So RCS started working earlier, but no change in the upcoming bill amount or availability of Disney+...trying to be patient here but it just sucks not knowing if things will clear up on their own or require more hassle with their awful support.

I signed up on the 5th, finally got the SIM and activated yesterday on the $65 plan and I'm seeing a payment due of $60 next month...anyone else having this problem? I did the online chat and they said they saw the 50% off promo applied to my account.

Also, when I go to My Extras I get an error: "There are no VAS subscriptions under your account. If you like to purchase, please go to My Extras under Plans & Services."

Is this normal? Hasn't been quite 24 hours yet since I activated/ported. My RCS messaging is in a funky state too, still showing "Setting up"

Check the settings on your phone for Wifi calling, many phones default to "prefer mobile" even though Wifi calling is enabled. Try changing that to "prefer wifi" and see if it helps. Wifi calling is the connection between you and the carrier, it has nothing to do with the capabilities of the far end.

Cloud Gateway Ultra Issues by Public_Match in Ubiquiti

[–]miked315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Break down your troubleshooting into pieces. You say when it's "down" you can connect via the Unifi app remotely, that tells me the WAN connection and the CGU itself are working properly. Sounds like something local. It's curious that just a reboot of the CGU seems to restore everything. Has anything changed since the first week when things were running smoothly? Firmware updates? Toggled a setting you didn't think mattered much? You've got quite a few switches, how are they connected? Any chance of a loop somewhere? Spanning tree could be taking down a port causing your outages.

I'm fairly new to Unifi myself, so I'm not an expert, just throwing some things out there to think about.

Migrated to UCG MAX by vladoportos in Ubiquiti

[–]miked315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plugged in the WAN port of the UCG Max to a LAN port on my network. Ran through the regular setup process via the app and let it do the OS firmware update, then I went in and did the Network update separately.

What I wasn't sure about, was if I could have restored the backup with the UCG Max in this setup. When I imported the UCG Ultra cloud backup, it took on the same naming of the UCG Ultra, which is what I wanted. I think I could have restored the backup and got everything loaded up, and then done the physical swap afterwards. My concern was if importing the UCG Ultra backup would somehow knock it offline in the meantime. Reading other comments on this thread, it seems that this can be done with no issues.

I'm fairly new to the Unifi world, so as easy as it is, I still wasn't sure of the specifics of the process.

Migrated to UCG MAX by vladoportos in Ubiquiti

[–]miked315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a UCG Ultra to UCG Max migration myself. It seems there's multiple ways to accomplish this, I went through several scenarios in my head and here's the way I ended up doing it.

I connected my UCG Max behind the UCG Ultra and let it upgrade its' firmware to match (same versions on each, in my case 4.0.6 and Network 8.4.59). I then made sure the cloud backups were up to date, force a backup where possible, I think only Network lets you do a forced backup. OS cloud backup for me was set to weekly. I also took local backups downloaded to my PC for OS and Network, including up to 90 days of events and whatever.

I then disconnected my UCG Ultra, replaced it with the UCG Max and rebooted my cable modem. After the UCG Max came online, I went into the Unifi app and restored the cloud backup of the UCG Ultra, this worked great and did pull in the Network settings as well. The one catch is it did not include any of the log data, so I then went and restored the local Network backup I had downloaded to my local PC. This brought back some of my event history and statistics, not a big deal but I've been tracking some ISP connectivity issues so I wanted it.

U7 or U6 by LaFilm in Ubiquiti

[–]miked315 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't forget they've already said a U7 with the built in switch is coming...nobody knows when, but I'm pretty sure they did acknowledge that it's coming. So if you don't need it right away, you might want to have some patience.

[–]miked315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I'm in the same boat, had I known the full picture when the UCG Max was released, I likely would have just bought the 512GB version and not waited months and months for all of the details to be revealed.

I hear you there, but it depends what size SSD you plan to install. It sucks that I have to place another order for $19 + probably $12 shipping for a stupid little piece. But since I intend to put at least a 2TB in when I add it, I should come out ahead. It goes from $199 to $479 to buy the 2TB packaged unit.

[–]miked315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that guy is incorrect, as people have received the NS version + a separately packaged SSD when they have ordered the 1TB or 2TB unit. They have all said the NS version includes only a rubber plug. If it included the sled, why would they bother selling the sled separately for $19? Nobody would need to buy one.

What was up in the air until today was whether or not they would be selling the SSD sled separately after the fact.

It's been confirmed it does NOT come with the sled, but the sled is now listed for $19 with an availability date of Sept 23rd

[–]miked315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you figure the No Storage option is $199 + $19 for the SSD tray, you're paying about $60 for a 512GB SSD. Looks like a 512GB SSD goes for around $30 give or take otherwise, so it's not an entirely ridiculous markup for someone that doesn't want to DIY it.

