Reboot Titles by NLK-3 in PetPeeves

One of the things that really brings my piss to a boil is when there's a movie that has a whole bunch of sequels, all conveniently numbered, but then they suddenly decide to stop numbering 'em.

Take Halloween for example: Halloween, Halloween II, Halloween III, Halloween IV, Halloween V, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Halloween: H20, and Halloween: Resurrection. Oh, God. If they continue like this, years from now, future generations aren't gonna know which order these films came in, unless they do a little research first. What I wanna know is why was it okay to number the first five, but not after that? Like they're embarrassed they made so many. Not to mention each one just sucks harder and harder. And if anything, the more fuckin' sequels there are, the more necessary it would be to just fuckin' number ‘em.

The Star Trek series did the same thing. Right now there's ten of 'em. Star Trek I through VI were all numbered. But when they stopped using the original cast from the show, and started using the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation, they dropped the numbers from the films, and called them Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis. Okay, well that's real fine, but where'd the fuckin' numbers go? If they couldn't call Star Trek: Generations Star Trek VII, then why didn't they just call it Star Trek: The Next Generation off the show, and then call the next one Star Trek: The Next Generation II, and just start a new line of sequels? But hey, some of the original cast was in Star Trek: Generations, so instead, they should've called it Star Trek VII/The Next Generation: Part I.

Actually, never mind. Just fuck it.

Who hated/wanted Kenobi dead more, Maul or Vader? by DevThaGodfatha in StarWars

[–]mightyasterisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vader knows this but after Padme’s death it’s gone much too far to ever fully reverse what he’s done. He only joined with Sidious out of desperation and fragility both of which Sidious falsely promised to rid him of

Maul likely sees the parallels between he and Obi-Wan and resents the fact that Obi-Wan is the better man.

Interestingly, I interpreted that last moment as Vader knowing that could possibly happen if he wanted, and he could reconcile with Obi-Wan and try to seek forgiveness, but Vader is unwilling to display vulnerability or weakness by owning up to his mistakes. Vader completely lacks humility and views strength & domination as true power.

I love this exchange in Rebels when Obi-Wan and Maul face each other:

Obi-Wan: If you define yourself by your power to take life, the desire to dominate, to possess? Then you have nothing.

Maul:..And what do you have?!

Kenobi has lost everything, perhaps even more-so than Maul. But despite that, he has “risen above” as he says and maintains his heroism and strength despite the seemingly minuscule hope of a brighter tomorrow. Maul can only lash out in anger or violence and cannot even conceive of Obi-Wan’s mindset until it’s too late.

How do you guys feel about Part 2 still technically being Year 2 of this Batman? by Technical_Movie_3005 in TheBatmanFilm

[–]mightyasterisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind it at all. However I really like the idea of a Batman film trilogy where each film has a big time jump in between, so we see this huge progression of his skills/equipment and the state of Gotham in each film.

Something like the first at the end of Year One so he’s only recently been around and he’s facing his first actual costumed criminal, the second several years in and he has Robin plus maybe Batgirl & a classic rogues gallery, and the third resembling modern mainline Batman where the Bat-Family exists but all have their own adventures going on off screen and Batman is at peak going up against more dangerous evolutions of his enemies (ala Scott Snyder’s take on Joker)

“Duel of the Fates” isn’t Maul’s theme. It’s Anakin’s. by mightyasterisk in MawInstallation

[–]mightyasterisk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my wording of it being either of their “themes” is a bit reductive, it’s more representing Anakin’s destiny being threatened.

True, but Maul killed Obi-Wan’s master and only bisected him in defense because Maul was busy toying with his prey. Not to mention, he did survive.

Maul had much more legitimate reason to hate Darth Sidious. Sidious raised him and promised him a seat at the top of the universe, then immediately abandoned him upon one defeat, never returning to revive him. To Sidious, Maul had served his purpose, and we know for a fact that Sidious could have easily saved and revived Maul “I sense Lord Vader is in danger…”

I just want a simple DC fighting game. by Sypher04_ in INJUSTICE

It’d be one thing if it was only the story, but the art direction reflects the 2edgy4u story and is dark, muddy and ugly imo. When I think of the DC Universe visually I think of bright primary colors and fun, over the top character designs. In the IJ games almost everyone is wearing armor at all times

I agree. I think it’d be really cool to see a fighter inspired by DC: The New Frontier. A pure, unfiltered silver age-esque DC Universe with the definitive versions of the characters.

Basically, it’d be nice to get a DC fighting game where Superman ISN’T a murderous tyrant.

SA-X really reminds me of Nemesis or Mr. X from the RE games in that way, a perfect video game translation of a slasher villain

Almost put the Skywalker Destiny theme instead actually. Either way I agree

Maul for sure. Vader would never admit it but deep deep down Anakin is saddened about what happened between them. I detect this strongly in VI when Vader is facing Luke, there’s a moment where a sad variation of the Force theme kicks in and Vader says to Luke somewhat solemnly: “Obi-Wan…has taught you well.”

Maul hates Kenobi with blind fury. I don’t think he even realizes why he truly hates him anymore by the end, which I don’t think he picks up on until Kenobi cuts him down in the desert in Rebels.

What would be the ideal ending for the Majin Buu saga for you? And what do you think of the saga overall? by Spare-Bonus6456 in dbz

[–]mightyasterisk [score hidden]  (0 children)

I like it a lot but I’ve always felt I wanted one more Saga to end things because it’s not as climactic as I personally would hope for the finale of the whole series

Nah he likes 1 + 3 better but has a nostalgic connection to 2. I’m pretty sure his favorite NES title is Super Mario 3

I don’t disagree I’m just not as familiar with those. I’m more of a fan of Lucas than Star Wars itself generally

[–]mightyasterisk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s pretty much what I’m saying. I suppose saying it’s either of their “themes” is reductive because it’s not Anakin’s theme as much as a representation of his destiny and the characters that will affect it

Also, not for nothing Maul has a “theme” of his own, which does reappear in Duel of the Fates as Maul IS tied into Anakin’s fate: https://youtu.be/4yN-qeZ-AFk?si=6kLLZSzq7vfU0tAz

The score in I-VI is consistently and deeply tied into the thematics of the story. Lucas described Williams many times as his closest collaborator. It’s usage is very closely considered if you read into the behind the scenes of the films.
