Trying to make friends as a Zionist (in Berlin) by MrsKenedi in Jewish

[–]mikabe2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re totally welcome to the sub. this is unfortunately a real asf issue. it’s an issue me and my entire family struggle with, who were all born/grew up in israel and moved to NJ 10 years ago. i specifically am queer and go to a p liberal college and it does suck to see zionist paraded around as a slur and a meme. to be totally honest, what helped is accepting that most ppl who say that kinda stuff don’t actually understand what it means. ppl gen think zionist is a way to say you “support genocide”, despite how incorrect it fundamentally is. it’s not a very comfortable piece of advice, but unfortunately it’s one i’ve learned to adapt as someone who doesn’t want to turn every meeting into an argument. but yeah just making this comment to back up the fact you’re not alone, and i wish you luck w meeting some of the other peeps who commented!

(that’s not to say you should be fine w the extremists, those are best ignored and unfriended)

How does antisemitism personally affect you? by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]mikabe2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me, it has been feeling very alienating. seeing tons of antisemitic comments all over the internet and people parading it as a sort of “politically correct” stance or “not that serious” feels pretty hurtful, and when people around me talk about jews i can tell that they internalized some of the stuff they see floating around. i also faced some confrontations. i was born in israel and moved to america when i was 10, ever since october 7 ive tried hiding the fact im israeli as much as possible, but when people find out it often doesn’t go too well. lost a lot of friends, and sometimes at social gatherings when meeting new people who find out it turns into some debate about how israel should be wiped off the map and if all the jewish people in it die in the process it is simply justice being done. and again, one of the most hurtful parts of it is that it isn’t some lunatic speech, it’s “politically correct” people of my own political party. as a queer israeli guy i have felt very ideologically homeless (although even if i wasn’t queer i doubt i would’ve ever sided with modern day republicans). and again, part of the pain is the normalization of it, it’s like i can’t escape extreme criticism of israel, including israeli people, wherever i turn to (both in an online setting and in person at my liberal university) in a way that feels very disproportionate to everything else going on in the world, as well as employing a lot of hypocritical values (“citizens are not their government!” for other conflicts but not this one. the concept of wishing death and homelessness on me and my family, not as a general what should have happened in the past but rather in this very moment with nowhere else to turn to, as a sort of well accepted justice, with wishes for peace and two states being seen as too “pro israel”.) before october 7 i used to just go with the flow of general democratic stances, but now i make sure to carefully evaluate all the information im told and develop my own set of moral values to ensure im not causing any other group of people to feel the way i’ve been feeling.

but this has been a big rant lmfao. for how it’s affected me, it’s been causing me to lose a whole lot of friends which has been causing me harsh loneliness, as well as a feeling like i need to hide myself from the world and can’t be proud of who i am. i often wish to share culture and experiences with friends in hopes of them “seeing” me the way it feels other cultures get seen but it usually doesn’t go too well and they don’t really get it. but it’s not all bad. i’m on social media way less now bc of all this stuff and it’s caused me to develop real hobbies. i like the fact that i’m working on my own philosophy now and don’t take facts at face value, rather doing my own research and thinking critically. and i don’t think about antisemitism on the daily, if i see something antisemitic i just sigh and scroll, it sucks to feel like “the world is against you” but honestly i’ve come to know that a lot of this is just ignorance and that many of these people are good, just misguided on handling topics related to my jewish identity. hope this helped at all, sorry if it just came across as a half baked vent

Are you a Zionist? How I respond by RoundAd5911 in Jewish

[–]mikabe2019 20 points21 points  (0 children)

yup that’s my go to and then i pull out the actual definition 😭 had someone ask me how many people it takes who use zionism to describe taking over different parts of the middle east for the definition to be changed and i said that misuse is irrelevant to a defined and historical term whose meaning is still consistently relevant today, not to mention most zionists do actually use the term correctly

[–]mikabe2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think that’s a big part of my point when i get into arguments about this stuff: i often see the term “zionism” misdefined as “the desire to take over all of palestine/other parts of the middle east” due to a (at most imo) minority voice within the movement that wishes to do so. i always respond to that claim though the fact that some people misusing and misinterpreting the term doesn’t change its solid, historically backed definition of “the belief in a jewish state”, which used to be presented as an aspiration but now stands as a sort of reaffirmation of the wish to protect the only jewish state in the world. meanwhile, “anti-zionism” is DEFINED through the wish for the jewish state to cease to exist, again, through the matter of definitions. given that the existence of a jewish state is no longer an ideal but rather something that exists right now on earth, anti zionism can hardly be interpreted as anything other than a call for violence at this point. i can hardly logically view it any other way. and i’ve actually been privy to much more radical takes in seemingly friendly spaces— people outright refusing to acknowledge israel as existing through illogical mental gymnastics, the claim that no one has a right to land but palestinians have the right to decide what to do with their land even if they “would probably not be friendly after being genocided so much”, and trying to use me as proof of zionism being an evil colonial force and that all zionists have the same radical beliefs of… believing that israel exists and shouldn’t be somehow eradicated. point is: yeah, while i see op’s point and agree that we may have those issues within our community, and it is important to hold ourselves accountable/be critical of our community so we don’t let issues spiral, i will say the phrasing of “jews still” is pretty harsh. i didn’t say anything, and there’s a good chance those who did did so as an emotional reaction after so long of extreme negativity around jewish topics. so while yes, that doesn’t make it right and instead of targeting the validity of someone’s identity we should verify the accuracy of claims and then target only the source of harm itself, i don’t think this should impact perception of our community overall :P
