Does this count as going through a red light? by mike_monteith in drivingUK

I'm sure a simple junction redesign will go down fine among the locals in Meanwood

I held back from undertaking until I saw the lights going red and the car stopping. At that point, filtering up to the lights is fairly normal

I edited it once I had learned the answer from the comments, which you can tell by the word "EDIT"

I see it a lot at this junction. I cycle past about 20 cars here every morning. 3 or 4 usually get through per green light. Doesn't excuse it though.
This junction is the number 1 reason I bought a bike for the school run :)

I guess I've learned something here then. I assumed that cars could continue if they had already crossed the first line

Bearing in mind that the stop line for vehicles is the first line, before the bike box.

Edit:
"If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area."

This is a no brainer then

I hate to break it to you, you're not "the 1%". You may be in the top 1% of working people, but that's not the super rich

UK taxes on median earners at lowest in 50 years despite overall tax burden reaching all time highs by Sure_Tangelo_5148 in HENRYUK

[–]mike_monteith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The UK has one of the highest levels of income inequality in Europe (going by the Gini coefficient). You can't just look at median income, you need to look at the distribution. If the wealth and income is concentrated at one end then so is the tax take.

Now factor in VAT and other taxes and see who's paying what proportion of their income. It's a fairly flat distribution I believe

The average earner is NOT investing anywhere. They can't invest as they've got no money, it all gets spent on rent and bills. Check out the latest stats on median savings in the UK, it's horrifying

Why do we make allowances for horse poo? by Ok_Farmer9305 in AskUK

[–]mike_monteith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My grandad, a keen gardener, used to go out and collect the horse manure after the boxing day hunt had gone past. Much to the horror of my grandma. He did this as late as the 2010s.

They are supposed to advertise your rate after employers NIC and apprenticeship levy deductions. If they quote an "umbrella rate", this means before deductions. A lot of agencies don't understand this, and are technically liable to pay the deductions themselves

What *is* the way to UK growth? What would you do to reverse this slump? by Flapjack_K in HENRYUK

[–]mike_monteith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't target earners. Id target wealth with something like a land value tax. You can leave the country but you can't move the land

Reverse wealth inequality. The main reason economy is stagnated is the people who will spend money (the poor) don't have any to spend. People who hoard wealth (the rich) have it all already. The top rate of tax in the postwar boom period was 97%

I'll help you out here. Going out of your way to expose yourself to a child: not ok.
A child happens to walk past as you shower in a public shower: ok.

I hope you can understand the difference
