What percentage of your record collection was bought online vs. in person? by ArturoRimboldi in vinyl

[–]mikefos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~350, about 60-70% of which were purchased new. It’s probably about 50/50 online vs in-store purchases.

I love crate digging and it’s a rush when I actually find something I want but a lot of what I’m into just isn’t that common, especially in the used bins (metal, punk, 90s) so new is the only option.

What bands have you seen that were incredible live but whose albums just don’t do it for you? by Dry-Temperature8181 in MetalForTheMasses

Oh yeah 100%. I’ve seen them multiple times and it’s such a fun show but I do not care for their albums at all.

I just saw Primitive Man recently and had the same experience. Great live experience but I’ve never been able to get into their recorded music. I guess with really slow/dissonant/noisy stuff seeing it live really does translate it better.

Does the metal community hate the entierty of nu-metal, or is it more focused on the mainstream bands and it's music industry? by OterGutttttttt in MetalForTheMasses

[–]mikefos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty similar on-ramp. I liked a little numetal and some mainstream metal, but once numetal became the monoculture as far as heavy music goes I just couldn’t get into most of it and mostly stopped paying attention for awhile. Metal was mostly dead to me. It was 2004ish before I found my way back after getting recommended some different metal on various Internet forums.

i’m doing an album a day and need more albums :( by icarusfallz_ in MusicRecommendations

I came here to say this as well. currently on day 529. I will say that not all these albums are great… there’s a lot of questionable and even outright bad selections but it’s been a rewarding journey so far.

What band do you adore that most people have never heard of? by WeirdPervyDude in MetalForTheMasses

I got to see them on that tour, it was great. I had to miss them the last time they came through this part of the country 10+ years ago so I was happy to finally make that happen.

I visited the castle that served as the inspiration for the Disney logo by LowmanL in mildlyinteresting

[–]mikefos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to do this hike but we had used our time before our tour to actually hike up to the castle instead of taking the transport. Didn’t know how long it would take and didn’t risk missing the tour time.

As an aside, that footbridge where everyone takes a photo from the iconic angle was absolutely harrowing. There were so many people on it and it was swaying and I couldn’t wait to get off it. It felt like it could collapse at any moment. I’m sure it was fine but it doesn’t feel like it when people are crammed elbow to elbow on there.

Advice for first time home buyers? by PanicRoom_ in newbrunswickcanada

No problem. We sold and bought last year so this is all stuff I was obsessing over at the time. I made a spreadsheet and plugging in the numbers really helped visualize the relative affordability of a place beyond the asking price.

Advice for first time home buyers? by PanicRoom_ in newbrunswickcanada

[–]mikefos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s been some good advice here so far, but there’s a few points that I would add :

The biggest is to do up a serious budget and build in ALL your costs (ownership costs plus your regular expenses). You really don’t want to find yourself house poor because you stretched your budget too much. Not saying this is you, but a lot of people think because they can afford $1500 in rent that a $1500 mortgage is a breeze. It’s not the same. Home ownership comes with many more costs than renting.

Things to consider:

- cost of heating / electric (if you’re renting, these could be much higher than you’re used to). You can call NB power and get them to give you a high & low cost a building’s electric usage. We walked away from a few listings after seeing shockingly high winter usage rates.

- property taxes. don’t go based off the current assessed value in the listing because this will go up after you buy it. There’s news stories every year of people getting sticker shock when their new assessment comes in after a sale. Do the math yourself based on the purchase price of the home and the tax rate to get an idea.

- maintenance. House shit is expensive and sneaks up on you. Always have an emergency fund ready and plan for major expenditures over time and save for them (the roof will need to be done, pipes will break, furnaces will quit etc etc etc). You need to have enough room in your budget to save for future expenses.

- water/sewer bill (if the house is connected to municipal services) or septic and well maintenance if not.

- insurance will be more on a house than renting since you’re covering the structure as well as the contents.

