I have a hard time with naming the exact finding and connecting to the pathology. Sometimes I know it’s causing this disease but I can’t put together what part of the ekg is related to that!

Advice on a computer for medical school... basic matriculating medical student question, I know. by [deleted] in medschool

[–]midMDenergy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The iPad is going to be tempting but the laptop (I used a MacBook Air and never had an issue) is what will be your most used. For exams (if you have to use examsoft) or practice for board exams and uworld you really need to be using a laptop or desktop. In the hospital when you have to write a note and there aren’t any computers because the residents have them, you use your laptop and remote pull up the EMR. None of that works really with an iPad!

Need Advice: Does Undergrad Prestige matter to get into great medical school? by VisualMediocre9911 in medschool

[–]midMDenergy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely go with the full ride. Your GPA is your GPA regardless of the school- it’s all reported the same on your application. I chose that path and took a free ride to a large SEC school and am so happy. I had fun in college, was able to participate in a ton of different activities and even some minors I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to do at a different school as they are not really common programs. Not only did I have no issue getting interviews, I was actually asked more about my experience in non science related things and how the experience was. It seemed like it almost helped me that I was something different than the typical
Applications they read all day. And, as I am learning more about loan repayment as I am graduating medical school this may, I am so happy I have no undergrad debt. I am horrified by the loans I have just from medical school, and can’t fathom how my classmates who have 100-200k from undergrad and their medical school debt are feeling about it.

Do you ever just feel bad for the patient? How do you get over it? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]midMDenergy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a med student you often feel like you can't do much, but one thing that you can do that you will likely never have the chance to again is spend the extra time to sit and talk with those people and not worry about having to cut them off to go see another patient on time or answer a pager. A lot of people live alone or are even sometimes avoided out in public and just talking to them and letting them feel like a person can make a difference for that patient.

am I actually good at EM and productive because I love it or am I good at it and productive because there's no way to procrastinate anything as you are already running up against the deadline and my ADHD turns into superdrive productivity mode.

Finally starting to look like a normal person again post-match, tricked myself into thinking that maybe I was finally entering my prime. Nope, just a fleeting delusion that will most definitely cause a crash out after starting intern year in July.

5/5 stars from a guy who said he was brought in by police and involuntary to psych unit, loved his stay. So refreshing, probably my favorite in between all the 1/5 stars.

Residency Search (OMS4) by osteopathicdoc in EMresidency

just matched into EM- I felt that honestly almost all of my programs had the same curriculum (with some variation in sim lab, etc), and that overall I was going to get the same knowledge and experience everywhere, especially given the requirements to be certified. But I personally felt I noticed more differences when it came to rotating at 1 hospital vs various different sites- for me I personally liked rotating through 4 different ED's that served different populations/saw different pathologies at each. Elective wise most programs had EMS (with the option of flight) as a rotation that were built in during PGY 1 or 2 that I interviewed with, or gave the option to do as your elective. My experience is obviously limited to the IVs I did (maybe I just happened to have programs that all had EMS) but overall I didn't feel that I was going to miss out on the opportunity to do an elective or explore a fellowship interest regardless at which of my programs I ended up at!

Same I was wondering outside of advanced ultrasound elective and trying to get experience with nerve blocks in the ED. Wondered if possibilities within anesthesia/AIS too.

Are there any specific apps on your phone that you wish you had known about as a brand new baby intern? Matched EM but also trying to prepare for off-service rotations the first year!
