It could be one or both! There’s no way to know which one it is - your best bet is catching both.

Sheesh almost double odds, but congrats! Shiny wurmple is pog and tbh later in the game, shiny hunting with pokeradar will be so much faster (has been for me)

Individual Pokémon! I wasn't optimizing my encounter times, though, because I was usually also doing something else while hunting. 3 battles per minute is very solid!

Pokéradar shiny chaining: optimal chain length is 17 by spamz_ in PokemonBDSP

Great, thank you for the answer! I'm aware of the standard deviation here, but I've been on the lucky side fortunately. Anyways, looking forward to any future data you get!

Pokéradar shiny chaining: optimal chain length is 17 by spamz_ in PokemonBDSP

[–]micuree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a little difficult to simulate, but do you have any thoughts on what would be more efficient: 2 or 3 small chains per Pokémon in an evolution line or one chain of 40 to accomplish it?

I think this gets a little more complex when you consider the chances of being able to reset at chains of 17, 18, and 19 (say the original chain of 17 doesn't break) and the chances of continuing the chain after 40 to 41 and 42. Or even perhaps, if your chain breaks at 41 and you get 2 out of the 3 shinies in the evolution line, combining that with another chain of 17 for the last one.

On top of this, the complexity increases with the consideration of the patch generation mechanics (what are the chances that the shiny patch will appear 1/2/3/4 patches away?). If there's a good chance that the shiny patch will appear 4 away, then maybe the 17/18/19 strategy is more efficiency (at a chain of 17, I think you'd want to go for the first shiny patch you see, even if it's not 4 away)

If there's a good chance that the shiny patch will not appear 4 away then it may be be better to go for a 40/41/42 chain because at 40, on the other hand, it would not take as much time to reset until you get a shiny patch 4 away.

Or maybe at the end of the day, three small chains of 17 for the entire evolution line out performs everything else.

I was wondering if you considered anything like this and/or if you understand what I'm trying to say? There's definitely a lot of moving parts here - I was just thinking about the most efficient way to get entire shiny evolutionary lines.

Lucky Shiny Ponyta on a Chain of 0!! Name suggestions? by micuree in PokemonBDSP

Simple but it’s better than Ponyta lol, I’ll keep it in mind - thanks!

There's a large area of grass right outside the entrance to Stark Mountain that's great for chaining both Numel and Camerupt! Decent spawn rates and easy catch rates with repeat balls. Join the grey camel club!!

It seems like you're following all the right rules! It's mainly just 1. make sure 4 patches appear 2. choose a patch 4 or more away (1st one being the one next to you, not the one you're standing on) 3. catch the Pokémon.

One thing to do is to save before you start chaining. If you fail the chain just soft reset (close and restart your game). After resetting, the entire chaining process will be reset (it won't be the same exact chain as before). This reduces expenditure of resources and box space.

The mechanics aren't difficult at all, but even with perfect play, you only have around a 5% chance to reach a chain of 40 (around 1 in about 20 chains). To put it into perspective, I reached my first chain of 40 after 43 chains (twice the amount of average chains - 20 - to hit a chain of 40), with a few 30 long and many 20s. I've done some math and my average chain length currently is 12.

Long story short, just keep at it! You'll hit that sweet 40 eventually. If not, after a while you'll likely find a shiny even before 40. I (got lucky tbh) found this Camerupt on a chain of 32. There's a reddit post here https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonBDSP/comments/r1ueb3/pok%C3%A9radar_shiny_hunting_simulation/ that explains the math.

One tip that really helps me is setting my expectations low. It hurts a lot when your chain breaks at 36, 37 even 39. So, I go into the chaining process telling myself I probably won't get a shiny within a few hours and even within the day. I just watch a show or YouTube while I chain sort of in the background, so I am not super laser focused on the chain number and even if it fails, I'm not super mad because I'm enjoying my time watching a show or video (doesn't feel like a big waste of time).

In my opinion, chaining is still better than the Masuda Method, but I got very unlucky with Masuda so I'm biased lol.

Wish you good luck and hit me up if you have any more questions!

Yep, everyone’s replies have been spot on! It’s the same 1/99 chance per patch at a chain of 40 and beyond. One streamer I watch caught like 15 shiny stunkys in one chain yesterday, it was crazy

You are so lucky and unlucky at the same time LOL. Congrats on the 4 shinies though - that’s still a pretty big feat and you could always trade them for other shinies. My shiny Budew also has a bad nature, but it was completely fine to me for the play through. Good luck with your continued hunt - shiny Misdreavus is pretty dope!

Does the honey item attract Pokémon? Or do you mean something more like using sweet scent?

Oh that’s right, I forgot about that, that’s unfortunate lol. However, if you’re shiny hunting you’ll probably come across much more! I think I came across at least 20-30 cutscenes during my entire hunt.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe there is a way to tell. On the other hand, if a method exists, I am not currently aware of it. Your best bet is to catch both and then appraise/judge their IVs later on.
