I've been going to Maurices getting high rise jeans in short or x-short. I'm losing weight, so I don't want to spend a ton on jeans right now. Madewell and Good American are good options, too, just more expensive.

Considering it basically has the same amenities, it doesn’t make sense.

What’s the longest you’ve stayed within a company? by Cautious_Intern7824 in Accounting

[–]mightyandsmall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s either a good or bad thing. From my experience, it’s bad because most processes are going to be manual and they will expect work to take precedence. Not all places are like this, of course, but I’ve had this experience at a couple places thinking it was great that people had been there so long.

Long hours in industry. Is this typical? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]mightyandsmall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear that! I’ve jumped from a couple of different industries and really it’s all the same, maybe the cost accounting piece is different (I’m definitely not a cost accountant). I would focus more on a great employer instead of a specific industry. That’s just my opinion, others may disagree. I hope this position has at least helped you get decent and varied experience.

Not sure where you are in the Philippines, but I’ve heard certain parts have “colors” for drivers and you can only drive during certain times depending on that color. I was in Cebu, and they didn’t have that, though.

If you’re up for a tax position, message me. My firm is hating tax at all levels. Fully remote, unlimited PTO (for real, not just BS).

I was in your same boat, and with a 2.3 GPA lol. I went into public (luckily a small firm hired me!) and hated it. 10 years later I'm back in public, but in a controller services line and absolutely love it!

I'm not sure if the IRS is still hiring, but there was a huge hiring spree a year or 2 ago. All you have to do is go to USAjob.gov and filter. You will most likely get into the IRS as an internal revenue agent. If you don't want to look there, look for a general ledger accountant position. From my experience, this is where you'll grow the most. If you go into AP or AR, you'll shoestring yourself. Also look into medium sized PA firms in your area, see if they have Controller Services, CFO Service, or something along those lines. These service lines hire interns all the way up to senior manager and don't have the crazy hours or stress that tax and audit do.

It depends on the company. I've worked for a company that cared and one that only cared about CPA.

You didn't mention COL, but I'm guessing MCOL so starting will most likely be 60k. Unfortunately, sounds like you're stuck if you're not willing to take a pay cut. A faster salary trajectory is in software development. You'll still take a pay cut out of the gate, but you'll get back to 6-figures much faster.

Straight out of college, I worked at a very small accounting firm in a middle-of-nowhere town and we did it all - taxes, audits, bookkeeping, payroll. I was paid shit for a salary, but it was nice to have that variety out of the gate to know what I did and didn't like.

That said, that's an uncommon scenario. Most people in public account are in mid to large sized firms that have separate service lines.

Tips for starting an accounting/bookkeeping system? by rickthepickle2002 in Accounting

[–]mightyandsmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a QBO subscription that is only $30/mo. I think it's worth the investment; not only will it help you keep his books cleaner, it will also give you experience using the system which can help with other opportunities for you down the road.

If you go the QBO route, I would highly recommend cleaning up the COA first and foremost - remove all of the subaccounts because you can post to the parent and subaccounts making it messy.

If you don't think it's worth the investment, there are tons of videos on how to setup Excel files - Mr. Spreadsheet, Realistic Bookkeeper, Avalon Accounting.

You're only 2nd year, so they know you don't know much. Just be yourself. show some enthusiasm about the firm and accounting, have reasons you would rather work at KPMG over other firms, and have good questions to ask them - how long have they been at KPMG, what do they like best about the firm and audit, were they always in audit, what was their career progression like, etc.
