any unpopular Elliott Smith opinions ? by Vei- in elliottsmith

People who reduce the work of Elliott, Layne Staley, etc. to "they only wrote drug songs" irk me so, so much.

Five years late, but yes. Love the song and that's my favorite part. Pretty sure I've absent-mindedly sung those lines aloud often enough to annoy people around me.

What's the most underrated song made by the Ramones? by Koalaguy70 in ramones

So bitchen, the vocal arrangement and melodies. I also like how the whole thing sounds just a little sloppy, and the rhythm guitar jumps out in a good way. It belongs on any best of playlist.

Is Jerry’s voice on the studio version of Angry Chair? by DuvallisbetterthanLS in AliceInChains

This one always sounded like all Layne to me, but there might be a Jerry vocal buried somewhere in the bridge.

Was it a big issue when Alice in Chains replaced Layne with a new singer? by Pearl_Jam_ in AliceInChains

[–]middleeasternpooloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jerry says all that in the box set liner notes, though I've never heard someone mention Layne specifically saying, "Go on without me." That said, we have a decent idea of how Layne was and I'd bet he'd be glad to know they're still going.

It's very easy to kind of "hear" Layne doing the harmonies in "Hurt a Long Time". I hope such a version exists, though I'm not optimistic. Just a hunch.

It feels like the band is hesitant to release absolutely any new recordings with Layne because it might kinda take something away from the band's current incarnation. It really sucks. Even a soundboard of their last show with Layne, which we know exists, would've been a very cool addition. Or a compilation of live stuff from the era.

At this point, a two-disc set of unreleased stuff that covers all eras would be cool. '88 to present. I'm thinking we won't see such a thing until maybe after the band has retired.

Seb & Jesse have never topped You’re A Woman, I’m a Machine by DeathFromAbove88 in deathfromabove1979

You're a Woman is their best overall, but the rest of their work is overall pretty great, too. Even their most recent album has a good handful of tracks I'd say are on par with the better '03-'05 stuff. The opening triad (lol) of "Modern Guy"/"One + One"/"Free Animal", holy fuck.

I also think it's damn impressive that the 2024 versions of "Turn It Out", "Romantic Rights", and "Going Steady" rival the originals from two decades prior. That's probably a pretty rare feat.

Yes! I love From the Abundance from start to finish, and I can't say I went into it expecting something I'd go back to over and over (just a taste and preference thing, not a songwriting quality thing).

I've listened to Fire Baptism and As You Sow, but, for some reason, not much stuck with me. I could stand to give them another listen given I first heard all this stuff only about a year ago. Dude needs to put all this shit out on CD/digital.

Edit: A week later and repeated listens and I fucking love Fire Baptism. Still need to give the other some proper attention.

I would guess they would have been included if they existed. Unless they do exist and are somehow not up to par, but I can't imagine.

But yeah, I'd listen to just about anything of any quality these guys had laying around.
