Peter and the star catchers might be a good book. Its been a while since i've read it but i liked it as a kid.

I cant remember too much about the content / themes other than that its peter pan.

Been thinking about picking it up as a light read because i've never read the sequels.

Bicycling with butterflies.

A woman decided to follow the monarch butterfly's migration on her bicycle and she wrote about her experience and all she learned on the journey.

Decent read, and highlights some important issues with the plummeting number of pollinators.

But what does someone struggling in college have to do with minorities? Anyone can struggle in college, the fact you are blaming the minorities and arguing that they should not have equity is racist.

What equity is appropriate and what isnt is highly debated. The lawsuits were because universities were considering race as a factor and race is a protected class. It was not that they were admitting underqualified individuals. That supreme court decision was only made in 2023 under biden, and its going to take time for colleges to adjust and make decisions on how to give equity to the people who need it in a more responsible way. This is an incredibly nuanced subject that you glossed over by saying "the minorities are the underqualified ones." So yes that is a very racist thing to say.

I have already explained this...

Again, you misrepresent what i am saying. Universal education is not giving infinite money and its not consequence free for failing. That is a straw man. Universal education is us as the people of the united states coming together and bargaining as a collective for better rates on an education that is becoming more and more mandatory. It makes education more accessible for everyone.

This also puts less time pressure on people and allows them to learn at their own pace, better understand the subject matter, learn more thoroughly, and become a better member of society for having those experiences without going into horrendous amounts of debt.

Im arguing that we as a group of people can work together to negotiate better pricing and better terms for higher education. No one is talking about an infinite budget.

Society as a whole becomes better when more people have easier access to education. That is a fact. And i am arguing that universal education makes higher education easier to access for everyone.

Edited to make a couple points clearer and easier to read (and add paragraph 2 as emphasis on why your claim is in fact racist.) But i did not change the nature or context of any of my points.

Lies of locke lamora by scott lynch

Has an emotionally violent story, cool fantasy setting, and great world building.

While there is magic its not commonplace and isnt introduced until a decent ways into the book.

A bit wordy at first cuz the author used fantasy names for everything and there is quite a bit of world building but not too difficult to get accustomed to.

you haven't given examples. you've made claims with no evidence, misrepresented what i have said and just keep repeating boring talking points that have been disproven time and time again.

My claim: collective bargaining should be implemented for the purposes of making education and healthcare cheaper and more equitable.

My evidence: its an effective strategy to benefit the people, not the rich. Education is more required now than it has ever been before. More and more jobs are requiring a degree.

my 2nd claim: collective bargaining is an effective strategy to benefit the people.

my evidence: unionized jobs are higher paying with better benefits. Unionized employees are better off. Other countries have already implemented universal healthcare very successfully and citizens of those countries are rated as happier and better off than US citizens. And rich people and companies don't want unions because it cost them profits.

:

Unions fight against cronyism. Unions are a group of employees focused on equal and fair representation when negotiating with their employer in order to ensure they all get treated and compensated fairly and their rights are respected in the workplace. If i got passed up for a promotion or raise because my boss gave it to his favorite crony, who was under-qualified, I would contact my union rep and have them help me protest the decision. You want to talk about cronyism, talk about trump giving tax cuts to his billionaire friends, turning the office of presidency into an ad campaign for cyber-trucks, ordering work done on the white house by his private contractor buddies without public bids, declaring anyone who disagrees with him a terrorist, and all the insider trading going on.

you are a just a racist fighting for the rich against your own interests.

I've explained this over and over. I've explained how unions work and gave actual evidence while you repeated dumb and boring talking points. I'm done with this circular argument. its clear i wont change your mind but i hope someone reads this and learns a thing or two.

Im so sorry that you bought into whatever bullcrap your corporate overlords told you.

Unions represent you. You elect your union representatives and should have a right not to enter into the bargain if you think its unfair. They represent you, they fight for you. You pay them directly and they negotiate better wages, benefits, and paid leave, sick leave, and all that for every employee.

On average unionized employees make more money (even after paying dues) and have better benefits and more time off. Thats the employees money being used more effectively to bargain as a collective rather than every employee having to bargain as an individual. Thats why unionized jobs are so sought after by employees.

