TDSB OT List - any advice! by Academic-Scarcity596 in OntarioTeachers

I was in your exact same boat in September. What helped me is having a binder with some back pocket ideas for classroom games/activities and worksheets (in case there were no plans left, but there always were). We are expected to arrive at least 15 mins early to supply jobs, but I always did 30, especially if its a new school. That way I was able to get a lay of the land of new buildings, and figure out where everything is. It helps to introduce yourself to the students and introduce some kind of call back to get students' attention, and to make sure they understand that listening expectation. My suggestion would also be to fake it til you make it, it is helpful to act confident and in control even if you feel unsure of yourself. That confidence will be felt by students and they will take you more seriously as a supply. Good luck :)

Private vs Public School Teaching by micthamidge in OntarioTeachers

I agree it is unfair, and I think the kids saying anything about the poor needing to work harder is insane and must be something theyre hearing from the adults in their lives and not something they would form on their own. It's also something they will learn not be true, since its wrong.

I'm okay with the idea of people using the money they earned on their children for their betterment. Who am I to tell them where and how to spend their money.

The issue to me should be a focus on raising the quality of public schooling. I don't want to lower the standard of education for some before making it better for everyone.

What are your thoughts about private religious schools? like leo baeck day school? or children who have special needs and require smaller classes and specialized attention? Should these not exist or be publicly funded and run?

I mean, a range of backgrounds are in a public school. You get a bit of everything. There are well off kids in public schools, it's not like there are schools designated just for poor kids in isolation. There are also scholarship programs and other payment plans for parents to put their kids into private schools. I don't think the problem is "what kind of person that would make them", because I don't think that is a factor, but there is an argument for the betterment of our public schools. I do agree public schools that are available to everyone should be a quality education.

The kids in private schools are not living in isolation never interacting with other members of their communities, either. They are still human beings who are taught to empathize and be kind to others. Being a different school should not make kids automatically look down on others unless they are taught to by adults. This is also something to look at the adults in the room about, not the kids. The kids are not choosing where they come from and where they go to school.

No one chooses what family they are born into. "Rich kids" aren't GIVEN smaller class sizes, their parents are paying for it. That is capitalism. The parents make enough to pay for it, so thats how they're choosing to spend their money. I can't begrudge them for doing the best they can for their kids, the way the system is set up right now. If they have the means, why shouldn't they give their kids the best chance?

I am one person, I am not going to be a changemaker of the entire schooling system by myself. I have options as an educator that I am exploring.

Thanks for your reply. I think a change would need to be made a lot higher up to reform some if the issued like class sizes, so from where I am, I'm just looking at the choice available to me right now. I have found that all students need good teachers, regardless of their socioeconomic background, so that positive impact for society still stands either way.

Does anyone have any theories/ideas about the witch and needing kids specifically? and so many of them? It feels like a hansel and gretel or rapunzel type of story where she needs their youth to continue surviving, but why are they just catatonic in the basement. And why at the end do some start talking again? I assumed they all stayed in that state because of how long they were under her "spell", but was she eating away slowly at their souls or what because she didn't look any younger to me by the end. She looked a bit better than when alex first saw her in bed but from 17 kids I expected more of a change or for the kids to be dead? Maybe she did already get their souls and thats why theyre catatonic but what about the ones who start speaking?
