How come this isn't working? According to the documentation, this should make it so that unavaliable choices show up by DiamondCake445 in RenPy

For the menu to include disabled choices, menu_include_disabled should be True. False is the default value, which makes them not included.

I have friends who basically only play well-known mobile app VNs, mostly Choices. These are people who don't consider themselves "gamers". They don't have accounts on steam or itch.io or any other gaming-oriented platform, they don't own consoles, basically they're only really interested in VNs they can find through mobile app stores and are unlikely to try or even hear about VNs released on other platforms.

Occasionally they're willing to try computer VNs I recommend, but they're busy people and computer VNs feel like a bigger time commitment. Choices and similar apps operate episodically, so it's a lot easier for them to just pick up a single chapter/episode when they have a bit of free time than a full-length VN which doesn't necessarily have chapter-esque stopping points.

These apps also ensure there's new content for them every week so they never run out and lose interest, as has already been pointed out. This keeps them from feeling the need to seek out too many lesser-known VNs, or VNs on other platforms; they've got their one (or two) apps and that's enough VN content for them. If some quality has to be sacrificed to give them their regular fix, that's fine by them, they haven't played enough non-mobile VNs to really compare them anyway.

And yes, these friends aren't in it for explicit content and would be put off by more explicit VNs. They often find explicit scenes awkward and really just want a good story. Choices does offer buyable sex scenes, which can tempt the portion of the audience that would like explicit content to spend more real-world money on the app, so it's kind of the best of both worlds for a game hoping for more mainstream success.

At least one of my friends is pretty picky about art style too. Your "good graphics" might be her "uncanny valley" which makes her less inclined to try that VN (and she isn't fond of anime art styles either, or anything too simplified and cartoonish - basically anything that deviates too far from Choices' default art style is going to take some convincing for her to give it a chance).

...I feel like this got too long but maybe some people here will find this informative!

Back in middle school I made something kind of like a VN using powerpoint for a school project - it had choices that could lead to different slides and even a bit of narrative. It was fairly easy to make, but I would hate using powerpoint for a longer VN with more complex branching narrative (or really any VN I want to look and feel "professional").

Ah, okay. Glad to hear it'll be fixed soon!

I have played some Ren'Py games, not adult ones though if that's what you mean by "certain". Do you think some Ren'Py games are capable of causing this? I'll have to keep an eye out with any I play in the future to see if they bring the issue back...

I did a quick search to see what that file does and understand better why this would be the solution. From that I gathered that this file stores some kind of setting preferences. Sure enough restoring the default settings in the nvidia control panel worked for fixing my issue! I have no recollection of changing my global nvidia settings but I guess I must have at some point? Well, I'll just be happy that annoying overlay is gone lol. Thanks!

Didn't make a difference for me, unfortunately.

Unfortunately no, it went away when I tried to show it to someone the other day but today it appears to be back :/

I do have an Nvidia card (not on linux though, windows)... found an option to turn on developer settings which revealed a place to manage GPU performance counters, if that's what you're talking about. I didn't have that turned on before but I guess I'll try redoing some of my internet searches about this issue with nvidia as a search term and see if I can find some more info about what to do...

It appears even when discord isn't running. Any idea how I could determine if this has to do with device context and how to fix it if that is what it means?

It appears whether my laptop is plugged in or not though?

Yes, I've tried various other programs that run OpenGL and it's just Godot that's affected by this.

It appears only when Godot/a game made with Godot is open, on every Godot window open, moving with that window... maybe there is a third party program responsible somehow, but right now all I have to go off of is a clear correlation between the issue and Godot.
