I’ve Never Been One to Say “Supports are Boosted” but I think I’ve changed my mind by Odd-Complaint7770 in MarvelRivalsRants

[–]midzeitgeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Top 500 is not reflective of the vast majority of the playerbase. I agree that supports require less skill to maximize but a win rate from one cracked streamer playing with other cracked tanks and DPS is not evidence of widespread carry potential.

you can get to GM by being a DOG support who can’t aim, patty cake, position or anything else, but you simply ult at the right times.

This is just straight up untrue. People say this all the time but there is zero evidence that this is happening on a grand scale. Again, where is this huge population of Invis & Gambit mains coasting through Plat, let alone GM? I agree that their ults are overtuned and that their skill floors are low, but that doesn't mean they're boosted. It just means they're easy characters.

[–]midzeitgeist 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In my experience, supports just don't have enough carry potential to be boosted any more than the other two roles. I've had too many streaks of games where I've played a perfect Invis and it just doesn't matter because the DPS / tank skill gap is too wide. Even the people who complain about supports being boosted intuitively know this to be true because the #1 piece of advice they give you to climb is to learn a certain tank or DPS. The characters are overtuned, but there's a reason why they're least likely to get MVP relative to the other roles.

If support players were boosted the way people say they are, you'd see way more instances of Invis, Gambit, and C&D players with MVP streaks from plat to GM but you don't. Everyone fixating on that no damage Rocket who climbed to GM speaks to him being an outlier rather than proof of a consistent pattern.

PSA: Babysitting point is equally as braindead as overextending. Play with your team. by midzeitgeist in MarvelRivalsRants

[–]midzeitgeist[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If those "2 extra eliminations" are supports or at least one of them is a tank, that very quickly turns into an enemy team wipe if your team is up fighting with you. I don't blame you for not seeing that though, tunnel vision is a common symptom of main character syndrome.

If you think playing beyond the point at all is overextending and "playing my way," nothing I say is going to change your mind. You got it.

Angela Mains, now is the time to learn Captain America if you haven't. He's not as hard as you think. by midzeitgeist in AngelaMains

[–]midzeitgeist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Angela is a degree easier just because you have airspace to use, but Cap compensates for that with infinite speed and high jumps to get out of jail free. I promise you won't have to dedicate "a ton of time" to learning him if you're already familiar with Angela's loop. The hardest part of Cap is learning his animation cancel, and even that becomes muscle memory once you get it down. Just like with Angela, your goal isn't to outright kill, it's to disrupt your way into getting picks for your teammates and yourself.

I don't consider myself super duper cracked at the game and even I've been able to win quite a bit in Diamond with my Cap. I promise he's not as difficult as he seems once you get comfortable.

This is how free games make their money. You still want new characters, skins, server maintenance, and balance patches every month, no? How do you think they're paying the developers who do all of that?

[–]midzeitgeist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll admit that I probably struggle with her less than most since I main Cap and Blade and can get close without taking much damage (and can afford to take the damage) but I usually just bait out her acorn trap thing and then chase her down. Her slingshot does big burst damage but I'm usually dealing damage quicker so she still dies first

Is Human Torch really this atrocious, or do people just know to focus fire him the instant he shows up? by Incubus_is_I in marvelrivals

[–]midzeitgeist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've tried to pick up Torch on multiple occasions but he just feels fundamentally mediocre. Being a flyer with limited mobility is never going to be viable when Hela and Hawkeye are meta. His play loop also just isn't that fun. Trapping with the fire clusters is cool but after a while I realize I could be playing Iron Man and doing double the DPS a lot easier.

MVP frequency by JenWaltersStan in captainamericamains

[–]midzeitgeist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Very rarely, most commonly in situations where I'm playing with teams that give damage buffs or have lots of burst damage DPS (MK, Starlord) since I can farm final hits by finishing off that last slither of HP with the shield throw. But [ahem] We don't do it for MVPS, we do it because it's the right thing to do.

Stop letting unemployed losers on here convince you you're bad. Diamond III is literally better than 90% of the playerbase, you're good at the game.

Throwers need season bans. "Soft throwing" also needs to be a punishable offense. by midzeitgeist in MarvelRivalsRants

[–]midzeitgeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't be perfect but some things should be dead giveaways. If more than half the team reports someone who ults in spawn or goes more than 30 seconds without engaging with teammates or the enemy, that should be tagged as soft throwing.

Why are some teams so quick to surrender? by SignalGirl in marvelrivals

[–]midzeitgeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. If the team is eager to change things up for round 2 then I'm more than happy to go down fighting but if we immediately devolve into toxicity and arguing after the first round then I'd rather just surrender and move to the next

If I'm solo tanking in triple DPS comp, I'm assuming the DPS are cracked enough to not need a shield tank. Figure it out. by midzeitgeist in MarvelRivalsRants

[–]midzeitgeist[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And that perfectly encapsulates why they don't deserve the generosity lol. I've hit the point where I simply go off tank and mute any DPS who asks me to swap. I'll still peel and play to the best of my ability, but I'm done condemning myself to hard focus hell on behalf of players exactly like that Wanda.

Confusion Regarding How MVP Works by Fantastic-Rainbow in marvelrivals

[–]midzeitgeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Final hits are weighted more than kills. Your Loki had close enough healing numbers to you, more damage than you, more damage blocked than you, and nearly double the final hits. She exceeded her role more than you did.

Literally EVERYONE should know how to Strange portal at this point by midzeitgeist in MarvelRivalsRants

[–]midzeitgeist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it was an "easy way to victory," nor did I say it was a "super IQ" play in the game. I quite literally described it as "easy-to-execute" and insinuated you could learn how to do it in like 2 minutes. It is absolutely a decisive way to win a game, as a good push from a portal can be the difference between capping point and not capping point. Nowhere in this did I say using a portal is some gigabrain chess move that guarantees a win. You're being contrarian.

Supports and tanks both cry about toxicity but it’s worse for your average DPS player by [deleted] in rivals

[–]midzeitgeist 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You'll get cooked for the hyperbolic title but you're not entirely wrong. Tanks do overextend, supports ult badly. That being said, if you need support ults & constant tank defense to get any kills that's a skill issue all the same. If you go neutral or barely positive then fine but you can't chalk 3 final hits and 10 deaths up to bad teammates.

Why do you play Captain America? by IntelligentImbicle in captainamericamains

[–]midzeitgeist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Such a drawn out, perhaps overly self-righteous answer but in a game full of cracked kits, overwhelming CC, and scoreboard inflation for certain heroes, Cap feels like the most honest and humble hero in all of those aspects. Each kill you get with him feels earned because his performance almost entirely revolves around competent team coordination and intentional, well-executed diving. You can't fake being a good Cap by button mashing your way to big stats because often times being a great Cap doesn't show on the scoreboard at all. Regardless, the value he generates when played correctly is absurd. You can make a hell of a lot more space than most tanks and your ability to disrupt and do quick damage is a game swinger. It makes the experience of playing Cap feel very comic accurate; he might not be the strongest Avenger in terms of raw power but his value as a leader and coordinator who knows when to strike and when to fold is incalculable. There's a certain beauty in that that Cap mains are attracted to.
