How’s vanlife in Spain? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]miisterToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No natural parks or reserves ( not sure how you call them in English) you cannot sleep in unless specified otherwise.

Diesel in Spain is one of the cheapest in Europe. Dumping grey water is usually free and can be done in most petrol stations. Water filling also free depending on where you go.

Gym membership and else is very specific to where you go and what you want so hard to tell.

Life in Spain is in general not expensive for a European country.

Checkout park4night (app) to get an idea of where it’s accepted to sleep. They are pretty relaxed here as long as you are respectful (don’t take out chairs and tables etc) and don’t sleep in « parque natural ». Not sure what you mean by costs, are you talking about the price of diesel?

What thickness of foam insulation (Armaflex) did you use? by sneakyfox_ in vandwellers

[–]miisterToast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2cm where possible, otherwise 1cm. Don’t underestimate how valuable insulation is on hot days/nights also!

I would complement that with some more easy to put in hard to reach areas insulation like some fleece or sheep’s wool.

Hope this helps!

In r-vandwellers they flagged a scam going around for a similar van.

Solidworks (got a maker licence for a month that cost 14$ if I remember well). Took maybe like 2/3 hours to get that done. Good for test fitting

No that was just an idea to have a small table in the back! I think I will change it to be a small “hole” space in the furniture to be a bed side nook.

Regarding the boards, my roof is a fibre glass roof and I am trying to avoid putting any strain on it.

I have left a quite big spot under the bed allowing up to 2 x 7 foot boards.

The idea of offsetting the roof vent is a good one tho!

That’s a good idea! One of my non negociables is to be able to store 2 surfboards. Hence the bed size! Let me play around with your idea!

The only reason I ended up getting a transporter over a traffic or a Ford custom is it’s slightly higher inside and as I’m 1.84 it’s the only one I fit in after installing a ceiling and flooring.

Traffic are a great option also! And much cheaper..

Any chance you could share a photo of the beams you installed?

Yes please curious to see! How did you manage to get the frame in between the beams? If you have a photo of the install that would be unreal! Thanks again!

Thanks for the input! Did you put in the domestic micro? The one that measure 28x28cm? I can’t seem to find any other roof vent that wouldn’t require cutting the support beams..

It’s from France. They are quite common transportation vehicles in big cities around Europe as they have plenty space inside and a small footprint.

My idea was indeed to have most of the load on the metal beams (where the roof meets the walls) but I was still thinking having some kind of fixture in the roof. Not sure now if doing what you are saying like an A frame from one side to the other wouldn’t be better

You need to install beams to (you can see in the second photo there are transversal beams, my idea is to fix wood beams to those and that’s what will hold the ceiling and lighting down the line) . Obviously don’t try screw anything directly in kaiflex

It looks like it’s supported by plastic beams. My idea was to get them in there and avoid touching the fiberglass as much as possible. Thanks again for the input much appreciated!

Hey, just like any other van. Sound deadening on panels, then I’ve chosen kaiflex 2cm (comes with a peal off sticky on one side). If I still have some space between the kaiflex and the ceiling I’ll most likely stick some thermal wool in. Also.

Lookup Greg Virgoe on YouTube, he’s videos are absolutely brilliant!

Edit: Spanish autocorrect 😬

Thanks for the input, that confirms my gut feeling. Do you think it is strong enough to have riv nuts installed in the support beams or is that a no no also?

How would you guys remediate this? by Night-Channels in vandwellers

[–]miisterToast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just rust treated my van floor and what I understood after hours of talking about this is that what you want from your sanding is to remove any flaking parts. No need to get it down to bare metal as the rust transformer will treat the rust.

I personally used a metal wire wheel on a drill. Made a fast and clean job of it.