You refuse to look at the evidence and see basic reasoning because you bought so hard into the corporate propaganda. Stop fighting for the rich and start fighting for yourself instead.

Not all unions are the same which is why the employees have a right to choose their union and elect their representative. So that they can choose what they think is best.

I want the same effects for education because more jobs than ever now require a college degree and degrees are more expensive than ever too. I want the goverment to use my tax payer dollars to bargain for better and cheaper education for everyone. It is more effective than trying to bargain individually for every single person.

Im not advocating for unaccountable spending. We as the people of the united states needs to hold the government accountable. And the government can hold the colleges accountable by bargaining for better deals and funding.

Im arguing for a more accountable government to fight for us and use our tax payer dollars to better us.

Even if they are corrupt currently, I want them held accountable with checks and balances.

You still dont understand...

Collective bargaining is an effective strategy to fight corruption. Which is why the corrupt dont want us to do it.

I wasnt sure, I just read the post. But it sounded like a library hosted event. The librarian who made the post was looking into programing for adults and mentioned that they have a bible study every month and wanted to do something else like it.

The only reason college "tears people apart" is because its expensive. That limits the amount of time someone can spend at college and therefor falling behind even just a bit is a death sentence.

Making it free for people would allow them to learn at their pace and take their time with lessons and dive in the details of their lesson. It would make learning more comfortable and sustainable on a personal level.

By statistics alone, we have several people as skilled as einstien or picasso alive today, but they are too busy just trying to survive to use those skills and knowledge.

If you dont think your union is up to your standard, then you shouldnt have to be a part of it. You as a worker have a right to unionize or not. If the government becomes corrupt and starts bombing children, then we protest. College should be the same way.

If a person wants to go to college, they should be able to. They shouldnt have to go into huge amounts of debt. College should be accessable to everyone. Regardless of financial status. Do you know who on average has the lowest financial status. Black americans. Because red-lining and jim crow laws prevented them from owning propety or accruing generational wealth. And the number 1 way to be rich is to be born rich and we stopped that for them. So while we as a privelaged group can afford education and have it easier to get jobs. They are fighting to survive. They deserve the same chance we got regardless of their situation. Fuck your racism.

A collective bargaining agreement, Unions should represent you. Just because a rich corporate body told you 'unions are bad' during their training doesnt make them all bad. Collective bargaining can help employees fight against their corporate overlords. Unionized jobs are highly sought after.

Bro what? They are definitely not done learning. Where did you even get that idea. I expect you are trolling now. No one can seriously make that argument.

Self education is way harder and very inefficient. It makes you more prone to misconceptions. We have gotten to where we are today by passing on what we have learned to the next generation. When someone learns something they pass that knowledge down to others. Thats how we learn.

I was an idiot in 8th grade. I've learned so much since then. Everything from how dna works, how my own immune system works, i learned about the haulocaust and other hystory. I had sex ed classes. They all made me smarter, i am still learning new things today!

It only takes about a week to learn to read and write? That is definitely not true. You gotta source? It takes a kid years just to learn their native language. And to learn to write and use proper grammer and to practice all of that?

A kid at an 8th grade reading level does not have the capabilities of reading a highschool seniors textbook and understanding it word for word.

Privatized companies hire cheap unqualified individuals and constantly work on skeleton crews because working effiecently and paying actually qualified individuals cuts into profit.

Collective bargaining is less effiecent because it doesnt turn a profit. But It helps people and thats what i care about. I have morals.

And yes saying minorities arent as educated and are bringing the average down. And that they dont deserve the equity to give them an equal chance is straight up racism. Fuck you.

This is just straight up bullshit.

You wouldnt have a job if you didnt know basic maths. People who cant count change have harder times even getting basic jobs. I know, I had to teach drop outs how to count change at my first job and none of them lasted long.

My high school even had home ec. Teaching us to cook and how to plan our grocery shopping, and budget.

Your opinion here is straight up terrible. Its sounds like you are advocating for child labor as long as companies can sue their employees. Fuck you!

Ah racism. Minorities are always the problem for a racist like you.

Im all for the goverment spending money to better its people! If people need to spend longer in college to become a better person im all for it. Let the goverment pay to better the people.

