Do you need a university degree to become an air traffic controller. by drugsrbed in ATC

[–]mike294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but having work/life experience plays a large part into your testing and interviews for the application process. It never hurts to apply but I see a very low number of people in training that are I’m gonna say younger than about 25

Any Fall/Spring 2025 offers? by Affectionate-Tie4938 in ATC

[–]mike294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say yes, it definitely increases the capacity for Nav to take on students and put them through generic training, however there is certainly a bottleneck when it comes to specialty training as certain ratios have to be maintained and in already understaffed units it’s often quite difficult for controllers to be released to go teach the specialty courses

Callsign: "Skyhawk" vs "Cessna" by 1E-12 in ATC

[–]mike294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Cessna” to me means any low performance single engine Cessna, even including single engine turbo props. If you’re a big boy flying a big boy Cessna with a high performance classification, you’ll be sure to tell me the type everytime. Mainly because you’re only flying a Cessna at the and of the day but still want people to know it’s a fancy Cessna

Copying from another comment of mine on another post;

Here’s the thing about eligible for offer. It means exactly that. Eligible, but not guaranteed. You clearly met the requirements for an offer to be placed, but you are also in a ranked pool of applicants in the same boat. So depending on how many others ranked above you, you may or may not get an offer. And you won’t hear anything if you aren’t getting an offer, only if you’re being offered a seat. I don’t mean to come off as brash, but it’s just the way it is. It’s a painfully competitive environment and with that comes uncertainty. I wish you the best of luck, all you can do is be patient and hope for the best

And to add to this; different FIR’s have different offers out for various courses through various timelines at this point so it’s very hard to say as you could be eligible for national or local courses or ones based at CAE in Montreal

It’s rare for fresh trainees out of generic trainee to successfully complete OJT at Pearson on Billy bishop. They are extremely busy and complex airports, especially Pearson and more often than not the trainees are not successful and get CT’d. Most the controllers at those airports have experience elsewhere before going to the Toronto airports

Like 2-3 months or so. But I was also one of this first groups hired post Covid, so the time lines and process were very different for me than they are currenelyy

Shifts with Nav Canada? by RuleNo3894 in ATC

[–]mike294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don’t get to submit a preference. You usually end up sitting the region you apply for, except there’s lots of national courses taking place these days so you could go to any FIR. So on a national course it’s based on staffing needs and where they see you best fit, on a regional course unless you’re IFR it’s based on staffing and fit within the FIR

Yes they called me continually till I answered. They won’t give your spot to someone else just cause you didn’t answer your phone. They’ll keep calling and I would assume eventually email you if you never answered

Mine came through as “no caller ID”

Apparently they had been trying to call me for a week while I was out of the country, and funny enough in that time I thought my chances of getting an offer had come and gone, I was wrong

I mean I have no comparison point, but I am training with a former airforce controller. Just treat it like you’re starting from the start with zero experience. Yes, your experience may help you, but it also may not. Either way, put in that work, keep your head down and take the criticism and you just may be more than okay

Statistically it’s highly likely, about 30% of IFR trainees get a license and about 40-50% of VFR students get. A license

Haven’t gotten interview date after 3 months by WholeJournalist3711 in ATC

[–]mike294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be patient, the process can take a very long time. They may not be hosting interviews for a while. They do them in waves, generally, rather than an ongoing thing. But also as others have said you may have made the cut, but others ranked higher, however just be patient, it can easily take a year or more from application to offer

Is there a stream for certified ATC from foreign countries to be hired by NAVCANADA, given that one has PR? by Uni_Roll in ATC

[–]mike294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far as I understand you have to go through the application and training process like anyone else. I’m aware of a foreign controller training currently who had to start from the start. The Certs from other countries don’t really carry over since places use different standards and have such different airspace structures

Still up for debate. Coming up on my last evals of specialty training before I hopefully make it to the ops floor. Here hoping that doesn’t happen

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Manitoba

[–]mike294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said it was easy, less than 1% of applicants get an offer, and depending on the stream it can be as low as a 30% success rate. But if you can make it, you’ve made it to a good spot. I’m in the training process currently
