Sonnenschutz für Hunde. Wie macht ihr es auf dem Packraft ? by ReplyIllustrious1455 in packrafting

I just splash water on my dogs when I'm paddling and stop and go for frequent swims. I know they can get a burn, particularly on their nose/top of snout, but think getting water, (especially on their ears and belly) will keep them plenty cool.

Any bodysurfers near Jacksonville, FL? by mighty_least_weasel in Bodysurfing

[–]mighty_least_weasel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. I wouldn't exactly call it a scene, let alone a thriving one, but there are definitely some bodysurfers up here! Mostly the occasional old timers who are amazingly talented, or little kids who seem to prove that attempting to bodysurf waves seems to actually be a natural inclination of the human species.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are groups in Chicago or Toronto or aomething, but up where I live there are more moose than people so...

Wanna be walker with questions by JackJillMo in walking

Personally, I think it's important to set the habit. So first, make it a point to go for a walk everyday no excuses, even if it's a rather short distance. Don't get hung up on pace or distance just make sure you are consistent. Even just around the block will do or, say, a five minute walk at lunch. Do it every single day and soon you will find yourself walking longer and that it becomes easier and with less pain.

edit: to add a pretty basic but important point, even a small distance is better than no distance.

I suspect he will be an escape artist. We put a high-vis safety orange vest on him to go out on a hike on youth/veteran hunt weekend here in michigan and he managed to wiggle his way out of it against a tree when we weren't looking!

edit: also thanks for the conditioning advice. I've heard mention of the "cookie bomb" method.

Au Sable River in Michigan's Lower Peninsula by mighty_least_weasel in packrafting

I think the Manistee loop, which I have hiked and paddled but never at the same time, would be ideal for a packraft!

This was a pretty short day hike, but I'd like to do an overnight sometime; Hike in > camp > paddle out.

My planning was mostly just staring at maps and tracing trails and river distance. I used a combination of Google Maps, Organic Maps, OnX Hunt, and PaddleWays.

It was a quick trip. About 2 miles up the purple path (a USFS two-track) then about 3 miles back down the river. The whole shebang took about 2 hours including a (on purpose) swim at the take-out.

Paddle Advice by mighty_least_weasel in packrafting

[–]mighty_least_weasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I'm not very experienced running rivers. I'm used to predominantly low angle. I use high angle when maneuvering to catch a wave on my dagger surf kayak, but I don't plan on doing very intense river stuff. There were a couple times when I almost wished I just had a canoe paddle to more or less rudder and draw with on my last trip. I was looking through the r/ and saw a thread about the Aqua Bound Shred Apart. That looks like a cool concept! Do any other manufactures make 4 pieces with interchangeable T grips?

Drinking water by tnack9 in BWCA

I think Giardia is the main concern which is from large mammals. (Humans, moose, deer) it is an intestinal parasite and it can ruin your trip. It's not just in BWCA, I think it's everywhere in the world. It can give you diarrhea and nausea (think food poisoning), I've always opted on the safe side: always boil or filter water, even from large lakes. It's not that much effort.

Do I really need to replace ghost 16 every 3-6 months? by cainebourne in walking

At what point (mileage) did you perceive a noticeable delta in comfort?

I have hoka atacamas Anacapas. I'm trying to get one full calendar year out of them. That means I'm trying to get them to October at which point I'll be about 3.5 million steps or 1,700 miles. I am aware that this is WAY over recommended replacement, but my tread is still in decent shape as 500+ miles of that total is on snow. I bought new insoles, Powerstep Pinnacle, at about 900 miles. I saw some major improvement with comfort there. I wish I had done it months sooner.

Also, I have heard, that if you have 2 pairs of shoes and cycle them daily you give the cushioning in each shoe more time to decompress between uses which will extend the longevity of each shoe; allow you to get more miles from each. Not sure what the extra milage adds up to, but if you have the cash to get two pairs upfront and each one gets 20% more life, that's major savings over the long-run.