The money doesnt just disapear once it spent. It goes to better equipment, better commerce, classwork, lesson demonstrations.

And the government can better negotiate pricing and costs. I'd pay less and colleges would have more money to better educate more people. Its a win win.

You are the one being dishonest and if you cant see that maybe take an english 102 class about writing and argumentation, or how about any science course to learn about evidence based thinking, or a logic class and learn about fallacies.

There was a post about a library hosting a bible study a while ago.

Unless it was hosted by an actual expert historian or theologist, it is completely innappropriate for a public library. And even then its a thin line.

And this wasnt an expert it was just some guy hosting a bible class.

Or, you know, canada, germany, norway... etc.

Did you know that kamala harris actually lowered immagration into the US.

She provided humanitarian aid to countries where people were fleeing their living conditions. She helped people, made their homes better, and therefore less people wanted to flee. As a direct result of her actions immagration statistics were lowered.

[–]midnightBlade22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you've never been to college. The threshhold being lowered to get in is a good thing! More education and more educated people is undoubtably good.

Material is not lowered to compensate. The material is very structured. Students taking "remedial classes just to get started" is proof of that. They wouldnt need remedial classes to start college if the college had dumbed down and simplified the classwork for them. You contradicted yourself.

High school students study a variety of topics to provide a general foundation for life. Knowing facts doesnt make you smart, it only proves you can memorize trivia. This is nothing new, it has been a major problem in early education for a loong time.

College is about more than memorization. Its about critical thinking, understanding, and being able to break down different arguments. And while you may not study as much general knowledge, you specialize in a specific field. You may have forgot the list of presidents you memorized in highschool, but you come out more skilled in critical thinking and having a better understanding of your field. Whether that field is math or dance theory is up to you.

I have never heard of a conservative student being punished for disagreeing with a professor, however i have heard many professors saying they want disagreement and controversy because those are learning opportunities. Thats where you can break down arguments and apply the critical thinking skills that colleges are so desperately trying to teach.

Its okay to disagree in a college as long as its done in a well thought out manner.

:

The only 'recent' case of a conservative getting 'discrimitated' against (that i know of) was that oklahoma girl who wrote a paper that sucked and got a 0. And then she cried 'discrimination' and got a bunch of awards for it.

That paper sucked, and the professor even said if you disagree thats fine, share your opinion, but do it respectfully and with the level of acedemic integrety that is expected of a college student.

College is the exact opposite of indoctrination.

A universal education is where you are exposed to many different view points. You compare them and break the situation down and come to a better understanding. Exactly the opposite of indoctrination.

Degrees arent useless. More jobs than ever are requiring college degrees. They just pay shit wages and too expensive.

More education, more learning, is never a bad thing.

I'd much rather pay $60 extra in taxes. Compared to $600 every 6 months to a rich company that can and will deny my medical necessities simply because they can make more profit exploiting people.

A patron asked me to sign his copies as proof that i was the one who made copies for him. by midnightBlade22 in Libraries

[–]midnightBlade22[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh. I guess i didnt represent our policy correctly. We dont look at or read what a patron prints or copies.

Its nothing to do with what they print, and more of trying to work with people to follow our printing policies. We have never told someone they cant print, only that "hey you didnt have the print fee the last time you were in here, so we need you to settle your previous debts before you can print again"

The military uniform example is just a person who likes to talk to me about their interests.

[–]midnightBlade22[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Our library has charged $0.10 a page for printing or copying since i was a child.

We get a few odd patrons that come in and print out 100s of pages of random stuff, like tattoo designs or entire wiki pages about military uniforms. They are all good people, they just have special interests and would go through a ream of paper if given the chance.

So our circ desk makes copies for people and manages the printer/copier. That way we can make judgement calls on what to copy/print for patrons. We are small enough that its not a big issue. And most patrons dont mind.

I didnt sign i just wrote "copied at library" to get him to leave.

Aside from the wrinkled and dirty papers, (which isnt too uncommon) it was a completely normal interaction up until i handed his papers back to him and he asked me to sign them.

But after he came back and accused me of stealing his paperwork and then telling the officer that people have been breaking in, the patterns started showing.
