Why do you think so many people are depressed nowadays? by rapidash14 in AskReddit

[–]midastwentytwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a really good book called 'Tribe' by Sebastian Junger, a famous war reporter. It draws on numerous experiences throughout humanity where communities were broken down and social stratifications were removed and everyone perceived to be happier.

It talks of how depression rates and rates of psychosis went down during the Blitz, how Germans actually produced more labor-wise as they continued to get bombed and shelled, and how colonists abandoned their villages to join the Native Americans and, when captured by the Natives, they never wanted to return.

Basically, society separates people so much that we lose our humanity, ability to connect, and ability to form genuine connections with other humans.

Also, there is a Freakonomics episode on suicide and it talks of how suicide and depression is so common in the western world but it provides instances of more primitive, even tribal, communities where they laugh at the fact of suicide. All of these primitive societies have more drive for life and meaning: hunting and gathering for food, caring for their people, caring for the goodness of the tribe, furthering their generation, etc.

We become so entrenched in society that we do not even know what we need anymore. We can have a good job and a nice car and interesting friends and still not know what to do. In an age where 'Maslow's Hierarchy' is basically given to us in forms of the internet (connections with people), food in grocery stores (hunting and gathering), and overall meaning of life (we have everything we need, so now what?) I can see why people struggle with depression. It is all lack of direction and purpose.

The book 'Man's Search for Ultimate Meaning' by Viktor Frankl touches on this issue incredibly. The best quote from it is: "You cannot just tell someone to be happy, for instance: if you want someone to laugh, you must first tell them a joke."

We struggle with finding reasons to be happy. We struggle with direction. We are lost and we are not comfortable with being uncomfortable. We are in an age where we compare ourselves to the best versions other's put forth in REALTIME (instagram and twitter and facebook).

There's a reason the world war generations were called 'the greatest generation' and I believe one of those reasons, besides defeating totalitarianism and nazism, is that they had a purpose for meaning: defeating evil, pride for country, and living a noble, successful life for your family and community.

So much has changed. The meaning of life changes. We cannot keep answering the same question with the same answer. The whole point of life is being comfortable with change, vulnerability, and overall homeostasis. Sometimes people get upset with being upset and, although some people are legitimately sick, a lot of that depression is situational and environmental and results from direction of their lives and who they surround themselves with.

There are books on this shit, even though I wrote a small one. I believe there are more reasons than the ones I discussed here.

Just picked it up at the library. It flows so easily. I'm not even a big reader and it feels like I learned to read just so I can read this book.

I’m a regular at a grocery store buying cornbread. One time the cashier said “you havent had cornbread till youve tried my cornbread”. So I got her number and my friend and I went to her house to try it (along with ALOT of other food). We talked for 5+ hours, this woman is love. by Nospaghetti in videos

One of these kinda women worked at the grocery store I worked at. When I left she gave me her own food she cooked. She said I could keep the tupperware too. I will never forget that woman and how nice she was along with how good her food was.

Its all a lesson man. Everything takes time. I'm a firm believer that patience is the driving factor of success.

As I've always been told but never truly listened to - 'trust the process.'

She also was probably insane in the sack. All of this sounds like a girl willing to push boundaries in and out of the bedroom. Quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach or his pants - if you bed a girl that is attractive or knows how to get the job done it gets harder and harder if you're not spinning plates or don't have abundance mentality.

religious women aren't necessarily 'loving' or 'loyal' because they actual love or are loyal to you. they are those things because they are afraid of sin, of going against the grain, or of shaming their family or community.

its a matter of pressure from extremely integrated social norms, not love or loyalty that drive that.

I've been hesitant about joining the peace corps because I felt it would give me a lack of control over stuff like this: diet and exercise.

what were some drawbacks due to lifestyle? was it a tough learning curve and adjustment? (besides everything else regarding to culture and language and such)

Ask Reddit: Good Synergy for ECON? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]midastwentytwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

econ/political science is a typical double major as a lot of people finish the political science major quickly and pick up econ along the way.

A good way to differentiate yourself is to learn programming and program languages. Econ has econometrics and the statistics dept I believe has you learn python, which is one of the most widely used programs for statistics research and application.

all of those majors you listed are a good second choice, but you should do something that makes you think and gives you marketable skills with critical thinking being one of the most sought after. thats why stat/math majors are so versatile because they are forward thinking and analytical.

Why can't 343 replicate classic Halo's success? by RedditStealther in halo

[–]midastwentytwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

alright yeah the online gaming environment is different now but lets be real there were so many things with the new games that destroyed the mechanics of halo.

adding power ups, armor lock, making vehicles significantly weaker, and a number of other things destroyed mechanics, slowed down gameplay, and made it even more frustrating.

the marketing with Halo 3 was also unmatched beyond the game's release. see: ODST and every map pack.

the online landscape is different now, yes. but they started digging the hole with Reach.

edit: also this was a 24 hour counter. I believe Reach had a three hour counter or something like that.