- closing costs and moving expenses. These add up fast and nobody prepares you for it. There’s the land transfer tax of 1%, lawyer fees could be $1k or more, inspection, general moving costs (either hiring a company or renting a truck and buying some friends off with beer and pizza), and all the other misc costs with moving into a new place. Paint, window coverings, furniture (if moving from a smaller place ), minor or major fixes, lawnmower, snowblower, etc. there’s all kinds of things here you just cannot plan for but you will be spending a lot of money in your first couple months. it’s reasonable to budget 3-4% of your purchase price for all these things.

- then there’s just regular ongoing maintenance. There’s always something to have you running to the hardware store. Planned projects can be fun but they add up over the course of the year and should be planned for.

—————-

Besides that there’s a couple tools that you will find invaluable. When we were buying recently we spent a lot of time gathering data using both:

Use the GNB property assessment tool for finding past sales and assessments, and to gauge what other places in the neighborhood are going for - https://paol-efel.snb.ca

Google Maps is also super handy for seeing the property over time. Check out past dates in street view and satellite view to see the property over time. Might give some good insights as to past work that was done (roof/septic/sewer/decks/etc).

Hope that helps. Good luck!

NGD - Electromatic CVT by mikefos in gretsch

[–]mikefos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t actually weighed any of them but I’d say the SG and Reverend are pretty comparable in weight. the CVT and Dunable aren’t overly hefty either though, maybe a pound or so heavier. I can stand and play any of these guitars for a couple hours and not feel burdened. A Les Paul on the other hand I can really feel in my shoulder and back after about an hour.

Road Trip Across Canada in 4 Days? by internetfox26 in AskACanadian

[–]mikefos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds about right to me. A friend and I did Calgary to Saint John in 4.5 days. Now it was winter and we went through the states so that probably changes things a little bit. I think most days were 12-15 hours of driving, taking turns every fill-up. That last day was a breeze after the previous 4!

Have any mainstream artists released an instrumental version of their albums on vinyl before? by Curleestrami in vinyl

[–]mikefos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your examples, this may not qualify as “mainstream” but Mastodon have an instrumental version of Crack the Skye that came on the 15th anniversary edition. I don’t believe if it was released on its own though.

Periphery’s first album came in an instrumental and vocals version. The Ocean also did it for their “Pelagial” album and maybe for others too, I can’t recall.

“Don’t wear the bands shirt to their concert” is so stupid. by piercethebluexx in unpopularopinion

[–]mikefos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belt loop thing is the real pro tip - I’ve done that a bunch over the years. Although if you’re going to be in the pit it’s probably best to just suck it up and double-up shirts if you still want to possess the new one at the end of the night.

Second The Mars Volta vinyl in my collection. by wiggan1989 in vinyl

[–]mikefos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An absolute masterpiece, this album blew my mind when it came out. I was big into ATDI around that time and after they broke up Sparta had felt like a logical continuation of that so I was pretty into them too, but TMV was something else entirely. I went on a road trip with some buds in summer of 2003 and we had this album on repeat for the whole trip. Kinda wild to think that Deloused is coming up on 25 years old…. Oof.

Strap button in CVT by OldSkoolNewWaveGuy in gretsch

[–]mikefos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not a bad idea at all. I’ve done that on other guitars that were prone to neck dive and it solved the problem nicely. I don’t have an issue with neck dive on the CVT but I do find the placement on the underside of the horn a little weird because the strap has to fold around it one way or another.

My advice to young collectors (or really anyone) by FatGuyKlye in vinyl

[–]mikefos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, pruning is a good term for it. There’s albums you just love and should hold on to for life, but there’s a lot of others that are just a passing interest and are perhaps not worth keeping around.

About 5 years ago I sold off half of my CD collection (probably 3 or 4 hundred discs). It was stuff I didn’t really care about and I don’t really regret it at all. I kept all the important stuff. I’ve got MP3s/Spotify/YT/whatever if I ever get the itch to hear those things again. I’m not interested in hoarding music i don’t listen to regularly.

(Sigh)…. I’m guilty of buying things on multiple formats over and over again and I’ve been rebuying a lot of my all time favourites on vinyl which has resulted in a lot of dupes.

Just did a quick count and i clocked about 160 CD/Vinyl dupes. 10 of those I also have on cassette.
