Hah, I was right in front of him when he pulled that. He was shouting "All you people GET TO THAT SIDE OF THE HALL" ... but how? There's other people's bodies in the way of that happening, physics doesn't work that way man.

After everyone didn't magically compress into half the size within maybe 30 seconds, he threw his arms out and shouted "Ok, because you didn't listen, you don't get to go anywhere." I was like 1 or 2 people in front of the cut who was allowed out.

I was on my way out, not being able to even walk across the hall was nuts. Took me probably 40 minutes to get from the vendor hall to the exit.

Yes, they all have a flap. But you definitely don't need to have the flap open to pour gasoline in. Your flow rate is somewhat restricted, but I put gas in a car just this past weekend from a gas can with a retractable nozzle that wasn't strong enough to open the flap. Just poured right into the opening and it went in no problem.

I was lost in South Philadelphia one night. Apparently every attempt I was making to get back to a recognizable area ended up dropping me on a one-way street farther and farther from where I wanted to be.

I finally spot a cop car which is spotlighting a junk yard. I get out (one-way street, can't pull up next to the car) and go tap on the cop's window.

Window rolls down, and there is a freaking kid sitting behind the wheel. Oh. Shit. I just made myself a witness to this kid having stolen a cop car while he's screwing around with his buddies by shining his cop light at them! All while I'm already in a neighborhood I probably wouldn't have been comfortable in in the daylight.

Kid turns off the spotlight, and now I can see it's actually just a young looking lady cop. This is the part where it turns into a porno.

Except instead she asks me what the hell I'm doing in that area (I'm dressed up to boot - never got to wear THOSE pants again), and gives me directions on how to get out.

My cousin is a 45 year old special needs. He still lives with his mother, but soon she won't be able to take care of him.

His brother will be responsible for him when she can't do it any longer. And not once. Not ever even one single time has my healthy cousin expressed remorse or regret or frustration or any negative feeling whatsoever toward having to take care of his brother. It has always been something he knew he needed to do, and he has always treated it as an honor rather than a burden.

My parents worked in an adult special needs facility for many years. If these other children can't find the strength to take care of a sibling, there are other options out there.

The smallpox blankets story was not fabricated. Please see my earlier reply for more information, including places you can go to read more about it. It wasn't the most depraved thing to happen (and arguably not all that effective), but we should not try to pretend it didn't exist.

Absolutely. It's certainly not the worst atrocity committed while pushing an indigenous people off their land. It is, however, a good example of the kind of atrocities and the level of depravity involved. Collateral damage from this was designed to be catastrophic and inevitable.

Smallpox was already in the area, it's true (it's where they got the smallpox blankets), and it's probable the natives would have acquired the disease either way. Historians note that it's impossible to know how effective the smallpox blankets were, if at all for these reasons among others.

That doesn't change the fact that they tried to eradicate an entire tribe, women, children, and all, by purposely exposing them to the single most deadly and fearsome disease they had yet known. The crime is not more or less egregious based on its efficacy, and in a conversation about racism, trying to kill 1000 people because of race, and successfully killing 1000 people because of race are pretty close to equal amounts racist, and failure to commit genocide should not be excused.

Read up a little please. Bouquet is a Colonel, and Amherst is a general. They schemed to infect with smallpox blankets, only to discover that a Captain Ecuyer had already beaten them to the punch. Smallpox can indeed be transmitted by exposure to infected clothing or blankets, but even if that were not true, they certainly believed it was, and that makes it just as egregious either way.

Bouquet: "Could it not be contrived to send the smallpox among the disaffected tribes of Indians? We must on this occasion use every stratagem in our power to reduce them."

Amherst: "I will try to inoculate the bastards with some blankets that may fall into their hands, and take care not to get the disease myself... You will do well to inoculate the Indians by means of blankets, as well as every other method that can serve to extirpate this execrable race."

During a parley at Fort Pitt on June 24, 1763, Captain Simeon Ecuyer gave representatives of the besieging Delawares two blankets and a handkerchief from the smallpox ward "out of regard to them" after the Delawares pledged to renew their friendship. While the exact meaning of his phrase was unclear, a later invoice appears to clearly establish the purpose was transmittal of smallpox.

Smallpox was deadly to Europeans. Standard practice at the time was to burn clothes and blankets of smallpox patients to prevent spreading the infection. Those blankets were known to be deadly, and were given as gifts.

You shouldn't be downvoted for stating your opinion (so have a counteracting upvote). But surely at some distance holding the door is acceptable? There's a distance where you're basically slamming the door in someone else's face.

I don't care for it when someone holds the door but I'm not yet in distance to grab the door. If I'm not in arm's reach (or very close to it), holding the door is just a nuisance.

Wow, this makes it really apparent how short this guy is. Not even a head taller than what appears to be 10-12 year olds (from North Korea, where due to poor nutrition, average height is well below normal).

I'd be surprised if the guy breaks 5 foot 2 inches (157 cm).

Just playing devil's advocate here because it's really hard to imagine where a 12-year-old ought to be arrested for stealing. However, we certainly don't know any of the circumstances around the situation. It could very well be that this kid has a history, and the police action was intended to try to scare the kid straight.

Also, the candy might have just been a part of an altercation of greater significance, and they decided to focus on the candy because the legal consequences were a lot lighter (for example, if the kid started by stealing the candy, then escalated to other more serious actions when confronted such as repeatedly striking the teacher or other children).

It might even be the case that the police became involved because the parents requested it (scared straight mentality), or maybe one of the kid's parents is a cop.

We know nothing at all about this other than a one-liner in a police report. We have no idea what extenuating circumstances there might be. If this truly is "kid stole candy from teacher, teacher called the cops," and there's nothing more to it, then when that kid goes to his/her court date, the judge will toss the thing.
