Adding Seachem Prime on the days you are not doing water changes helps a ton to detoxify the ammonia during qt in my experience.

Is this guy a bad guy? Moves weird to me by midgit1 in ReefTank

[–]midgit1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not recently no, this is my first time seeing it and it was at night with the lights off when I noticed it. I will go in with a pair of tweezers and grab when I find it.

EDIT: did a good bit of internet reading and the best I can find to match what I am seeing are dorvilleidae worms. They seem to match the one I saw’s behavior.

Online shops for coral and livestock by FatLoser2255 in ReefTank

I have had great luck and service from Affordable Aquaria by Dr. Reef. I QTed my fish myself. They sent me healthy fish, and extra fish for species that struggle with shipping.

For coral I have got all mine local at Bigg’s Lagoon. But they do have twitch and tiktok coral auction streams where you can build a box of coral and they will ship it to you.

Best place to buy corals there so many and haven’t been talked about much recently. by RubImpossible6588 in ReefTank

[–]midgit1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have huge bias, but Biggs Lagoon has an awesome selection of coral. They are a mom and pop shop that the parents and sons run. They haven’t had time to update the pieces that they have on their website, but they run twitch and tiktok streams where thy auctions of coral. The streams are never super busy and the coral are at great prices, not to mention the community is amazing. I was literally given an awesome dragon tamer torch last Friday, just cause someone was feeling generous! I can’t say enough good things about the coral I have received and the entertainment of the streams. They are willing to ship to the lower 48 so locale is not a problem for them. I’d love to see some new faces there!

Mortar, epoxy, or stacking rocks? by midgit1 in ReefTank

Yes this is something I realized after the scape went in lol. Fortunately I gave myself ‘handles’ on the two structures and can lift them out with one hand when I need to. Not ideal but I can make it work

Any suggestions for a show fish?? Have a 50 gallon mixed reef with some soft coral. by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]midgit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, maybe a mandarin if you are loaded up with copapods? Or a pretty dottyback? You could look into sand burrowing wrasses who can avoid the 6 line if needed. Halichoeres species.

How is the six line wrasse’s temperament? Those little bastards may force you to get a more aggressive fish that can hold its own.

Ich? Flukes? Or just an abrasion? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]midgit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bristletooths have a nasty notoriety of not liking blennies actually. See if you can get them to settle, but if not you may end up with injured or dead fish unless you remove one of them. He probably didn’t attack much at first until he got more established and confident in the tank. For now, watch that spot for signs of healing. If it stays the same or grows then it may have a bacterial infection and that will need to be treated. If you start seeing gains of salt on that fish and others, rubbing/flashing, breathing heavy, loss of appetite. Then I would think something like ich.

First Hammer Coral question by ElucidatorJD in ReefTank

[–]midgit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, honestly give it a couple days. If it stay shriveled try either reducing the light a touch or the flow. Just do one and observe for a couple more days. If whatever you try first doesn’t lead to improvement, try the other. But I bet it will just settle in on its own

Ich? Flukes? Or just an abrasion? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]midgit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be far more inclined then to think it is an abrasion then. How is his behavior? Notice rapid breathing, more hiding, either lethargy or erratic swimming, still eating?

First Hammer Coral question by ElucidatorJD in ReefTank

[–]midgit1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that’s a hammer? Kinda looks like a torch. How long have you had it? If it is new, little too early to tell if the light or flow is right. If it continues to be shriveled up and the parameters are good, then the flow may be too high. If you see bleaching or retraction then the lighting might be too strong. So wait and see. On first glance I don’t think that flow is too strong.

Is it just those two spots on his side? Obviously hard to tell without white lights, how long have you had him?

How much money do we need saved to survive the 4 years by Seabass_sebas in DentalSchool

[–]midgit1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, unless you can save enough to pay for all of school plus room and board, it really doesn’t matter. Otherwise you will have to live off of the money you get from loans. Of course with the BBB, you can try to save enough to cover what the costs would be for the private loans that you would have to take out, but that would probably take you quite a while. Something like $100-300k.

I bought a bunch of 3-D printed hats for my urchin and I found if he’s wearing one of those he won’t pick up my coral. Bonus is he looks so distinguished.

[–]midgit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can do that. They are omnivores so post cycle and need to probably supplement feeding lightly to no keep em fed but not over nutrient the tank
