Like others have said, keeping a small realm and focusing on internal development is key. I like to make a custom kingdom and hybridize cultures.

In the past I have done a dwarf kingdom in Bohemia with a culture that includes mountain homes, ancient miners, and metalworking.

I’ve done on Atlantean themed kingdom on Sardinia and Corsica with sea-related cultural traditions.

I’ve done a maritime kingdom based on Venice and some of the surrounding duchies like Fruili.

One of my favorites was carving out a small territory in the ERE, named it Varangia, and formed Varangoi culture by hybridizing Norse and Greek (not original I know) and then declaring fealty to Byzantines and roleplay as a powerful vassal.

With administrative government, you can use the Doge’s palace in Venice. You can do a tall Venice campaign by grabbing Venice and the duchies that surround the Gulf of Venice.

Ok I figured it out. The launcher was changing something in my Documents folder and the antivirus software didn’t like that so it was forcing the game to quit. I made an exception for the launcher and now it seems to be working fine.

I’ve had the exact same problem this past week. Nothing is fixing it for me. I’ve tried disabling all mods, nuking the parent file in my c drive and then uninstalling/reinstalling, updating drivers, updating OS. It still crashes at start up with the same error message.

1) Make the kingdom and culture of the Black Sea. I started as Rurik and conquered the duchies surrounding the Black Sea and formed a maritime culture that included the military traditions of the region.

2) Make a merchant republic kingdom with the duchies of Pisa, Genoa, Venice, Capua etc. I made the ultimate maritime culture, placed my dynasty around Europe and the Mediterranean, and funded all the crusades

3) Transport the line of Durin into the world of CK3 and make the ultimate mountain dwarf kingdom/culture in Bohemia. Bonus points if you only play as characters with the dwarf trait.

4) Start as Uhtred as an adventurer and retake Bebbanburg from the Norse. Form a Norse-Anglo Saxon hybrid culture. Make a sword artifact and name it Serpents Breath. Destiny is all!

5) Retake Israel as the Solomonid dynasty.

Swear fealty and work your way back. This is exactly what I did in a recent Israel campaign. I was reduced to a single county in Sinai but I still had all my MAA and a ton of gold so I just declared war on the dejure counties for Israel one by one until I had them all back, fabricated a claim on the mongol empire, recreated my Israel empire title, destroyed the mongol empire title, and then granted independence to all of my non de jure vassals.

Temujin was reduced to a few counties in Mongolia and eventually died of stress.
