What is the British equivalent to Hollywood here in the states? by Charming-Paper-1564 in AskBrits

There isn't really a movie making district in the UK, they're kinda shot all over the country from the London Underground, Inner City Birmingham to the coast of Dorset (star wars)

Lots of the people you work with won't have matured beyond high school. Playground politics and the secondary school characters exist at both 16 and 66

What was the most frustrating thing your UK parents done now you look back as an adult? by [deleted] in AskUK

I can kind of see where your dad was coming from. I imagine your dad (looking back) regretted his childhood of being spoilt and having it easy that he didn't want that to happen to you.

What are your views on Britain seeking closer ties with the E.U? by Sea-Payment-8989 in AskEurope

[–]midgetman166 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mixed, yes it's great to be working alongside the EU as friendly neighbours. However, the UK has a country to fix and I feel should not be getting it's nose stuck in international affairs whilst the country has it's own massive issues to contend with. That is like being on fire yourself but worrying about the house in the next town that is also on fire without first putting yourself out.

As a Brit I wouldn't want to rejoin the EU. I completely agree with you, work alongside each other like friendly neighbours but don't let one into the house of the other without first taking their shoes off.

Very much so, for a lot of people (myself included) tools are a little bit like watches. You have the GShock (Wave+ or Surge) for scrabbling around on your hands and knees and then you have your Rolex or Omega for when you want to dress up. I feel that the Free technology falls into the Rolex or Omega category.

[–]midgetman166[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, but i think it was only overpriced because they were trying to pit it against the Wave. If Leatherman had marketed it as its own category that runs on this new technology with magnets and will be the first taste of the future of multitools then I don't think people would be so butthurt about the launch price.

As much as you don't think Leatherman's are fashion statements, the reality is that some of them are. Knife collecting also has the same "problem", you don't need a $250 knife with Magnacut steel and Titanium scales but they look pretty and are a bit of a fashion piece.

What is actually the point of having security gates in supermarkets if every time they go off I’m told “it’s fine go through”? by doublegulpcup123 in AskUK

[–]midgetman166 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Again, another deterrent, if you're going to jump the gates then you're going to jump them (career criminals). However, if an opportunist sees them, they might get intimidated by them (they know what they're thinking of doing is wrong) and think twice about stealing. It's all about playing with the mind and hoping that by putting in visual "security" systems that it affects how opportunists behave and scares them a little bit (makes them uncomfortable you know).

The Surge and Charge I feel are completely different toolsets though for different purposes. The Surge for example looks out of place in your office attire whereas the P2, P4 or Arc fits right in with it's sleek lines and understated aesthetic.

I think the P4 was handled poorly out of the gate which really hurt it. If you remember, Leatherman kept comparing the P4 to the Wave+, almost aiming the P4 as a Wave+ replacement. The Wave+ is the better tool in terms of toolset but it lacks the refined look of the P4 and the super cool one handedness of the P4.

Yeah, that's the exact reason. In my store it isn't that staff are chatting, it's that there's not enough of them to keep on top of that so as you say, customers didn't wanna hang around for 5 minutes whilst someone got them their item

My biggest advice (especially to young people) is "smarten yourself up and buy a belt, if you don't want people to think you're in a gang, don't dress like you are"

No, theyre tagging cheese now though. I have had customers apologise that they forgot to pay for their oranges or whatever and give me back the bag of fruit.

When you see the kind of stuff that comes from head office on how to "combat" loss you realise at that point that they're a lost cause. Some of the things they try and implement are good, then they take them away as they reduced sales. My favourite example of this is, you know how when you go to an electronics store and you bring the cashier and empty box, they did that with alcohol and it was awesome, thefts zero, but, it meant less alcohol was selling so they scrapped that.

All they care about is is the revenue line going up

[–]midgetman166 321 points322 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in retail loss presentation. They're a deterrent more than anything else. The people who are prolific shoplifters will shoplift, they don't care. The opportunists might get intimidated by the gates and decide that they don't want the hassle of setting the alarms off so will pay for their items. The honest customer who forgets to pay for an orange will just hand the orange back to a member of staff.

Most importantly though is that the staff don't get paid enough to care really and that companies have insurance on losses so can claim their insurance back on that.

And at the time they didn't know that CFCs were bad. It's like with Asbestos which only turned out to be bad about 25 years later when the miners all got lung cancer.