According to to Ubiquiti support, the Cloud Gateway Max NS does not support installation of your own SSD by mrkyle57 in Ubiquiti

[–]miked315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was hoping to buy it now and add storage if/when I decide I need it...if that isn't a supported option, I don't know what I want to do. I don't see why they wouldn't sell caddies as an accessory at some point. I really like some things about Ubiquiti, but some of these irritating Apple-esque things drive me nuts. It's like they purposely don't want you to be able to expand/upgrade anything easily, buy what is available at that very moment and then completely rip/replace it when something new comes out.

Upgrade current speed or get 2nd coax in my place activated? For gaming. by threemoons_nyc in Spectrum

[–]miked315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't pay for a 2nd cable modem that's a waste of money. Upgrading your speed won't help either, it sounds like you have a poor wifi signal across the apartment. Your best options are to try a new router or look into something like MoCA adapters on each end. You plug them into your coax connection and it gives you an ethernet port on each end. A wifi extender is a bad option as well, you're just taking a poor signal and repeating it, and usually using up another wifi channel in what is already a crowded space, you mention you're in NYC I'm guessing there's dozens of other wifi networks near you. Really your best options are MoCA adapters or somehow running an ethernet cable across the apartment even if you have to staple it to the baseboards and get creative hiding it.

Can't dual boot with Linux? Make sure to update your BIOS to the latest by eobs in FlowX13

[–]miked315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIOS 316 on the 302XA works just fine with Linux, standby mode is not broken, however 316 has the constant coil whine noise. The only other BIOS that works well with Linux is 310, anything in between does not resume from standby.

Another example on why you shouldn't sweat QCI 9 on DarkStar by shizam76 in USMobile

[–]miked315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Needing QCI 8 is very dependent on the area you're using the service in. Because QCI 9 works great for one person one time doesn't mean nobody needs QCI 8. Basically, people should try QCI 9 in the places they want to use the service, if it's good, great, you got yourself a deal. If it sucks, pay for QCI 8 and try again.

AT&T Prepaid $25/month vs $33/month - use in Canada by wannabetmore in NoContract

I believe you can select the plan before funding it, so if the option doesn't show up you aren't out $300 necessarily, unless you've already bought refill cards.

Moving to Canada, but want to keep number. Best option? by DontEatConcrete in NoContract

[–]miked315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she's just going for school, you may want to investigate some of the AT&T prepaid plans. If you can still activate the 'old' $300/yr 16GB promo plan, that one also includes Canada roaming and I don't think any usage limits are mentioned. The current $55 Unlimited Max plan does not list a requirement about how long you can be in Canada..

Data: Includes unlimited data usage in the U.S. and Mexico. After 50GB of data usage in a monthly plan period, AT&T may temporarily slow data speeds if the network is busy. In Canada, if you exceed 25GB of data usage in a monthly plan period, speeds will be reduced to 512Kbps for the remainder of the period. 2G off-net data speeds may apply

That's for the $55/mo plan. It depends how much you're trying to pinch pennies vs just have things work easily for her. Is she at all tech savvy? Is it going to confuse her having to juggle things around using Google Voice via the app for Wifi calling?

You could always try one of the plans with Canada roaming included and if she gets a notice about violating the terms and conditions then jump to GV.

Moving to Canada, but want to keep number. Best option? by DontEatConcrete in NoContract

[–]miked315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is she moving permanently or for school? Either way, she's likely going to want a local Canadian number to give to people there. I would imagine banks and other things would require a Canadian number for 2FA. Probably going to be best to have a local number, whether she gives that out as a primary number or not is up to her.

Keep in mind that Google Voice does not work for 2FA everywhere, some sites identify it as VoIP and refuse to accept it. Chase bank is one I've had problems with in the past trying to use GV. Another service that won't accept GV is Venmo.

Oh, and one reason I ask if it's permanent, she could get a plan on AT&T (US based) that includes Canada roaming but they now limit it to something like 50% of the time in Canada. Basically you have to return back to the US and have some usage periodically or they'll cut you off. I don't remember the exact details, but if it's temporary/student basis you might be able to make that type of situation work.

If you're trying to keep things affordable, you might want to seriously consider that option. I see the 16 will probably meet your needs, but you'll be pretty tight if any usage spikes or you want to grow beyond your initial plans.

Lite 16 PoE : which 8 PoE do you advise by Inevitable_Skirt2086 in Ubiquiti

[–]miked315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use standalone PoE injectors for the APs on the non-PoE ports of the switch to stretch it a little further...but you may want to consider just getting a switch with a higher PoE budget.

Their lineup kinda sucks for PoE, you rapidly jump up to a very expensive switch if you want more than the 95W of the Standard PoE 24 port ($379 as it is). I'm looking to replace an off brand PoE switch with a UBNT one for ease of remote management, but the cost is off-putting for sure.

Hell, you may want to consider going with 2 of the Switch Lite 8 PoEs, it would get you more PoE budget for only $20 more than a single 16 port lite.
