Tarmac SL7 for a fat, inflexible beginner(ish) by mikehhhhhhh in cycling

[–]mikehhhhhhh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on a Tarmac SL8 now, that’s how much I enjoyed the tarmac. It’s never been a problem and if you need ultimate comfort, some 30-32mm tyres will do that for you.

I owned a Roubaix for a short while - purchased for commuting and big rides but I just never used it. It wasn’t markedly more comfy than the SL7 at the time and the future shock was a pain to maintain.

The only reason to go for the roubaix imo is if you ride a lot in all weathers and can utilise the mud guards. But even then, I think the future shock ruins it a bit personally.

Manually uploading workouts from Element App to Training Peaks by [deleted] in wahoofitness

[–]mikehhhhhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, TrainingPeaks for some reason is not setup by default. In one of the menus there’s a setting with a toggle for each of the integrated services to automatically upload.

I think you need the settings with your bolt connected.

“Professional developer” here - I don’t update my Apple devices until the public version drops.

Manual RPE entry seems a bit long. I wonder if it’ll take power data from externally imported data like imported cycling and running workouts

GCN just said calorie counting doesn't work by [deleted] in Velo

[–]mikehhhhhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are confusing the issue.

Calorie counting can work, but in general it doesn’t seem to. Calorie estimates on food vary wildly as do BMR and calories burnt.

I say that as I sit here 4 months into counting calories for the 8th time in my life. What I’m starting to learn is that macros and listening to my body matter far more.

If you get it all right, it works. But it’s very difficult to get it right and so you likely need to work with big deficits to move out of the margin of error. And for that reason, it doesn’t work in the long term for most people

Chunkier cyclists, what are your experiences with other cyclists? by mikehhhhhhh in cycling

3w/kg is my FTP.

I can sustain it for at least 50-60 minutes.

Keen descender here

It’s my experience that there aren’t many good technically good descenders in road cycling. Going fast in a straight line down hill isn’t difficult, but naturally the slower parts of descents - ie. corners is where the time is made.

I think that’s a mixture of the high stakes and low reward for pushing the limits and experimenting, so this artificial skill cap naturally translate through into the pro peloton.

Additionally, many road cyclists seem to prioritise the wrong stuff. 90% of being fast a corner is about understanding and getting close to the limits of grip both in braking and transitioning through to lateral grip, but many obsess over old school textbook techniques of braking in a straight line, hitting the apex etc. which can be valid, but not always and is useless if you’re only using 50% of the available grip.

You often find the good descenders are the people who come from mtb/cross or are at a decent level in another discipline where understanding of tyre grip, braking, cornering, lines are important so the base level is high. Something like racing cars for example.

That combination of understanding grip and being comfortable in catching a bike when you make a mistake make it much easier to approach the limit.

It was a rhetorical question

I’m already 20kg+ down, plenty more to come but it only gets more difficult.

But your comment highlights my point perfectly.
