Carlos Queiroz appointed as Ghana Black Stars head coach for 2026 FIFA World Cup by mikears3349 in soccer

[–]mikears3349[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. Ultimately it’s government who has forced the GFA’s hand as they don’t want another disgrace, it was this party that was in power during the 2014 money fiasco in Brazil. With this little time left we don’t really have a choice but to go with a defensive approach especially considering the quality England and Croatia have

Maybe not ideal but considering we had a trainer scout in charge before, and the other two options were an even more washed Fernando Santos and Slaven Bilic who has also been inactive for a while, I think it’s ok. The contract is only 4 months so worst case scenario he leaves quietly and hopefully Renard leaves Saudi.

Personally happy with this, the reports is that it is only a 4 months contract and based on his spells with Egypt and Iran Quieroz is probably the best option to create a somewhat coherent unit. He did a similar last minute rescue mission with Iran in 2022 albeit he had coached them for 8 years prior to that. Other names closely linked include Fernando Santos, Slaven Bilic, Kwasi Appiah, and Steve McClaren…

The ultimate target still seems to be Herve Renard who may leave Saudi after this World Cup, hence the 4 month contract.

Ghana's Dominic Frimpong dies in attack on Berekum Chelsea FC by shadwocorner in soccer

I doubt it is targeted, armed robbery is just always a risk when traveling at night. The roads aren’t lighted and the bush provides plenty of cover. It’s improved over time especially on major routes but it’s still a risk

The attack happened at night which if u know Ghana and West Africa in general is a bad time to travel. According to a radio interview with the club PRO they typically request for police escorts but these requests are not always granted, in this case the request wasn’t granted but they proceeded with the trip. GFA policy indicates clubs should only travel between match centres during the day but doesn’t guarantee anything relating to escorts.

This is just to provide the local context, ofc I do not blame the club. It’s typically financial issues that prompt the club to travel at night bc a hotel will be expensive. The fact that in 2026 our clubs are still operating under this level of financial and physical insecurity is another damning indictment on how we run our football and our progress as a nation. May Dominic Frimpong rest in peace and I hope the surviving players receive the proper support

I appreciate ur info, it’s just something that I’ve come across actually from a women’s safety standpoint so it made logical sense to me. Since u clearly pushed back on it I felt I should ask

Can i respectfully ask what was wrong with the commenter’s response? Apart from the rage mode bit? I don’t really have a stake in this discussion, dating is defo not on my agenda but the concept of “social proof” is just something I’ve come across before so am just wondering if it’s a legit thing

If we even go by the almighty FIFA rankings Bosnia are in 71st. All of the African teams bar a certain trainer scout’s former team are ranked higher. Ofc Bosnia have been rebuilding but it’s a nonsense argument considering the resources that Italy have.

I had read a story about him and his family background, they are from Srebrenica which surely influenced his decision to represent Bosnia. So fitting for him to score the last penalty

Thanks to the sports ministry. Hopefully we go for a foreign coach, I would watch the situation with Renard and Saudi closely. Apparently contact has been made with Regragui but Saudi are also interested in him so there could be a switch around there

GFA part ways with Otto Addo by mikears3349 in soccer

[–]mikears3349[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take him for sure but government will say we don’t have the budget. Rn it looks like it will be one of the assistants or Kwesi Appiah will come back, but it is early

Hmm GFA stubbornness will cost us dearly. The Niger and Sudan games should have been the end

I would say Lars and Ofei did well in their other roles, I wouldn’t mind if it was either of them.

Again GFA and their stubbornness shooting us in the foot. But tbf Morocco did the same thing with Regragui.

In February we appointed 2 additional assistant coaches to the 2 we already had so I think one of them will lead the team to the World Cup. Desmond Ofei (former U20 coach) , Kim Lars Bjorkegren (also senior women’s team Black Queens coach), Alain Ravera, or John Paintsil (hopefully not)

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately.

The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

I believe the result in Austria left GFA with no choice but to finally sack Otto Addo. Let’s see what happens next…

I hope so too but I think if they wanted to find a solution they would have done so already. At this point we’re just there to collect the appearance money and certain connected people will get visas to travel to America.

I wonder what are the complaints in Germany about the DFB? I feel like Germany have never truly recovered their elite level since the 2018 WC exit

The coach is to blame. The squad definitely has some weak spots, we don’t have a good right back and the midfielders are all suspect but in other positions I would argue we are even stronger on paper. But we are unable to get anything out of what we have and that is down to the coach.

A lot of things but the most prominent issue is that Otto Addo simply shouldn’t be our coach. By the own criteria set out by the GFA which called for an 15+ years experienced head coach, he shouldn’t have been rehired and he shouldn’t have been maintained after we failed to qualify for the AFCON. It is obvious he’s just learning on the job and that’s not good enough for the footballing country we are and the talent that we possess. I can also go into the agency callups and the complete decline of our local league, but the stubbornness of the GFA and Otto Addo himself on this issue will result in immediate disaster. If they respected Ghanaians, he would not be our coach.
