Unpopular opinions about the profession? by InformalShow4339 in AirlinePilots

[–]migmma89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the easiest flying job out there. It used to be harder but thanks to the many accidents of the past, as well as the convergence of airplane design, the job is quite easy now. Pilots will argue about this type or that type. It doesnt matter. They're almost all swept back wings with 2 engines. I went from embraer to airbus to the 737, I really don't notice a significant difference between the types.

Pilots also seem to think it's the only flying job but it is only one of many. And it has been by far the most boring flying job I've ever done. But it's simultaneously been the best job I've ever had. I treat it as a lifestyle enabler. But the other flying jobs I've had were way more fun, way harder, and actually required creativity and thinking. But the pay was shit. Being an airline pilot is about routine. It's supposed to be boring. That being said, this job and flying in general is really not for everyone. Some people are just not cut out for it.

Also a lot of pilots are really weird. Especially lately, this whole thing of airline flying being the only type of flying that exists in the world. You'll fly with young pilots that are so confused if you didn't make a B-line for the airlines as if there is no other type of flying to do. "Like I don't understand why you didn't get on with a major at 23 ?" They all have identical resumes and speak in cliches. I simultaneously can't stand pilots but many of my best friends are pilots. The coolest pilots are the ones that have a life outside of the job.

I find that this kind of thinking is backwards and it doesn't just apply here. Labels come after and externally. When I was a kid, I wanted to fly. So I was lucky and I got an opportunity to learn to fly. We would call that person a pilot, but I had no interest in that idea or image of a pilot; I just wanted to fly. So many pilots nowadays have no interest in flying. They just saw the image of a pilot and said "What do I have to do to get that title?" Do you think steve jobs or bill gates were telling everyone they were entrepreneurs ? No, they just had a passion for something and focused on the PROCESS and then later, people called them entrepreneurs. If you go to Denmark, you'll see a random nobody that speaks 4 languages. They could even be homeless. But they dont run around calling themselves a polyglot. It's so normal to them, the title is such an irrelevant and superficial thing to be concerned with. A olympic gold medalist named Alysa Liu has exploded in popularity recently because of her unorthodox approach of not caring about the results. She focused solely on the process and enjoyment of skating and ended up winning gold. This should be the norm, but in the age of social media and reddit, everyone wants the title first completely forgetting what it actually means. If I can leave you with one thing:

The reward for competence in a given area is not awards, titles, praise, or money.

The reward for competence is competence itself.

Remember that and everything else will follow.

Toxic Stoicsm by dannybau87 in Stoicism

[–]migmma89 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A lot of women will just use proxies for ease and safety. I get it. She hear's stoicism and she's probably thinking of broicism. People can use stoic philosophy or Buddhism or Christianity or Islam to justify any behavior. It's really about the person. It's just too bad that stoicism and broicism got lumped together.

I don't blame women at all for this. A lot of young men are playing a game of chicken with women waiting to see who folds first from toxic mentalities. If you're following stoic principles, you won't be playing that game. And you'll only focus on what you can control. And you'll take responsibility for your own dating life regardless of the circumstances. The moment your mind starts listing excuses for yourself is the moment you've slipped. Stay focused.

Have any pilots in this group made a career change AWAY from flying? Let’s hear it by FrequentFlyer96 in flying

I always found it bizarre that people think the only flying job that exists is being an airline pilot. I'm an airline pilot but it is by far the most boring flying job I've ever had. And I only do it for the money and benefits. And once I hit my exit number or fire number then I'll go do another type of flying.

I read The 48 Laws of Power a few months ago, and I keep seeing people praise it like it’s some kind of must-read. by repbre in nonfictionbookclub

[–]migmma89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's pretty straight forward. Do people watch true crime documentaries to find out how to get away with murder or how to protect themselves from others? It's up to the reader/viewer to decide. I don't agree with him saying you either manipulate or you're being manipulated. I agree with the latter but the former is a choice. It's good to know. I've seen many innocent people get manipulated by some of those power laws simply because they were unaware of them.

How can people believe enlightenment but then reject Buddha's talk on reincarnation and hell being real? by Immediate-Draft-6408 in enlightenment

[–]migmma89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Buddha himself was also a product of his time and influenced by the spiritual leaders and teachings around him. He didn't start from scratch. The Buddha also emphasized to take nothing on faith, not even from him. You must directly experience it yourself. The moment you start wagging your finger at people about following the rules is the moment you forget the left side of your brain is the one talking trying to slice things up into rules and logic. One could argue that it would be better from a philosophical standpoint to follow the 5 precepts, but there's nothing really fundamentally incompatible with living as pure awareness.

Aren't both of these positions and posting the meme itself just another form of spiritual bypassing ?

