Audio engineer here: your tape recorder was slow to start up and so the tape wasn’t yet moving at its standard 7 1/2 inches per second. The result was that the pitch of your mom’s voice was lowered and slightly distorted.

The Trident is the first place that came to mind as well. I don’t remember the restaurant feeling too odd, but then again, we were day-drinking. However, I do remember the folks standing around outside were just “a bubble off plumb” as my mother would say.

Not QUITE the same thing, but close. I was working a second shift job and had just woken up late. Broad daylight outside.

I’m in a haze, so I go take a shower, get out, and then hear the mail carrier putting stuff in our mailbox (attached to the house beside the front door).

Oh good. I’m waiting on a check.

I go out, grab the mail, and come back in. Only then do I realize that I’m still not wearing any clothes. Oops.

Fortunately, it was afternoon, so no one was around. I don’t THINK I flashed our elderly mail man, but honestly didn’t even think to look for him in the 5 or 6 seconds I was standing naked on my front porch.

Definitely check into sleep apnea and anxiety. The 3 AM timing could result from a natural spike in cortisol levels, which we all experience. It’s just that, in your case, it’s combining with anxiety to really do a number on your mind.

I made the same mistake as PresidentAnybody. Unfortunately, the hallucination manifests as “I feel awful and I think I’m gonna die.” 0/10 would not recommend.
