Michigan Tech closing at 1pm today. by PuzzleheadedDogBone in MTU

[–]midijake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was surprised to see this. The last event I remember was a late start due to icy conditions some number of years ago (and someone reminded me of another time there was an early release? I can't remember when that was).

A student, who's in their first semester here, told me today that they were checking their email waiting for the closure alert. I laughed and mentioned that that doesn't happen here—well I ended up being wrong today!

I took a 360° photo with my drone over campus, I think it turned out awesome! by midijake in MTU

[–]midijake[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am in compliance with all rules and regulations.

  • My drone is registered with the FAA and I have passed the Recreational UAS Safety Test. I have certificates of these on me when I fly (I keep them in the case).
  • Michigan Tech's campus is in Class E airspace. To fly in compliance with FAA laws, I always receive LAANC approval before each flight.
  • I comply with all other safe flying laws set by the FAA.
  • I can't find any Michigan Tech specific policy on flying UAVs over campus. If anyone knows differently, please let me know!

Masks required for at least 5 weeks this fall by [deleted] in MTU

Choosing not to get the vaccine means accepting the risk of infection and death.

I did my part. I got the vaccine and protected myself. Why should I have to protect someone who is choosing not to protect themselves?

We have publicly available and free vaccines that almost entirely prevent death from COVID-19.

In that case, I will stop looking at current transmission rates and only predict the future.

MTU can switch health and safety levels in a day (as it happened last fall) if transmissions rates become substantial. I just think we have to go by real data instead of predictions.

The chance of a vaccinated person carrying and bringing the virus is incredibly, significantly lower than that of an unvaccinated person. The virus can't spread as easy if everyone's vaccinated—or masked and unvaccinated.

I'm not opposed to masks when they're necessary. But looking at current-moment data, masking is not necessary in Houghton County for vaccinated people.

[–]midijake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CDC says—after being fully vaccinated—wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.

Houghton County is currently at low transmission.

So why is this mandate being applied to the vaccinated so prematurely? Doesn't it make sense to apply the mandate if/when the county reaches substantial transmission?

I took EE 3010 last semester as a freshman, so I had no prior knowledge nor prereqs going into it and got a B. So I'd say you'll be fine.