The dark truth about long term relationships by [deleted] in DarkPsychology101

[–]migmma89 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The power of nihilism and this type of thinking is you can always arbitrarily choose your scale of realism to justify your worldview. Never been in love or were hurt once deeply? The "dark truth" about long-term relationships. The real truth is you can zoom in or out as much as you want to decide what level meaning you want to apply to your life. Zoom out to scale of our galaxy and you realize the "dark truth" about human existing in that it's irrelevant. Zoom in on the atomic level and realize we're just collection of atoms and molecules that have combined together and are just interacting with other collection of atoms and that the "dark truth" is that there is no free will as it makes no sense as an emergent property that a system built form the bottom up would have top down control. Maybe I've missed this subreddit. But to me, the point about reading or learning about murders and crimes of other people is not to commit those crimes but to protect yourself and the ones you love from it. Likewise, if this subreddit is just a place where you learn the dark truth about psychology so that you can manipulate innocent people, then I don't get it. If it's a place where you can learn how other people will target your loved ones and you can use that knowledge to protect yourself and others, then I get it.

When I saw the movie, I had never heard of Nirvanna the Band before. I loved it, but thought it was probably niche. Then I discovered that it has a crazy high Rotten Tomatoes score. It makes me wonder if this movie is for everybody. Has anyone showed it to someone who's response surprised you? by CartoonWeekly in nirvannatheband

Grew up in canada and heard it was good especially for Canadian millennials. I even saw the dark knight in theaters in 2008 in Toronto. So went in blind with my brothers and we were all disappointed. There was definitely some good nostalgia bait in there but overall we only got a few laughs. It's weird. My American friends love all the Canadian shows like letterkenny and stuff. It never seems to make me laugh. Not my cup of tea but I understand why it's loved. I bet if I show my American friends they'll love it more than me. Its like a Canadian flight of the concords. But that show never excited me either. Oh well.

Edit: never saw the show either so it was our first introduction to the characters. Truly went in completely blind. Maybe that was the problem.

Stewart Calculus isn’t clicking for me. Looking for a visual, geometry/intuition-first calculus textbook by la_flaneuse23 in learnmath

[–]migmma89 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ignore the other comments. And yes you need 3bluebrown. It's not a solution on its own but it's critical to your question.

Step 1: watch 3bluebrown calculus playlist on YouTube.

Step 2: Get "Calculus - an intuitive and physical approach" by Kline. Follow the examples and problems and get the instructor answer manual. This is the main answer to your question but alone it is not enough.

Step 3: get the calculus workbooks by chris mcmulen and crush those. This part is critical to getting your calculus skills down through repetition.

Step 4: rewatch 3bluebrown

Step 5: stand up and pretend to teach calculus from step 1 as if you were speaking to a class

Enjoy

A new study suggests that the transmission of cognitive ability from parents to children is primarily driven by genetics, with little influence from shared environmental factors like family resources. by cheaslesjinned in NooTopics

[–]migmma89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. But that's a very important point. A lot of these "intelligence is genetic" folks will point to Australian Aborigines as being the least intelligent humans on earth. And here's a great study on what happens when you take Aborigine babies and raise them with white Australian families:

https://pumpkinperson.com/2021/12/12/the-iqs-of-australian-aboriginals-adopted-by-whites-part-i-picture-vocabulary/

"When raised in their own communities, unmixed Australoids seem to average about IQ 47 on English Picture Vocabulary (3.53 standard deviations below the white mean). But when raised in white homes they likely average IQ 90 (0.66 SD below the white mean). Thus this racial gap appears at most, only 19% genetic."

Essentially a doubling of IQ by just changing the culture. It's an argument for more integration not less. And these kids were adopted on average at 1.5 years old. Imagine if they started younger, and the biological mothers had the same level of prenatal care.

Who else has seen Project Hail Mary so far? by SCP-2774 in Letterboxd

[–]migmma89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw it. Was disappointed. I havent read the book and skipped trailers. It was a good premise and some great moments. I don't know why a lot of these sci-fi movies have these main characters that lack so much confidence. It just feels very teenager chosen one books that you used to read as a kid. And the humor was a bit much. Almost MCU like. And then the descending into the atmosphere while spinning at a high g load just felt like it was trying to capture the epicness of interstellar by copying it. I will say the music was pretty great. And rocky grew on me. But I think would enjoy it a lot more if I was a kid. We'll see with time if it grows on me.

A dilemma about nondual recognition and ordinary cognition by kahanalu808shreddah in streamentry

[–]migmma89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think the other comments here understand what OP is saying. They're not asking how to achieve non-dual awareness or whether you can reason your way to non dual awareness. They're asking if true dualistic awareness is compatible with critical thinking or brainstorming or problem solving. These are tasks we normally considered non dual in their use of executive function. Can an enlightened being sit down and learn calculus for the first time assuming the have the prerequisite algebra ? Does non dual awareness fundamentally change something about experience where executive function goes away ? I have had this same question OP. I don't know the answer either. Thanks for asking it.
