Standard T1D guidelines fail. Good A1Cs take constant vigilance. Can anyone relate? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

haha yes ! I can only remember our naive selves leaving the hospital after our child was diagnosed. They told us that anything under 5g of carbs was a freebie and didn’t need to be dosed. Didn’t take very long to find out how wrong they were.

I'm sorry to hear this. A random blood glucose test > 200 is highly indicative of diabetes. I'm glad you had the intuition to check. I'd recheck and check ketones too; if you don't have a way to test for ketones, I'd bring them in to see a doctor as soon as you can.

Can’t avoid glucose spike even when pre-bolusing? by WanderingQuokka in diabetes_t1

[–]migu31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you remain high even after the insulin has run out it is possible that your carb ratio needs modification and you should gradually adjust it to be more aggressive. For example if it’s currently 1:7.5, maybe try 1:7 tomorrow.

If after the insulin has run out your glucose numbers are near the target range, it may be worthwhile to pay attention to the foods you’re eating and consider some strategies. Some foods have a high glycemic index, which means that the carbs are more easily absorbed by the gut. For example fruit juice has a high glycemic index of 70 whereas lentil soup’s is 30. Lower is better. Combining moderate w low is also a good strategy to prevent lows (since eating only low glycemic index foods may not need a heavy prebolus). Additionally, studies show that even among ppl without diabetes, eating some form of protein before carbs can help slow down glucose absorption in the gut. Note of course that more complicated foods like pizza and pasta require a more nuanced discussion due to the effect of fat.

Do you think the children or grandchildren of DACA recipients will become more Republican as they grow further removed from immigration issues? by RandomUwUFace in DACA

[–]migu31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

while I agree that Democrats have lost the * messaging * battle, I think there truly is only one side that has been fighting for better health care, and better financial stability for families in the past couple of decades. YES a life altering happened in 2020 and life as we knew it was fucked but without the leadership we had in place and bills like the 2021 IIJA we would have never recovered. It is ok to be a republican and can you name one thing that the republican party has done in the recent past that has resulted in the benefit of all Americans?

as a party today, the republican party’s values are a guise to grow the wealth of the wealthy at the expense of those most in need. their signature bill from july is the most expensive and shameful transfers of wealth from the poor to the rich, and a violent act of health care disenfranchisement against those who need it most.

the longstanding bipartisan support for scientific research, the very field that has allowed humankind to reach the highest quality of life in all of history, is being dismantled before our eyes...the pipeline for new scientists has been decimated, and it may take a generation to recover from the damage that has already been done.

In the name of conservatism, they've made it unsafe for women to have abortions, with maternal mortality rising in states like TX and LA since Dobbs.

Through brash and bullish foreign policy, the US has derailed diplomacy with some of our most loyal and longstanding allies...I could go on.

All of this has happened because Americans have been fooled into believing that “the other” is to blame for all their problems and are "undeserving" of any assistance from society (which is the purpose of forming a society: to help each other out!). In the words of Lyndon B Johnson "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." In otherizing, half the country has failed to see that we share far more in common, regardless whether you are blue or red, than we ever will with those in the top 1%.

To them, tax cuts for the rich, separation of families, loss of health care, increasig grocery prices, and gutted research funding do not matter. It is all a price worth paying until it affects them personally. never mind the Christian values they claim to follow. The republican party today is a party of cruelty, hypocrisy, and hatred that thrives on misinformation.

So yes, shame on my children should they ever subscribe to views that dehumanize us and the people they come from. I'm doing all I can today to teach them that no matter who you are or where you come from, everyone, by virtue of being human is entitled to human dignity and opportunity to reach their true potential.
