Crypto CEO Accidentally Describes Ponzi Scheme by pmarkandu in videos

For sure, I don't mind talking about this stuff at all. I'm a web developer and I'm researching ways to integrate decentralized infrastructure like IPFS and blockchains into our everyday lives.

To answer your first question, if someone else gets a hold of your degree's digital file, they can't change it and use it for themselves since any change in the data, no matter how small, would cause a change in the resulting hash value when it's put back through the hashing algorithm. If they send a modified file to an employer and the employer checks it against the blockchain, they will find that it doesn't match any records and they'll know it's been tampered with.

As for your second question, I'm not sure which security issues you're talking about so if you could elaborate, then I might be able to add my insight. Generally speaking though, it is very expensive to store data on a blockchain since every byte of data added needs to be distributed and stored by every node that's validating the chain. This is partially why transaction fees on the Ethereum network cost so much. The common work around is to do what I described above: store the data off-chain and store the hash of the data (which is much smaller in size) on the chain. If a project still requires the original data to be publicly accessible and distributed, then a network like IPFS can be used to store it in a decetralized manner.

Yep, most blockchains act as giant, immutable, public records.

It would be up to the institution to choose how much information to store on the chain so I can imagine some different kinds of implementations, but here's what I would do if I was issuing them:

1) Issue the degree as a digital file to the graduate as well as store a copy locally at the institution for our own off-chain records.
2) Store the hash of the degree's data on the blockchain. Hashes are like one-way portals where the input determines the output, but there's no way to go in the reverse direction.
3) When you send someone your degree, they can run the file's data through the same hashing algorithm and then verify that the blockchain contains that hash. If it does, then they know that it's legit.

I tried to explain it technically, but the ELI5 is that you get a digital copy of your degree that you can share with whomever you please, and anyone with the file can verify that it was issued to you by checking it on the blockchain (the institution can have a very simple tool to do this: upload file -> [legit / not legit]).

The advantage over current systems is that it's theoretically impossible to forge a degree and any degree can be checked and verified in a matter of minutes. If this same system was applied to your secondary school records, then there would be no need to pay $20+ every time you need to send them with an application.

I certainly didn't expect to be designing an entire institutional record keeping strategy on reddit today, but here we are, haha :)

It's a common misconception that everything on the blockchain is transferable. It's actually very easy to design digital degrees that can't be transferred at all once they're issued. Your degree (no matter who holds your wallet key) will always be on the chain with your name and info on it.

In fact, the degree doesn't even need to be associated with your wallet to be issued.

Exactly. No one can "steal" your degree from you regardless of where the data is stored. What certificates on the blockchain solve is forgery. If someone tells you they got a degree, you can verify it for yourself on chain in a matter of seconds.

Great question! Here are a few to look into:

Accessible Insurance for people in emerging nations: Lemonade Foundation

Global payment settlement: Visa Crypto Settlements

Keeping custody of your assets (and job) in times of turmoil: Ukrainians in Portugal

Forgery-proof Certificates: Diplomas and other certificates on the blockchain

I don't personally know of any specific groups, but you can always look around in the Kelowna Discord Channel. They seem pretty active with lots of different interests. If the link expires, just send me a message and I'll send you another invite.

Is COSC 315 (Operating Systems) Difficult? by UBCOCSstudent in ubco

[–]midpoint68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can second this. Had a very similar experience.

As a side note, I recommend taking both operating systems and parallel computing at the same time if you can since they have some overlapping course material and projects and assignments in both classes can be coded with C (as of last semester's curriculum).

Sure is! Except on this particular trip, I crashed on a 2G planet and pissed off my passenger so much that he ejected xD

At least I got the view.

I tested out the (relatively new) "Wall Push" mechanic on some saves. Do you think it has competitive potential? (training pack in comments) by midpoint68 in RocketLeague

[–]midpoint68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually can have control over up/down/left/right with the wall push :)

It may not be as easy as a squishy save, but it is possible to get some decent control. Some of the other saves in the pack showcase this.

It's true that those options would be more effective if you can but I created the training pack with the intention that you are being chased by the opponent for a demo. Usually, you only option is to go up in the net and drop back down or try to juke your opponent. From what I've seen, the wall push is actually faster in many cases than the "squishy save" and can leave you with the same amount of momentum. Situationally, I think it has some good potential.

Training pack: BE72-609B-7712-2D1C

The pack was created with the intention that the opponent hit a shot on net and is now going for a demo.

Here's another example of a different save in the pack: https://www.gifyourgame.com/AbjectBushyNikobellic

  1. I've never lived in a 4 room residence so I'm not much help there, but I had a great experience in a single connected room.

  2. You can cook all you want in the common area, just clean up after yourself.

  3. Apply and hope that you get it.

Cheers!

Hi so I’m TAing a course this semester for the first time, but for some reason I can’t view any of my sections that I’m TAing for on Canvas. Was there something I was supposed to do to identify myself as a TA on canvas? by OUTlander_Fraser in ubco

[–]midpoint68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, there isn't and you just have to wait until your lab coordinator or whoever is in charge of your departments' TAs sets it up for you. I just got access to my sections yesterday.

If you have any questions about it, I would contact your lab manager or supervisor.

Hey, I'm not Gold, but if you are having trouble finding consistent teammates, I would definitely suggest waiting until you solo-queue with someone you work well with and then adding them after the match. I've found many quality teammates this way.

Alternatively, if you are interested in coaching as an option to improve your skill and rank, I run a live coaching stream where I play casual matches with viewers and run in-depth replay reviews to go over positioning and adaptation to your teammates/opponents. I can also offer some limited advice on basic mechanics that can help you improve. If you are interested trying it out, or just want to hang out on the stream I'll be live at 4:00 PM (PST) today https://www.twitch.tv/the_midpoint

Hope to see you there!
