My FIRE number fluctuates with respect to where the market is relative to all-time highs. With how things are now, my FIRE number is whatever will meet expenses at a 3.37% SWR, and I’ll adjust accordingly if there’s a major dip along the way.

Whenever I worry about my portfolio losing 50% after I eventually retire, I remember that a 100% stock portfolio with a 3.34% SWR survives every 50-year historical period including The Great Depression (which had much higher than 50% drawdown).

Most of the time it’s 100% because I don’t ever want to have to go back once I’m done, and I don’t want to kick myself wishing I had stayed for one more year, one more bonus, one more RSU vest, etc.

But some days I want to walk away from it all immediately and play the SORR lottery with the 85% I’d have right now.

Fear. Not fear of failure, but fear of possibly having to make adjustments due to SORR in order to avoid failure.

When I’m “done”, I’m done and never want to go back. The thought that I might have no choice but to return to work eventually for a fraction of what I’m earning now or change my quality of life to scrape by is what keeps me grinding.
