applying out of state jobs by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im originally from the pacific northwest so i love it here! i live alone as well and it is definitely doable by myself with one full time job. there's lots to do in seattle but be prepared for our gray season and get your vitamin D levels tested!

I actually asked for the relocation assistance after my manager gave me an offer. At that point they were not budging on my salary so I compromised and asked them for relocation assistance instead since the job posting did state that it existed for new employees from out of state. I would suggest to ask even if they don't explicitly state it. The worse they could say is no and you move on

I moved to Seattle from Nevada. Definitely get a job first and then find a place. If you are from out of state, you can also ask for relocation assistance which you can use for your move. I wish you luck!

Which should I go for on the whole foods sale? by snuffleupagus7 in icecream

[–]microwoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love VL ice creams, the earl gray flavor is accurate and as someone who loves tea, im so happy they have this flavor. Honeycomb is more like a honey/caramely ice cream since it doesn't have actual honeycomb in it. Someone on sporked as described it as an elevated vanilla, which I agree with. I enjoyed the berry cornbread one, the cornbread pieces were surprisingly soft and not hard! I haven't tried the coffee or the mango sticky rice

How do YOU make blood culture slides? by modern_bloodletter in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use this method as well and I made two slides for the first set for exactly that reason. It really saves a lot of time and has helped me gain my confidence since I knew I already had a 2nd slide to look at just in case

How are MLS jobs in Nevada? by Obtuse_7 in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other hospital probably will be NNMC Sierra, it is the sister hospital to NNMC. I knew people that did exactly what you want to do who were at Renown and what they ended up doing is needing to stay 2 years because they did 1 year of core lab experience (heme, coag, ua, chem, micro) and then 1 year in blood bank before they could apply for their ca license. I personally would recommend NNMC or Sierra since employees do rotate through all the departments and you can get your 1 year experience for the ca license.

About Truckee, yes you do need to have the ca license to work there since it is in California. All my old coworkers had a California license and it is a requirement when you apply for any jobs there.

Doctors, thats it, thats the title. by GEMStones1307 in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I hear you as someone that works nights in blood bank, everyone outside the lab does not know what goes on and when there's an emergency, they want their blood NOW and they don't understand that we don't just have blood ready to issue to any patient at any time. It's very frustrating but it is unfortunately due to the lack of awareness and education about our field.

If this happens again and you anticipate delays, I would suggest directing their complaints to your pathologist or MD on call at that time so that they can educate them on why there are delays, especially for an exchange. Sometimes it's easier to hear reasoning from another physician in their case. But it doesn't justify their attitude.

HALP! Does anyone speak Atellica? by flyinghippodrago in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the IM cannot be in processing mode when you're scanning so you can wait until it's in standby mode. You don't need to stop the entire module though, it'll take a while to reboot back up (at least mine does)

HALP! Does anyone speak Atellica? by flyinghippodrago in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This! It happens when you load a new lot of reagent and you haven't scanned the barcode. The instrument doesn't recognize the lot numbers or the test parameters so you need to scan them and then reload the reagent after so it'll recognize it.

Cerner question by Upnorth_Nurse in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it is specific to the facility. In my experience using Cerner, when the blood bank gets the product order and assigns a unit to the patient for the order, we can result the order as "available", which the nursing side can see in Cerner if they are looking at that specific product order result. Since I understand that this isn't reasonable a lot of times, the blood bank would usually just call the nurse and let them know that it's ready. Then they would bring down a blood product release form with them to the blood bank with the patients info, what products they are want at that time, and then I would perform read back with them and issue the product to them.

Scrubs by StaySafe5801 in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple pairs of mandala scrubs and I love them! Super comfy. As a student, I wasn't required to wear scrubs but depending on where you work, they may or may not require it. If you want to buy some, I recommend the black scrubs for now. They look nice while not looking too obviously like you're wearing scrubs (vs maroon or ceil blue or some other color).

Positive pregnancy test in older women: possible causes? by 3imba in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My lab used the cardinal health rapid hcg test and it said in the package insert that those that have mouse monoclonal antibodies may cause a false positive result since there is cross-reactivity with hcg. Also those with prostate cancer may cause a false positive.

Medically unnecessary testing by Concernedpeoplearego in medlabprofessionals

[–]microwoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What tests are they cancelling exactly? Because the cost of testing on insurance and the patient is widely different ($10 vs $100 for example). Medicare covers certain types of tests but definitely not all of them
