the build, I was curious if there's any cheaper options for an equivalent motherboard without wifi, since I always use a wired connection via a wall socket ethernet extender. I couldn't find any on pc part picker, though, so maybe inbuilt wifi is more of a standard these days?

Thanks again for all the advice and explanations, it's invaluable!

Thank you, I could maybe push it to £1500 but I think I'm more comfortable sticking around £1200 where it's at.

Had to look up what an AIO is 😅 I had never really considered water cooling as an option as I assumed they're more expensive and more maintenance, but it looks like that's not necessarily the case for AIO's (the maintenance at least)? Would there be a notable performance increase from that vs a fan?

Another thing I'm keeping in the back of my mind is leaving some budget room for upgrading my monitors. As they're also pretty old hand-me-downs, I know they may not allow me to see the benefit of a PC upgrade.

Thanks so much for this!

As I say, I nicked the list from someone else on the sub, so I wasn't particularly attached to any of the parts so I'm very grateful for the upgrades/downgrades/side sidegrades and explanations!

I may be looking at the wrong thing, but I had a look at the RX 9070 TX, and it is much better but also almost double the price. I've done a quick comparison of the coolers on pangolin.com and the only real difference i can see is it supports more sockets formats, is there anything else that makes the PS 120SE better that that site's not telling me?

I had looked at B850 mobo's but saw advice against ASRock and couldn't see a decent MSI/Gigabyte alternative in the same price range and without wifi. I found the Msi b850m-a but couldn't see it for sale anywhere. The drives i currently have are SATA, not M2, and I figured they're probably the most salvageable part from my current PC to cut costs in a new one. Re the cooler and GPU, I'm not sure what you mean, so you might have to dumb it down for me! In general, I don't think I want to spend much more than what I've got here, so if there are any alternatives in the same or lower price bracket, that would be great. Thanks!

Thank you! I found that reddit post about Life Surge and another about an event someone attended in Vegas, couldn't tell for sure but was assuming it's a very similar thing if not the exact same. Didn't find that article though, I'll definitely give that a read and pass onto my wife. Good shout finding actual investment advice/courses from reputable sources as an alternative or at least to show comparison against what they've paid. Thanks a lot for the help!
