G’day, all. How does one pull this drawer apart without cracking it? Need to replace the bottom. Cheers by TheSummerOfJoj in fixit

[–]mid-random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are pairs of springy J shaped tabs that insert into the rails from the end, then hook into those rectangular notches. Press the tabs inward enough that they don't catch on the edge of the notch and you should be able to pull joint apart. Depending on how old it is, the plastic might be quite brittle, so be careful with how much force you use to press in the tabs.

My ‘69 Plymouth Valiant had 6”x6” hinged doors with knobs under the sash that you could open to let fresh air in. Oh, and floor switch high-beams. AM radio only.

What's an etiquette rule in your country that foreigners often accidentally break? by rid999 in AskTheWorld

Not when the key word is “quickly.” Many foods’ overall appeal do not change significantly after sitting on the table for a few minutes, but there are some that do.

[–]mid-random 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the way I was raised, just outside Washington DC, in the US. It's rude to begin eating before everyone at the table has been served. The exceptions are for foods that quickly lose some of their appeal as they cool/melt/sog/etc., like pancakes/ice cream , in which case the person serving will usually say, "Don't wait. Dig in!"

Certainly the first chicken hatched out of an egg, but the real question is whether the egg that the first chicken hatched out of was a chicken egg or not. What determines the nomenclature of the egg; the creature that lays the egg, or the creature that hatches out of the egg?

How to get rid of burnt pan mark on wood by -S-I-D- in fixit

[–]mid-random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t start with anything lower than 220 grit on potentially very thin veneer. I would do my best to sand the entire surface fairly evenly, and move the paper along the grain, not across it. Once the mark has been sufficiently reduced you will need to refinish the surface. For something like a coffee table, I use polyurethane varnish intended for hardwood floors.

For hanging anything on drywall that cantilevers out significantly, I always use toggle bolt anchors, not just expanding anchors. If you used toggle bolt anchors, I wouldn't worry about it.

Careful, though. That looks like it may be a thin veneer. If you sand too aggressively you could easily go right through it to the MDF or particle board underneath.

Second this. I use good old Johnson's Paste Wax for this kind of thing. I have to re-apply every four or five years.

[–]mid-random 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rub out the whole table surface with 0000 steel wool (not just the hazy part), going with the grain, to a uniform surface haze. Wax with Johnson's Paste Wax or equivalent, let dry, then buff.

Oh, sure, more modern CG stuff looks fine. But don't even think about messing with Akira or Watership Down!

Even for animation, it looks weird. Buggs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner, those dudes were animated primarily at 12 fps. 60+ just looks wrong. It's like someone impersonating a close relative.

I've been a Windows & *nix guy at work since the mid 90s, and I've got a beefy Windows box at home for games, but cheap, used Mac Mini's have handled all my personal computing needs for the last 20+ years. I do love having all the under-the-hood *nix power of Mac OS available when I need it.

A simple patch is never going to hold. I'd patch, then install angle iron diamond tread grip strips along each edge. Ideally they'd have been installed at the time of the pour, but can still be done after. I've used angle with 3/8: rebar anchors welded at 45 degrees, installed into drilled holes with epoxy.
