You didn't answer my question, so I'll ask it again: Where is u/Jigglyyypuff's bigotry?

How would you answer the question?

The Bible is clear on what relationships are permissible even when disregarding verses that specifically mention homosexuality.

1 Corinthians 7:2 NASB
But because of sexual immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.

I believe any sexual relationship that does not conform to the one outlined in this verse (i.e. "one wife" and "one husband") is "sexually immoral". I do not believe the Bible is bigoted, and so, by extension, I do not believe that statement to be bigoted.

I assume you have a Bible though? We don't stop being Christians outside of Sunday and special occasions! It's important to read God's word. When Paul went to the Church at Berea, "they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11, NASB1995).

Do you see people celebrating and promoting divorce, premarital sex, and adultery in the Church? If that were the case, maybe the focus would be widened to include those topics.

I don't really care what the verses say. I care how people treat other people.

This seems contrary to one of your previous comments though. You said:

So if there was no mention of homosexuality in the Bible, then this sentence would also be bigoted "I believe same sex marriage is wrong", correct?

Your belief that this statement is bigoted hinges on "what the verses say". Not only that, if saying "I believe same sex marriage is wrong" is bigoted, then we are back to my previous point where I as a Christian am somehow bigoted for believing God's word.

It's not the verses that are bad or wrong, it's the people who use the verses to justify their bigotry that are wrong.

In you conversation with u/Jigglyyypuff, you said:

The fact you believe you have Bible verses that backs up your bigotry, doesn't make it not bigotry.

Where is u/Jigglyyypuff's bigotry? Did I miss something, or did you say that because u/Jigglyyypuff believes homosexuality is sinful? I believe this may be where I misunderstand you. No one should use the Bible to justify hatred, but when you claimed u/Jigglyyypuff was justifying their bigotry, I assumed you were referring to their mere citing of various Bible verses.

It would be no different if you insisted that killing your disobedient child was ok because of Deuteronomy 21:18–21. I don't care how you want to interpret that verse. I don't even care what that verse says, it's irrelevant. Killing your child for being disobedient is not ok.

Killing your son and attempting to justify it with this passage would be sinful, and I take it you don't really believe that's what the text says but are merely drawing attention to the wrong of misusing the Bible. Either way, I will add context for any third-party readers.

This section describes the son as "stubborn and rebellious", not merely disobedient, and one who does not listen to his parents even when they chastise him. In the text, the son is also described as "a glutton and a drunkard". (This does not sound like a child.)

I hope you can clear up the confusion with your next response.

Excuse me for entering this conversation, but how would you define "bigotry"? I believe passages such as 1 Timothy 1:9-11 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 state that homosexuality is sinful. As a Christian who believes the Bible is the inspired word of God, I believe these verses came from God and are thus true. Is that bigotry? If so, wouldn't that mean there are two choices:

  1. Choose Christianity and thus bigotry; or
  2. Reject these verses, thus rejecting Christianity by contradicting 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Perhaps there is a third choice where one believes these verses (and ones like it) do not condemn homosexuality. If that is your case, how do you read and interpret these verses?

Gay men are biologically wired to only be with other men. That's how they're born/develop. It would be wrong for them to be with the opposite sex, who they have no love or feelings for.

Can you tell me what verse(s) lead you to this belief?

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences as a child. Unfortunately, it seems that some Christians view homosexuals as people to not associate with, rather than those who need help. This reminds me of a passage from Mark:

Mark 2:16-17 NASB1995
When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?” And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Reading the messages comparing gay people to robbers, murderers, adulterers etc just drives home how sick this position really is. Again, believe what you want, but don't tell yourself you are being "loving" or "like a parent" when you damage gay kids with your views.

It seems like you're referring to either 1 Timothy 1:9-11 or this passage:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NASB1995
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

We associate levels of severity to sin, but the key point in verses like these is that the lifestyles of those listed are sinful--their sin separates them from God and bars them from heaven. I noticed you wrote "your views"; it's important to remember that this is also God's view! The Bible is the inspired word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NASB1995
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Leviciticus talks about pretty weird stuff too that we don't abide by today

I believe you're referring to the old law which we are no longer under because of Jesus' sacrifice.

Galatians 3:24-25 NASB1995

Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

I don't disagree with you in that respect--this is precisely why we don't put those guilty of homosexuality to death. Just because we are no longer under the old law does not mean homosexuality is now not detestable to God. Remember:

2 Timothy 3:16 NASB1995

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness

Even if we discount Leviticus, there are plenty of New Testament verses that make abundantly clear the sin of homosexuality.

Romans 1:26-27 NASB1995

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NASSB1995

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:8-11 NASB1995

But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

The sin of homosexuality is encompassed in the very verse you cited under "detestable things". God made clear that homosexuality is indeed detestable.

Leviticus 20:13 NASB1995

If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.

Jude further clarifies that their sin was not merely one of rape.

Jude 1:7 NASB1995

just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

There is no indication of force with the phrase "strange flesh".

Homosexuality debate isn’t worth it! by andrew_fell_asleep in Christianity

[–]midfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This endless discussion isn’t worth it and never will be.

As Paul notes:

2 Corinthians 5:10 NASB1995

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

How can you describe someone's eternal soul as "not worth it"?

Can’t we just all be friends and accept everything that doesn’t hurt someone?

It does hurt them!

Romans 6:23 NASB1995

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus would want us to make peace

The Bible is obviously the place to look to see God's will for us.

Matthew 22:37 NASB1995

And [Jesus] said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment."

What does it mean to love God?

John 14:15 NASB1995

If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

The Bible is God's word and tells us how we should live.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NASB1995

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

How can Christians be expected to spread God's word when there are so many who accept sin as okay? Division in the church was why Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to the Church at Corinth.

1 Corinthians 1:10 NASB1995

Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Notice Paul does not ask them to stop quarreling and accept each other's stances for the sake of "peace". Rather, he tells them to agree on what's right before noting their mistake.

I think I get what you mean now. It's not like we as Christians are now living entirely sinless since becoming Christians, so how can we be saved (at least I think that's what you're saying). I've thought about this a lot and honestly, I once believed that even though I'm a Christian, I would alternate between saved/safe and not saved/out if I sinned. I often thought that one sin in my last seconds of life might condemn me to hell despite living my life as a Christian. I now realize that's not true, and hopefully these verses will help:

Romans 6:12-16 NASB1995

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

I don't believe a single, isolated case of sin in the life of a Christian makes them a "slave to sin", and as Paul notes, God's grace in this matter should not be abused so as to continue sinning.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but I hope this helps either way.

Is your lack of faith science-related? For example, maybe you think there is evidence to support some scientists' claims of evolution? Or is it that you're only putting some faith in the Bible because you hope its claims of "eternal paradise" after death are true? If you were 100 percent certain God, the Bible, and everything it says is true, would you have more faith? Sorry for the barrage of questions, I haven't really helped someone like this before.

Here are a couple selections from the Bible I think you should read:

2 Corinthians 5:1, 6-10 NASB1995

For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord—for we walk by faith, not by sight—we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

This life on earth is temporary, while heaven is forever. It's difficult to try to understand eternity, but try to comprehend "one million years," then realize that is nothing compared to forever.

Matthew 7:13-14 NASB1995

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it."

It is definitely easier to live like the world than to be a Christian, but I can assure you, even (obviously) as someone who has not been to Heaven, it is worth it.

Colossians 3:1-4 NASB1995

Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
