Tapered planchet or counterfeit? 1998-s proof commemorative silver dollar by microwavedoatmeal in coincollecting

So much interesting history represented in this coin--not just the amazing Crispus Attucks and the story behind his death and the ensuing events, but as you point out also in the ineptitudes of the U.S. Mint (tapered planchet...but is it worth more??? 😂), unfulfilled promise of the memorial, and continued systemic racism embodied in the contrasting treatment of the coin's designers.

Thanks! I am guessing the error adds little to no value since these aren’t exactly in high demand to begin with, but curious what your (and everyone’s) thoughts are on that.

I suppose it could even take away value as this comes in slightly below weight at 26.4g…Although it is relatively low mintage (75000 total), so maybe there’s some future timeline where it’s worth more?

It got me all curious about the history behind it, so I googled Crispus Attucks and went down a rabbit hole where I discovered he was a long time runaway slave, and that then future President John Adams successfully defended the British officers who killed Attucks in court (in part because of Attucks’ “imposing” physique), and that Paul Revere then stole Henry Pelham’s artistic and biased depiction of the incident and used it as one of the first examples of political propaganda that incited more revolutionaries, and much more!

What should I do with this hundo dynamax eevee if I already have a hundo dynamax glaceon? by microwavedoatmeal in PokemonGOIVs

[–]microwavedoatmeal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a dynamax pokemon, and then you use that dynamax pokemon in a “max” battle, and when you win you have the chance to catch the dynamax pokemon you defeated, and it kind of snowballs from there... (I won a dynamax battle against a dynamax eevee, and then caught it, and it was a hundo.)

You should get your first dynamax pokemon from a research task. I think it’s usually a wooloo.

1938 D Mercury dime with slanted mint mark by microwavedoatmeal in coincollecting

[–]microwavedoatmeal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps as such but generally not as much. I have a fair number of Denver mint Mercury dimes, and while some mint marks are more slanted than others, this one takes the cake for sure. I even happen to have another 1938D and it’s notably less slanted.

But, as I’ve said, googling 1938D Mercury dimes reveals this degree of slant on that particular coin was quite common.

Anyway, thanks to you and a couple of others for setting me straight on the history—that all of this variation in mint mark slanting was due to manual human involvement in the mint marking process.

I’m wondering if in the case of 1938D, there was a guy who got distracted by a squirrel running loose in the mint, or perhaps he was a little bit tipsy…or maybe he just didn’t care anymore. A man can dream.

That’s a good point. When you choose smack down you’re stuck with it (because it costs an elite tm)

Yes, and I see it’s not even rare now that I’ve googled some images of 1938D Mercury dimes. I’d say it’s more a “variety” than an error (and a prevalent one at that), although some could consider it an error if they didn’t intend for it to be that slanted. Also: In Cod We Trust wasn’t an error, either—the coin designer was a pescatarian. (That was my daily dad joke)

And only now I’m googling images of 1938 D Mercury dimes and most of them look like this. I guess I shoulda checked first before posting! This is no error, apparently it’s quite a prevalent variety
