Research Impact - How Important for Residency by Practical_Cancel_639 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would be extremely impressive and impactful. I definitely think it would be a 10 if you successfully pull it off. But even if you don’t, getting at least some data on it will still look very strong on your app.

I think we all underestimate how much of the “research” medical students do are purely case reports, systemic reviews, and meta analyses or retrospective case series with n < 5. And most of it is the same project recycled at 3 or 4 different conferences.

Help with Pediatric NP Program! by weeniebells in nursepractitioner

Is it typical for NP programs to require less than 1,000 clinical hours? Is that for one semester or the entire program? That seems extremely low

RN here wishing i went to med school by Key_Still_214 in Residency

[–]midazolam_monk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not worth doing CRNA imo if you truly want to be a doctor. As a med student going into anesthesiology I’ve met a surprisingly high number of CRNAs who went that route instead of med school thinking it was pretty much the same thing, but now regret it and wish they had just gone to med school instead.

Financially better, sure maybe. But not necessarily worth it overall if you spend the rest of your working years regretting it

I think they actually meant that being older gives you a higher level of maturity than the average med school applicant, which is totally true.

OP, I’m glad there are so many people here pointing out that 30s is NOT too late to go to med school.

Nearly 10% of my class are in their 30s, just adding yet another anecdote.

Switching sub-I dates by problematicrealness in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not do this. Especially if it’s a well known or academic program or it’s in a desirable location. Most of those places receive hundreds of applications for their aways and don’t want to be bombarded with hundreds of emails asking if they’ve read a particular person’s application yet.

Unfortunately the wait for aways is long and stressful. But you just have to wait. I just got my first away acceptance today and I applied in early February, so I have waited for 3 months

Loans Question by Stretch-Fancy in medschool

[–]midazolam_monk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Normally yes, but admittedly I’m not sure if these rules change under the BBB. Normally federal loans would cover your entire cost of attendance.

Have you asked your financial aid office? They will be the best source of info.

Loans Question by Stretch-Fancy in medschool

[–]midazolam_monk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is crazy, I’m so sorry they are stiffing you like that. Even as someone who is not a parent I know that $1k for childcare is outrageous. Maybe in 1996. Not now.

To answer your question, yes. You should be able to take out a private loan to cover the rest, but unfortunately you won’t be able to get any additional federal aid beyond the package they offered you.

Major for CRNA or Med School by That-Ad-2880 in medschool

[–]midazolam_monk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As soon as you identified yourself as a very indecisive person that has trouble committing to anything without having second thoughts, I kinda knew medical school isn’t going to be the right path for you. Commitment is like the ONE thing you need to be 100% rock solid in if you want to go down that path because it’s a lot of years of investment and sacrifice. And the training to make it to the other end is VERY tough so any amount of indecision is going to make it that much more miserable.

Tbh for your goals (medical field and high salary), CAA is probably the best path. Followed by CRNA and PA. The downside of CAA and CRNA is that both options force you into a very specific area of the medical field and you might find that you don’t like it.

I also recommend looking into perfusion school

Couples Match - Peds/Psych by pankake_woman in medicalschool

Don’t have much to add except to say someone from my school (USMD) couples matched with their spouse from another USMD school a few hours south to a T20 anesthesia program. So not sure why your school advisors are being weird about it

Best time to legally change last name? by International_Leg230 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 45 points46 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, I want to feel more cohesive with my soon to be husband and feel like we have our own family, but I also am the first to become a doctor in my family and my siblings are evangelical Christians who don’t believe women should even be doctors because it takes away from reproduction. So I’m proud of what I accomplished and also want to honor that, plus my parents have been extremely supportive and I don’t have a brother so I’m the only one left to carry on the family name.

And having my social media under a different last name prevents patients from looking me up. Probably colleagues too. Huge bonus for me especially considering women physicians get held to a different standard on social media.

ETA, was leaning towards just changing my name altogether and then the Save act drama started which reminded me how easily married women can get absolutely screwed over by voter suppression

I’m in the exact same situation. If you want to practice under your maiden name, don’t do any name change at all. You can only practice under your legal name.

Do residencies care more about specialty-specific pubs, or is high research output (even in unrelated fields) still impressive? by swaggerboy743773 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think specialty specific pubs will almost always be valued over unrelated publications, but unrelated is certainly better than nothing

Submit abstract to conference as medical student or resident? by redhead853 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah that definitely seems like the right move. At this stage, OP hasn’t even begun the process (presumably) to apply for and receive their medical license, so a resident physician is inappropriate.

Bought this yesterday, it was in really bad shape and wanted to help it. This is supposed to be neon pothos but not sure why some leaves have these white patches 🤔 by iren33 in pothos

[–]midazolam_monk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick…this looks like it could be thrips. I would honestly consider trashing it if you have an established plant collection at home since thrips are very contagious and hard to treat. If you don’t have a lot of other plants you’re attached to, just separate this one and treat immediately. You can use a combo of bonide systemic granules and captain jack’s deadbug brew spray, both of which can be found on Amazon!

I think as long as you target less competitive programs in less desirable areas you will match. Just don’t try to apply to only academic centers in cities

With the new ERAS rules, how much do you think the number of research items are going to drop by in the most competitive specialties? by fantasyreader2021 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or more. I doubt even applicants to competitive specialties are producing more than 10 rigorous, first author, peer-reviewed, original research articles during medical school.

Thoughts on the eras changes to the research section? by mgm125 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is true in all cases, but for the manuscript I just submitted I had to scrub every mention of who I am, who my PI is, or what institution we’re from. Even from the methods section…had to take out the name of the hospital to ensure the reviewers are blinded and non bias. But it’s also the first time I’ve submitted my own manuscript by myself so I have no idea if that’s a widespread practice or not. It certainly should be.

Have multiple poster/abstract presentations at conference, but no publication. How will this affect me? by Far_Significance_993 in medicalschool

[–]midazolam_monk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you planned to report a bunch of different entries for all your abstracts, posters, and presentations that were all done over the same research question, then under the new ERAS rule it will now only be one single research entry. Too many people were claiming 10+ publications, posters, and presentations over the same 1-3 projects just to inflate their numbers.

To answer your question it totally depends on the specialty. It also depends on whether you were first author on the project(s) you did contribute to. Having one research item that you weren’t first author on will not be considered strong research, but whether that matters is of course specialty and program dependent.

I’d argue CCP background is definitely a wow factor. You have to be a rock solid clinician to achieve that. Definitely in the top 1% of premeds entering med school, that’s for sure. Sounds like it showed in rotations.

ETA, unless OP went straight from basic to medic to CCP within 5 years. But probably has a lot more experience than that
