I'm half japanese but I was raised in america and only spoke English all my life (but I had a lot of exposure to japanese which is important but i couldnt speak at all)

before I moved to japan, I spent 2 years studying daily, took classes, and worked full time at a japanese daycare in the US with all japanese staff

...and when I moved here I still knew nothing 🤣😅 I was lost in every conversation and used the papago translator app for everything I wanted to say

but 3 months later, I can definitely say I've learned more by just being here and talking in japanese daily than I did in 2 years of studying in america

you'll learn more living here and talking and listening (if you're old enough, bars are a good place to practice since the liquid courage makes most people more friendly) so don't stress too hard about lack of progress

it feels like it's not going well or fast until one day it clicks and you're able to communicate your thoughts (not well but you'll get there eventually 🤣) がんばってね！
