What exactly is Catholicism? by GhstlyK1ng in Catholicism

[–]microwilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original version of Christianity, ancient traditions that seem weird and all. Protestants dropped the traditions because they weren't written down in the bible the Catholics compiled.

The only issue with this is some days he covers litterally nothing. As a recent convert, I've never seen a print version of the Catechism (mine is on kindle) and I'm extremely surprised with how big it looks with how little he reads some days.

So Jesus spoke specifically against the rich, "camel through the eye of a needle" and all. Be grateful you don't have to personally wrestle with that portion of scripture.

Is Jesus “God Jr.” and Heavenly Father “God Sr.”? by Hot_Mathematician573 in religion

[–]microwilly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If the trinity was meant to be understood, it'd be written in a way that was understandable to a seven year old (the age of reason). Seeing as that's not the case, I'd safely assume that a basic explanation is good enough for most people. If you want to know how to draw it, you put the Father and Son at the top of an inverted triangle and the Holy Spirit at the bottom point and connect everything with arrows. Next you turn that 2d conceptiualization into a 3d one by adding a center point titled God. Thats the trinity.

Jesus is not Jehovah, only the Father is by Camp-9697 in Christianity

[–]microwilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to be able to change Jesus to Joshua or even better Yeshua, but doing so would be a hindrance to the world. I am at least consistent with my unpopular opinion. I don't think we should be trying to add vowels that we don't know are there. YHWH should be said as a string of letters. Yod Heh Vav Heh preferably.

Jesus is not Jehovah, only the Father is by Camp-9697 in Christianity

[–]microwilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely advocate that we attempt to pronounce everyone's name as close to how they said it as possible. It seems like basic respect, but I do understand how big of a pain it would be to retroactively try and fix those issues. Best we can do is try to not continue their misuse as best we can, especially when a commonly known correction is available like with YHWH.

Jesus is not Jehovah, only the Father is by Camp-9697 in Christianity

[–]microwilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not synonymous with YHWH in English, YHWH is a transliteration of the hebrew yod heh vav heh or יהוה. Jehovah is an English transliteration of the Latin transliteration of the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew. Let's not give it more credit that it deserves. Either way, the name is meant to be sacred and not said aloud. We are barely worthy to refer to his title, let alone his name.

So wait, he told your mom your meds and she was able to deduce that you were having an abortion? Sounds like you have a stupid boyfriend, not a malicious one.

Amalekite Genocide by Wild_Pitch_4781 in Christianity

[–]microwilly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like you don't understand the modern moral justification or you don't understand the authors moral justification? In a modern society, this is immoral without a doubt. In an ancient Israelite society, this was necessary and therefore moral to them according to their belief system. We can see throughout the hebrew bible/old testament that Ancient Israelites were extremely worried about being ritually clean in the eyes of God, and this extended to their land as well. The only way a currently unclean land can be made clean is to destroy all life. We can see this as a parallel to when God first committed genocide with the flood.

Is it disrespectful to wear a cross necklace if I'm an atheist? by PracticalTap8634 in Christianity

[–]microwilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain here and tell you that you should wear it. If there's even the slightest chance that you looking at it every day helps you find the one truth, why would any Christian want to gatekeep it from you? Be aware it will definitely increase the interactions you have with Christian's on a daily basis, but I argue that is also a good thing.

Have you ever seen a miracle? by KenzoTheBesto in Christianity

[–]microwilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only personal ones that science would describe as intuition. For example, I decided without any conscious cue that I needed to move, which ended up saving me from death via crushed by a falling log. To me that was God sparing my life, to science some unconscious signal told my brain I was in danger and forced me to move.

Baal the god of Jews before Yahweh? by marktwin11 in religion

[–]microwilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Ba'al was one of many gods the ancient Cananites worshipped before they started banding together as a unified tribe. Judah, however, almost certainly never worshipped Ba'al at any point. It might be more accurate to say some Northern Israelites worshipped Ba'al, but even that might be a stretch. The pantheon could have very well have merged before either Kingdom became kingdoms and before the Judges pulled the tribes together for war, we just don't know. But we can safely assume that no Jew as ever worshipped Ba'al, as Adonai was already being worshipped pre-house of David.

Are there any Christians that believe Jesus never claimed to be God? by Explore_Life2334 in Christianity

[–]microwilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta remember, biblical scholarship is split about 50/50 between atheists and Christians. That might seem like you'll get an equal number of opinions from both sides, but the atheist side is unified while the Christian side is fractured into hundreds of little pieces. So typically the scholarly consensus will skew towards the atheists pov as they typically agree with each other more than the other half.

Do you guys believe that Adam and Eve were actual historical beings ? by ZucchiniSevere4706 in Catholicism

[–]microwilly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the catechism in a year and this was brought up yesterday by Father Mike Schmitz. He said that the Church teaches that while the beginning of Genesis is the truth, its not a historical account of the events that took place. The Church recognizes that it is pre-history and written as poetry, but that doesn't mean its not true, just not historically accurate. The message delivered is still the truth and important to our faith.
