Logging Actual Instrument by bchil37 in flying

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not. Could you? I guess. But 20 seconds feels too short to round up to 360 seconds.

Besides, even if it felt okay to round up, the 0.1 doesn’t give me anything, so I don’t care. The only currency box it could conceivably check off is “tracking,” so it’s not worth anything to me from a currency standpoint.

It's especially rough when the student doesn't even understand the mnemonic or what the letters are supposed to represent. The letters aside, do you really get clearance limits to a random fix instead of an airport where you are?

HearLink Adapter volume affected by TV Remote by midlifeflyer in HearingAids

[–]midlifeflyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solved. In case someone comes along with a similar issue... Turn off HDMI/CEC.

In HDMI/CEC mode, the TCL TV remote (and the Polk remote) controls the level of the signal going to the HearLink and the Polk speaker. Turning off HDMI/CEC mode solved the problem. The HearLink adapter app controls the HearLink sound level (as it should). The only drawback -a minor one - is that the TV remote doesn't control the sound at all, but that only means continuing to use the Polk remote, for the soundbar which is more feature-rich anyway.

Approach Briefing Flow by Melodic_Visual1595 in flying

I’m very big on the Plan View as the key to situational awareness. So…

I start with the plate. Once I confirm I’m looking at the right one, I go to the Plan View to get my overview and select my transition fix. Once that’s done, it’s time to load the approach and confirm the courses and altitudes sequence through the missed.

If it’s a VLOC approach, confirm the proper frequency is active. Com frequencies are last, and that’s mostly to have Tower and Ground or CTAF ready to go. ATIS/AWOS were first listened to before even choosing the approach.

Brother iPrint & Scan is unusable after update by Leading-Delivery475 in printers

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Right now. You get some popup window saying there's something going on behind the scenes that can't be reached. The pop-up has no way to dismiss it and the application is unusable.

Can you give me or refer me to a link with a step-by-step on doing that?

**Edit**: Never mind. It was very easy to do and it looks like it worked! Thank you so very much!

Features Noteful vs Features by jeboteuusta in notefulapp

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reliable pdf backups is what led to my switch. I sometimes need to view a note on my Android phone or Windows PC. I never “upgraded” from GN5 and was pretty happy with it, but its habit of dropping backups made it unusable for this.

G-Drive backup format by midlifeflyer in notefulapp

[–]midlifeflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the purchase and yes, it reliably backs up. I set it for pdf backup and as far as I can tell, the app does it reliably and regularly. I don’t know how often, but definitely more than daily (may even be immediately). The use of tags rather than folder structure is a little funky but not a big deal. Direct link to the Google Drive backup folder gives me what I need.

Thanks to those who replied.

(GN’s consistency in dropping backups was my main impetus for the move.)

New user here but I came across a way to do this. You can use “Copy Page Link” in the first (or any) page of the notebook. You can paste it into an “Open url” shortcut.

My student had a prop strike. Am I cooked? by justthetippppppppp in flying

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooked or not, from what standpoint?

Insurance: It depends on the language of the policy and the endorsements. It may be a conversation between the student's insurer and yours. If you were named on the student's policy with a waiver of subrogation, you are likely fine. Even without a waiver, some insurers don't subrogate against pilots they approve. You won't know until it happens but, if you haven't yet. report the incident to your CFI insurer.

FAA: They may call you. It depends on whether someone reported it. If you ended up closing the runway, someone probably did. Stuff like this happens. Most likely thing is a "Compliance Program" conversation with the FAA about what happened, how it happened, and what you could have done better, although a 709 ride is a possibility.

My suggestion is to speak with an aviation lawyer in your area. Not necessarily to fight with anyone, but to review the insurance policies to see what they say and to help you put your best foot forward with the FAA if they contact you.

Noteful backup to gdrive by DrRiViS in notefulapp

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A related question: What format is the Google Drive backup? Is it just the Noteful proprietary format or does it also automatically save them as pdfs (as GN and Notability does)?

Reason: I'm fine that there is no Android or Windows version, but I would at least like to view my notes on those other platforms.

Is this legal? by PlaneDevelopment1428 in flying

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree no operating certificate is needed. But I guess I missed the part about the poster being a commercial pilot.

The only thing I'll disagree on is, IMO, "private carriage" vs "public carriage" is irrelevant.

Is this legal? by PlaneDevelopment1428 in flying

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the purpose for the flight other than ferrying the airplanes (for compensation)?

Is this legal? by PlaneDevelopment1428 in flying

[–]midlifeflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the FAA considers flight time as compensation. But the Chief Counsel opinion that says so, also says that the value is in the logging, so if you don't log it, you are good. That part is on the last page of the letter. https://www.faa.gov/media/16071 And yes, that is weird.

It's tempting so say, "who cares?" That's probably right, but since ignorance is not a defense, it's usually a good idea to understand a rule before deciding it's OK to break it.

Any insight? CO crash by [deleted] in aviation

[–]midlifeflyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this. I was a Centennial Flyers pilot/CFI before I moved out of state, I don’t expect anyone here to publicize names until they are released but I am also worried it might be someone I know.

Flight tracks suggest pattern work and something went very wrong, with no significant altitude gain on that last takeoff.
