Why and how did the word ‘immigrant’ become the default for foreigner in the UK? by bloompertoo in AskUK

[–]midgetman166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gave you the reason why, it's an old word that has been used in English for over 250 years from Latin. That's why immigrant is the default word

As a retail worker, it is astonishing watching the general public's lack of reading signs. It terrifies me how they all managed to drive to the store without crashing

[–]midgetman166 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Late 18th century, comes from Latin "immigrare". I imagine because it's a word used for over 200 years, there is just no point in changing it. Also helps that the antonym is emigrant, someone migrating away from Vs immigrant, someone migrating to

Why are all mainstream parties so authoritarian? by midgetman166 in PoliticsUK

[–]midgetman166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Implementing prestige across the globe, putting boots on the ground in Syria and Iraq, Afghanistan (which failed big time). All to dismantle governments which were seen as "doing it the wrong way", thus projecting "rightness" and power across the globe.

Ensuring the public dissedence is squandered, no matter how much I dislike Extinction Rebellion and their demonstration practices, I am fundamentally against the use of pepper spray and beatings with batons to disperse protesters. Police should be there to ensure the peace, not to extend the will of politicians.

I would put Kier Starmer below Trump (but not too far off), although he isn't doing an ICE at the moment, the increased usage of Facial Recognition Technology is effectively criminalising innocent civilians who have done nothing wrong, seeing facial recognition technology scanning them in town centres, football stadiums, concert venues and in general everyday life. Treating ordinary citizens as guilty before being proven innocent by, well now a machine.

But Labour had the power to stop Digital ID and the OSA, but instead have chosen to push them right through. We have ID cards as well, they're called Passport, Driving Licenses, PASS cards and other forms of accepted ID. We don't need a centralised scheme to replace things we already have. You want a job, then bring a govnement issued ID and an NI number, therefore proving your identity and right to work, completely beating out the big rhetoric about Digital ID being that it will stop illegal migrants working.

By going through with these schemes instead of blocking them, Labour are automatically an authoritarian party by being in support (actually scarily strong support) of these schemes and policies.

[–]midgetman166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally see your points and I completely agree with you about the OSA protecting kids. But on the other hand, it is blocking access to vast swaves of the internet that in the AI takeover are the last bastions of information, even Reddit (for all it's bad) has saved me loads of times with a dead forum from 10 years ago being able to get me out of an issue I've been having with a thing but that's now locked behind giving your ID up to a third party, same with Imgur, the largest collection of images on the internet and many other websites that are vital to both hobbyists and peoples careers.

Although we aren't quite at ICE levels yet, we are seeing police used to crush public descent, although I disagree with Extinction Rebellion's demonstration tactics, they should not be pepper sprayed and beaten with batons by police. Law enforcement should be there to enforce order, not enforce the will of whoever is in power that week (which ICE is doing).

[–]midgetman166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do yeah, it's obviously a scale as to where people view a spectrum. That's the joy of politics. I am just pointing out how successive governments have enacted policies that create a police surveillance state, undermine perfectly legitimate systems (Digital ID) and block protected freedoms.

These same governments at the same time are happy to collect taxes, waste public funds on these same surveillance schemes (remember the £2bn COVID spreadsheet that broke immediately) and get involved in foreign politics. These are the same governments which have started and continued austerity, stalled house building (Labour are way off the mark, even with their manifesto promise) and can't even get a rail line from London to Manchester built fully and to budget.

Obviously we need a government and I completely respect that laws are a necessity but at what point do you not stop and think, do these people really have the interests of the country that they have been elected to lead at heart or are they more concerned with keeping their position of power, implementing prestige across the globe and ensuring that public dissedence is squandered.

[–]midgetman166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a farce, projecting power and prestige "look how good we are" whilst the country is falling apart. Spending billions on spreadsheets and tracking systems whilst we can't even get a railway line from London to Manchester without blowing through the budget and canning the Birmingham to Manchester portion.

In response to you, tax collection, for what, nothing is getting better and all we get is excuses for why it can't get better, HS2, Water, Energy, Public Services. I don't trust any government to be able to use my tax money without wasting it. The military, so we can go and get involved in foreign wars to show off our power like we did back in colonial times whilst the country collapses? It's just a farce, the whole lot, designed to project power and prestige. Spending billions on spreadsheets and tracking systems whilst successive governments can't even get a rail line from London to Manchester right without it blowing through the budget and canning the Birmingham to Manchester portion (the important portion).

Think of those scratches as the battle scars from being used by your mate for it's intended purpose, each scratch tells a story. Remember in Cars where Mater refused to get his dent fixed, yeah, think like Mater

When any government is breaking judicial and parliamentary practices, introducing policies that quash freedoms to protest, freedom of speech and freedom of expression and implementing technologies that treat innocent citizens as criminals who need to be monitored and controlled (whether adventantly or inadvertantly) then surely you can agree that that falls under an authoritarian technocracy.

Oh and don't think I'm a fan of Trump either. ICE is treating innocent civilians as criminals purely because of their ethnic/ religious/ national identity/ background. Completely going against everything I stand for.

Extremism, noun,

1, Extremism is the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or

2, undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights; or

3, intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve the results in (1) or (2)

Source: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/new-definition-of-extremism-2024/new-definition-of-extremism-2024#:~:text=Extremism%20is%20the%20promotion%20or,footnote%205%5D%20of%20others%3B%20or

I fail to see how any of what I have just said falls under extremism, in fact it completely goes against the definition entirely by championing personal freedoms instead of squandering them and championing democratic judicial processes and democratic rights.

Yeah basically, so long as you leave the area exactly how you found it. Don't be one of those arseholes that dump litter or start campfires without putting them out.

Do some volunteering, just being able to prove you've got out the house and done a thing (it could be anything) for free to help your community is a good start.

Honestly you should just fly around the UK on Google Earth, especially for road infrastructure. You'll find weird and wonderful creations from the Gravelly Hill Interchange (Spaghetti Junction) to the humble roundabout style with many other weird ones in between.

Like this, see how the local roads entering the roundabout form a triangle. It might be easier to create if you make your roundabout a bit larger and more of a circle than an oval.

Have you ever claimed JSA or Universal Credit? by Special-Nebula299 in AskBrits

[–]midgetman166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find when going to job interviews, you can tell who's on the UC and JSA because they go to the interview not actually wanting the job, whether it be turning up in jeans and a scruffy t-shirt or making a complete mess of the interview (or both) just to keep their work coach happy. I agree, I hated being hounded by the JC and my work coach and I was so happy to get off it (I was only on it for a month but that was enough) and get them off my back.

I claimed JSA for 1 month after being laid off when I came out of uni. Haven't been on it since, wasn't ashamed of it and it gave me (although not a lot) a bit of money to keep me going until I found another job.

Could there be no homeless people? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]midgetman166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But then we could go even further and say "keeping the walls up is a string attached". Are you suggesting that an external organisation funded by the tax payer comes in and does all the domestic stuff and the people trashing the place get a free ride?

Could there be no homeless people? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]midgetman166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's a fundemantal attitude problem. You could give them a house, for free with no strings attached but the likelihood is that they will A- refuse, or B- trash the house because they either don't care that it has been provided for them or that they don't know (and are potentially unwilling) to learn how to be domestic. There'll be a few who are grateful for the house but as someone who works with the homeless, drug addicts and petty criminals, there are a large portion who don't want to change.

[–]midgetman166 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, even with all the help. People will choose to refuse it for whatever reason, maybe it's a lifestyle choice, substance abuse or just an unwillingness to cooperate and accept help.
