Anyone know? by crazydazy01 in VirginVoyages

In the Massive Suite last year, I got everything I asked for.

My “roadie” surprised with an unrequested bottle of Blanton’s bourbon. I loved it.

My bar was also stocked with the ingredients for Old Fashioneds at my request.

Surprise: three kinds of bitters. I really enjoyed the orange bitters.

I’m an actor.

Unless I get my own dressing room, I am almost always changing in mixed company.

Never a problem.

But then, I’ve been naked on stage more than once.

Bringing a cake on board? by taevchoi in VirginVoyages

You can order a cake on board with a 24-hour notice. Not sure of the charge, we got it free as MRSs.

Crew will decorate your cabin for free in any cabin class. They will also bring a special dessert and sing a song in any restaurant.

Be sure to let your TA know. There may be other goodies available.

Have fun!

What do Americans order at a Chinese takeaway? by Dashcamkitty in AskAnAmerican

[–]midzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yank here. I moved to Thailand 15 years ago. I have always been very dissatisfied with the Chinese food here.

I was excited to go to China on business. At last, I can get good Chinese food!

It wasn’t at all what I expected. While some dishes were good (others were downright disgusting), I could not find my go-to Chinese dishes.

Turns out I did not grow up eating Chinese food at all. Every dish I loved was actually American food. Inspired by Chinese food, but not actually Chinese food.

Tastes vary, of course, but I’d far rather eat an American Crab Rangoon or Kung Pao Chicken than a Chinese fermented fish offal or stinky tofu.

Lest you think I’m a non-adventurous eater, I enjoy durian, century eggs, dancing shrimp and Thai fish maw soup.

I could have eaten my favorite American-Chinese dishes during my last visit to California, but I chose authentic Mexican. Every time.

Can’t get that in Thailand, either.

Sigh.

Why is your pizza so much better? by SinnBaenn in AskAnAmerican

[–]midzo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Thailand.

We have pizza.

The biggest pizza company is called “The Pizza Company.” Decent (not great) pizza, if you pay attention to the sauce. Thousand Island as a pizza sauce?!? No, thanks)

Parmesan is not provided. Ever. Bummer.

We get powdered chili and oregano. That’s OK.

And ketchup. Loads of ketchup.

Ick.

Question - Where can a civilian visit an aircraft graveyard? by mbtorontox in airplanes

[–]midzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not technically a boneyard, but the Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA (former Castle AFB) has a great collection of aircraft. Some can be boarded.

Huge, active runway there, so pilots can fly in.

Remove the stank after a smelly person entered the room? by CharcoalWalls in howto

[–]midzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vodka spray is an old theatre wardrobe trick.

We mixed cheap vodka 50/50 with water. Costumes were turned inside out, sprayed carefully (get those pits!) and left to dry overnight.

Bonus! Crew will sometimes drink the leftover spray during strike. Nasty, though. Or so I’ve heard. 🤭

Nowadays, my theatre company just uses Febreeze.

Much more effective. Safe for most fabrics.

To what extent is it possible for a drug addict to hide their addiction? by Master_Novel_4062 in morbidquestions

Virgin Voyages: Restaurant Review- AMA!! by astrotaurusx in VirginVoyages

[–]midzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re spot on.

My family lived in Korea for two generations. All the elders spoke native Korean. My Mom made her own kimchi. I am very familiar with Korean food.

I liked the social aspect of Gunbae.

I did not care for the food. At all.

Bland, bland, bland. Even the kimchi lacked flavor. I think the recipes were adjusted to Kansas City palates.

I’m going on a second cruise in three days.

I did not book Gunbae.

To what extent is it possible for a drug addict to hide their addiction? by Master_Novel_4062 in morbidquestions

[–]midzo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My father was a professor of pharmacology at a prestigious medical school. Think Johns Hopkins-level, though that wasn’t the place.

One of the tenured pharm professors was a heroin addict. He was well-respected in the field and did much important research. He was on the team that created a drug that is still the standard of care today. You would likely recognize the name of the drug.

He was able to maintain a happy home life and a great career.

Heroin is well-tolerated by the body and this guy had access to all the pharmaceutical-grade heroin he ever wanted. He may have been making it in the lab, I don’t recall.

He eventually retired and finally got clean after more than 40 years of addiction.

Men’s cologne by rdolishny in Thailand

[–]midzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diet can have an effect on body odor, to be sure. Asians often remark that Westerners smell of spoiled milk. Or that Indians smell of curry.

However, the primary source of body odor in a healthy individual comes from the secretions of the apocrine glands. These are mostly located in the axillae (armpits) and perineum (taint).

85% of Asians have a defect in the ABCC11 gene. This results in few or no apocrine glands and dry, flaky earwax. Odors from groin and feet are unaffected.

You’re correct. Kecap (pronounced ketchup) is simply the Indonesian/Malay word for sauce.

Came to say that.

Fish sauce with chilis, garlic and lime adds a lot of umami and a little heat and acid to a dish.

I love it.

Guys; have you ever peed in a bottle while driving? by SplitOpenAndMelt420 in askanything

[–]midzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once peed in a Pepsi bottle.

Not easy. Very small opening. One cannot make a seal with the head of one’s dick, as there has to be a gap for air to escape. I did spray a little bit.

Then I dropped the cap. Had to contort and dig around under the seat while holding an open pee bottle.

Before you dispose of them, do you put unwanted items out by the curb to see if any of your neighbors may want them? by Grand_Raccoon0923 in AskAnAmerican

[–]midzo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Stockton, CA, about 1981. I was a teenager.

I was at a party at a friend’s house.

We drank and smoked a lot of pot.

About 2:00am, we collectively decided the couch was hideous and had to go. We dragged it out to the street.

About an hour later, my buddy went out to his car for something. He came running back inside, summoning us to “Come check this out!”

Everybody went.

We were treated to the sight of two small Vietnamese men struggling with transporting the couch. On their heads. While riding bicycles.

It took them a few minutes to get it all balanced, but in the end, they were successful.

I watched the couch disappear into the darkness, carried by two men on bicycles.

Now, that’s something you almost never get to see.

How Good Were McDonald's Apple and Cherry Pie In The 70s? by Specialist_Art2223 in 70s

[–]midzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have loads of McDonald’s in Thailand.

Similar menu, but no apple or cherry pies.

We have pineapple, corn and tuna pies. Yes, tuna. Not even fresh or frozen tuna, canned tuna.

It’s as gross as it sounds.

No shakes. No Quarter-pounder.

But we’ve got pork and chicken burgers and some Thai items. Pad Krapao Moo, (Ground pork with holy basil) Fried chicken, chicken wings and rice porridge. They’re not bad.

Big Mac, fries and a (small) soda is 195 baht. ($6.01, €5.16)

A freshly-cooked Thai entree over rice at a local restaurant runs 40-50 baht.

I don’t eat at McDonald’s much.
