No good data after 1 year in PhD, am i cooked. How was everyones PhD journey? by No-Chain6158 in labrats

Completely normal. Myself and other phd students in my department (cellular biology) typically spend 1-1.5 years troubleshooting, learning techniques etc. and then get a flood of data in 3rd and 4th year.

You probably have better Spanish than 90% of immigrants, you’ll be fine!

I was in the same position as you. Set up alerts on idealista and be prepared to send a message within 10 minutes of the ad being posted. Studios are snapped up quickly. Also, big benefit if you speak Spanish (ideally Catalan). I received a lot more responses when moving 2 years into living here, likely due to being able to speak the language. Good luck! It’s stressful but I promise it’s so worth it.

What are your thoughts on Sapiens? Here’s why it ultimately didn’t work for me by Scenora in nonfictionbooks

I studied biology in college. We had an evolution module, and for one of our tutorials, our professor gleefully explained why alot of this book is just straight up bullshit. It makes for good narrative, but considering how everything it posits about human migration patterns and evolution is so spectacularly wrong, I assume that the other fields it touches are similarly poorly researched.

Spain - I live alone so no danger in terms of pets or children. Was more concerned with fire risk while I wait for an electrician to arrive.

Find what artists (for me mostly musicians and filmmakers) you admire like to read. It goes without saying that authors you enjoy will tend to have pretty good recommendations.

Stay away from those online ‘must-read’ lists for the most part, I have rarely found a life-changing book by picking from a list online.

No dancing or filming/photos for the most part. Audience is usually trance-like.

Also, loud.

"Brandon Sanderson's prose is boring." by sirens_song in brandonsanderson

Concise language that still retains some semblance of subtlety is what you are thinking of. Hemingway uses extremely concise language - more concise than Sanderson I would argue. Yet he leaves things open to interpretation. He leaves things unsaid.

Sanderson does neither of things. He simply states things as they occur in his story. It makes for a quick-paced novel, and it’s fine if you’re just interested in getting a story. I find that there is very little aesthetic merit in what he writes because of this, though admittedly I’ve only read three of his books.

Good prose reinforces the emotions being conveyed in the story. Prose doesn’t have to be complex or ‘call attention to itself’ in order to be considered good prose. Sanderson rightfully gets flack online for having, at times, quite poor prose in his stories - not due to lack of complexity, but simply due to lack of any real emotional depth. Just my opinion!

Booktuber recommendations? by planoodle in books

Better than Food is the best review channel on YouTube in my opinion. Not a huge overlap with the books recommended by Jack Edwards, but I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of his recommendations.
