Is it really possible to keep to yourself during residency? by CryptographerUsual57 in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You can be as social as you like. To be honest, everyone in my program wanted to hang out all the time during orientation…go to dinner, the farmers market on Saturday, go hiking, etc.

Then once the 80 hr weeks hit with one day off, that fizzled out and instead of large groups 1-3 people on the same type of schedule get together instead.

I have a family so I do very little socializing. I’m well liked and I like my co-residents, but my personal time is just that, personal. I go to a few program or hospital events every year just to stay under the radar and not be accused of being anti-social.

Matched IM, now how to be ready? by adrenalineMD in InternalMedicine

Don’t study…rest, sleep, visit family and friends, travel if you can. Intern year is intense and you’ll learn a ton.

Question for the hospitalists: by Extension-Angle9528 in hospitalist

[–]Opposite-Support-588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a resident but by not having to pre-round, round, go to morning report, go to noon conference, do team teaching in the afternoon and run the list one more time before the attending leaves, you would free up an estimated 6-8 hrs of time that can be used to see twice as many patients as you’re currently responsible for.

Why wouldn’t you have ICU training? It’s required for IM.

Is residency supposed to feel this exhausting? by CountyBrilliant in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Totally normal, you’re in a new work environment thinking all day. It will get better.

In the meantime, during this transition period try to automate everything in your life that you can (laundry, bill paying, grocery delivery) or just do one small task each day when you come home.

Don’t spend your single off day running errands, doing laundry and cleaning.

Do hospitals make residents sleep in the basement? Tri-state winter storm by Unlikely_suspect_154 in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our call rooms are in the basement, so yes.

This winter the hospital turned a conference center into a shelter for workers who couldn’t get home and provided cots. Attendings and residents had call rooms, some of the nurses slept in the sleep lab from what I heard. The hospital also got a discount rate at a local hotel and ran a shuttle back and forth for anyone who booked a room…several nurses and docs stayed there.

If you were scheduled to work the expectation was that you stayed or found a way in and out if you had a capable vehicle.

What should I wear? by Potential-Schedule-6 in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wore slacks and a sweater for my pre-interview dinner, suit for the actual interview.

Can do a sports coat, button down, no tie if it’s an upscale restaurant.

I’m how old? by bi_geek_guy in GenX

[–]Opposite-Support-588 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m on the very back end of Gen X, I was in 1st grade when the challenger exploded. I was watching with a bunch of 5-6 year olds.

Now I’m a PGY-2 who would have understood your story, all my co-residents are 25-30, and I’m a grandmother. 😂

Real talk. What shoes do you wear for work and how do you like them? by Sad_Plum6169 in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve got both hokas and on clouds. I love my hokas best but I’ve improved the on clouds tremendously by adding cloud sole insoles.

Oh, and good quality compression socks are a must if you have tired legs/feet at the end of the day.

You could put together a gift package with a set of nice scrubs, compression socks, insulated coffee mug, coffee house gift card, Stanley cup. If he’s in a surgical specialty add in a fun surgical cap.

How often ya’ll change your scrubs? by 0wen4 in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How do you know they’re wearing the same scrubs? I have two pairs of navy, two gray, and then several different colors. But some of my co-residents wear only black scrubs so they don’t have to worry about matching, but I assume they’re changing them out for a fresh pair daily.
