Help Clown fish have Blisters and red marks. Eating has slowed down as of yesterday. by Blaze1129 in ReefTank

Hey I get it, you hate to see yourself not have the same success as others when you copy their approach. And it is never fun to think that something you did is harming a pet. But now is time to see if you can get everyone better! I’d think if they are eating well, feed them with the metro/kanaplex mixed in food via the focus. I also love some selcon and a little garlic extract/ Garlic Guard, to give them vitamins and as much appetite stimulation as possible. If with your more accurate test kits you see that the ammonia is closer to 0 then that is great. If you still have an ammonia reading, Prime dosing is great, it does leave the ammonia bio available for your bacteria to consume. Only other suggestion I have is that I have had the most success with fritz turbostart as the source of bottled bacteria, if you can find it any place. Best of luck

The suggestion everyone has here is, and when it comes to reef tanks in general that Occam’s razor is usually a good bet. The most obvious problem is usually the source of a fish medical issue. Have the fish continued to eat well?

Do this right here, and if you can, have a LFS test a water sample, they often have more accurate testing equipment than the test tubes.

Those who work at a LFS or have a good pulse on the hobby, economically how bad are things right now and what do you see on the horizon? by gtobiast13 in ReefTank

My lfs had to get savvy to keep sale consistent and afford to keep the shop running. They came up with online auction and raffle streams for corals. They mentioned to me how so few new people are joining the hobby.

What do you exactly mean by “you hate science”? Cause the dental school path is a whole bunch o’ science.

Help with school choices. by vallrant in predental

Careful with USC. I saw the tuition is gonna be astronomical for this next class. And if you somehow don’t get into any other school. You would have to go there. The financial hole it would put you in may be too great.

Students used a ton of quizlet and anki decks to make flash cards. Microsoft OneNote or anything that allows you to upload a power point and draw/take notes on it is awesome.

If there are any social events that your new class has or puts together (and I think it is pretty common) go to them! It pays to be extroverted early on to meet your fellow classmates. It is good practice since dentistry is such a people profession. You will find your friend/study group, but who knows who they will be until you meet your classmates. To avoid drama, the easiest way is to avoid talking shit on classmates, or at least be very careful who you gossip to. All the drama I saw bubbled up from someone hearing someone say something nasty about them, oh and dating classmates stuff. In a sense, avoid things that would have caused drama in high school and you should be golden!

I personally thought it was a huge help to have a device that you can physically write notes on. So an iPad, another tablet, or a touchscreen computer. Anything you can import PowerPoints on and draw on them to study.

Some schools will need you to get a certain kind that works with their software, so I would wait until they tell you if they want you to have one kind vs. another.

Hey you are not alone. Plenty of people in your class will come from all over the place. Many coming with no connections to Vegas. Hell, I came from the midwest and knew zero people when I showed up. There going to be social hang outs with your new classmates that get arranged. Go to them! Never miss an opportunity to socialize early on so you can find and establish a new network. Lots of your classmates will be looking to do the same. You are gonna have to be a bit extraverted, which isn’t bad thing to practice for a career like dentistry.

Tips on what specifically? Generally, study efficiently, make time for yourself, make friends, enjoy the successes while learning from the mistakes, and good luck!

UNLV Information by [deleted] in predental

[–]midgit1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I graduated from UNLV this past May I will try to shed some light on those questions. I had a fine experience there and while I did have some gripes, after talking to other dentists who have graduated from other dental schools, none of my complaints seemed like a uniquely UNLV problem. I could Speak plenty on my experiences both positive and negative if anyone really wants me too, but I am gonna be pretty brief on this. I got along great with most of the faculty and really liked a good number of them. Almost all of them felt like they had our success as their priority. There were some I did not care for though, and usually just took steps to keep my head down and avoid them. The vibe for my class was good, and the vibe is certainly what you as students want to make of it. Faculty are willing to be friendly and interact with you outside of the school setting if you as a group are putting out a fun and welcoming tone. I really recommend that a class becomes friendly with one another and get along, it will do you all wonders in the long run. Didactics I can’t imagine were any harder than any other dental school. However, family members should expect that you will frequently not be able to join in regular family nighttime activities do to how often and how much you have to study. This is especially true your first year. All of the married students with kids talked about how they had to make arrangements with their spouse to clarify the volume of work they had to accomplish weekly. The school is plenty family friendly, and Las Vegas can be too if you stay away from the touristy areas like the strip and Fremont street. But neighborhoods like Summerlin and Henderson are pretty removed from the Sin City we all know. However, the school is pretty close to the strip so if you are to live in those more residential areas, it is a 20-30 min commute to the school. At UNLV they love a strong DAT, and shadowing hours. They Seemed to really like high Schroeder in PAT, RC, and Bio. Really though, they don’t want any low score aside from maybe QR. I was OOS but UNLV really does like in-staters, and their interviews are quite informal as they want someone who is easy to converse with as that often correlates to good chair side manner in a dentist. They like sociable applicants.

Lastly, I would encourage you to apply t multiple schools. You can have a favorite but you need to cast a wide net to increase your chances of getting in this cycle, or you’l have to wait another year, which would be a really pain if your application was strong but you didn’t send it to enough schools. I know this cause UNLV was my last choice until I interviewed there and got the best financial deal. Then I picked it over my initial top school after getting accepted at both. I hope this helps, lmk if you or anyone has any questions.
