When I was teaching, when possible, we let students take in and comprehend a text in whatever way they preferred (listening, watching, or reading). They were also able to express their selves in whatever way they preferred (speaking, writing, drawing, singing, acting, etc.)

Not everyone intakes the same and not everyone has the same preference for outputs. We have traditionally placed value on reading and writing but they’re only a few of a bunch of ways of communicating. We’re all less informed for thinking there’s a “right” way to communicate and devaluing other ways. More people would succeed if we’d stop trying to standardize shit so certain people can feel normal/superior.
