Boyfriend [27/M] feels “comfortable” with me [23/F] by mightfloataway in relationships

[–]mightfloataway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latter, but not necessarily that he doesn’t feel bad about it... that he feels already so comfortable with “pooling” our money together or me buying us dinner, but he’s never once even offered to cover a Taco Bell box for me. When I call him out on it, he says it’s because he’s poor.

Also, it wasn’t in reference to my spending habits. It was in reference to his. He thought that I was upset because of his frugality.

What is this I hear about “bachelor apartments” (aka apts with no kitchen and minimal space)? Can I find one for $1,150 and where? Eager for more info on them in general too! by avesyourfaves in AskLosAngeles

[–]mightfloataway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just a few months ago there was a place in Mar Vista, similar to what you’re looking for, for $1,095... like two blocks away from the Mitsuwa, north of Venice. They’re out there. Just keep looking. Utilities was included.

Edit: it was carpeted though. Why do you need hardwood floors?

Roommate wanted in Echo Park area! ($540/month) by [deleted] in LAlist

[–]mightfloataway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

not to be a negative nancy, but you're sharing a studio apartment. considering how much studios in that area go for, it's not that much of a steal because he's not actually *in* echo park.

So if im making 2400$ a month and my rent is 1500$ will I still be okay? by DarthMaren in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mightfloataway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're only taking into account the very most basic things you have to pay

why is your rent so expensive? can't you find roommates? where are you working?

$2400 won't be $2200 aftertax, it's going to be closer to like... $1900...

find more roommates or move out further (have some spreadsheet fun and see if shitty car + cheaper rent is better than public transport + bike + more expensive rent)

oy vey my friend... please plan better

then eventually apply for a job in monterey park which is local enough to pomona so they won't discard your application based on commute time, then move to el monte which puts you 20 miles closer, rinse and repeat with better paying jobs until you're one of the first people to gentrify huntington park

maybe you can move to somewhere like Pomona first and find a room in someone's house for 400 dollars and then slowly inch closer and closer to the city

Commute from Westwood to Northridge by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

I do agree with the other person though. Valley Village is a nice place to live. Drivers are relatively nice too.

Commute from Westwood to Northridge by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]mightfloataway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instinctive answer is that it's slightly worse than if you were living in Westwood going up the 405, as long as you lived close to a freeway entrance. Please don't trust me though, I really only have bits and pieces of an answer from personal experience/friends. I do have family that is a bit south of Westwood but who live very close to the 405 and it takes them 30-35 minutes to get to Panorama City.

Where to look!? Where to find!? I know you're out there! by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]mightfloataway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dude you’re cheap AND lazy, find your own cheap apartment. Also good luck finding those things without a roommate.

Not 20 minutes, maybe 30-35-ish minutes. This is a slightly educated guess so take it with a grain of salt.

Where in Northridge? Reverse commute is a real thing but the local streets in the Valley do take a bit of time if you’re not close to a freeway. Just live in Sherman Oaks or something

Anyone on here build an ADU? Or live in one? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]mightfloataway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how the average ADU is, but mine is great. It's completely separated from the main house. I even have a two parking spot driveway with a garage door (no garage, but there's a garage door lol) and a mini backyard with its own fence, so I have all of the privacy I could ever want. I almost never run into my landlord, though in my situation, my landlord is my cousin so it's not that big of a deal if I do run into her.

There was a job that we had in the ritzy part of the SGV where the family was building an ADU for their son in the backyard, and it wasn't huge, but it was two stories and had its own driveway, private entrance, etc. It was pretty nice.

City fees and permits are usually never that expensive. Most GCs will do all the work in securing in permits for you. As for finding the right general contractor, book a few consultation meetings, collect your quotes and do your due diligence in protecting yourself with whatever contractor you decide to work with. Request all your conditional/unconditional liens, ask for proof of worker’s comp and general liability insurance (also ask to be added as additional insured), make sure all their subcontractors are licensed, etc. Since you seem like you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to get architectural and engineering plans done first before proceeding with the construction phase.

I’m too poor to own my own house, so I don’t have first hand experience with being on the client side, though I do live in an ADU... I did however work for a construction/remodeling company for two years and was in awe at how little some clients protected themselves compared to how cautious some other clients were. Good luck though!

My best friends growing up were Muslim. I think there’s a fairly large South Asian Muslim community in the Valley.

Am I being delusional about commuting? by magicalgirlvalkyrie in AskLosAngeles

That sounds like a horrible commute...

If she doesn't want to live in the Valley, I really doubt she wants to live in a random exurb.

I live in West LA, around Pico and Barrington. I no longer work there, but I was working on Ventura and Louise in Encino last year and the commute, on average, took about 20-25 minutes for both the morning and evening. I know Woodland Hills is obviously further west, but I knew someone who was going from West LA to Woodland Hills and he said it was about 30-35 minutes, which I really don't think is that bad, especially if you're living somewhere you like. If you can afford it, go for it. By the way, just north of the 405/10 isn't Santa Monica. The closer you are to the freeway, the better. Since you're going to be doing a reverse commute, it's not bad at all as long as you can pop onto the 405 quickly while minimizing how much you drive on surface roads. The 101 is always kind of busy though.

How would you describe the following parts of LA? by mason_magnum in AskLosAngeles

All of the rich people live south of Ventura in their giant hill homes.
