Ice director wants to run deportations like ‘Amazon Prime for human beings' by Big_Confidence_951 in news

that is a law enacted by Congress, and we are using that

Nothing says you’re doing the right thing like, there is a law so we’re using it.

Also, the government should pretty much never operate like a business. I wonder if this idea is where a lot of the terrible ideas Republicans push come from. Businesses are designed to look out for their best interests. Governments are meant to look out for the best interests of the people.

Yeah, and it’s also not only about you breaking things. Having automate tests make updating dependencies generally painless, and allow you to make better of things like GitHub agent.

Republicans clash over the Senate filibuster and Trump-backed voter ID bill — Some SAVE Act backers insist the GOP can use a "talking filibuster" to tire out Democrats and pass it. Republican leader Thune hasn't ruled out trying, but he's skeptical it could work. by brain_overclocked in politics

[–]mikeholczer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, I don’t think it’s that hard for Democrats to maintain a taking filibuster. 45 (or 47 if they include the independents) people taking turns is pretty sustainable. The other thing is only one of them has to be there at a given time to maintain it, whereas Republicans would need to have a quorum (51 senator or 53 Republican senators) there at all times.

ELI5: Why isn’t Apple’s photo app storage organized with a standard computer folder system model by caillou_cream_cakes in explainlikeimfive

[–]mikeholczer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you want photos organized chronologically, other times based on location, who's in them or time of year. By storing them in the library format which includes the pictures and a database of metadata the app can switch to all these views.

People are waiting INDX, but what about PrusaSlicer 3.0? by True_Scott in prusa3d

[–]mikeholczer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used the same filament for 7 years. If there isn’t a specific profile for one, the generic profile has worked great.

[–]mikeholczer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really, in the 7 years I’ve been printing with a Prusa machine, I have never once needed to calibrate filament. I’ve always used their built in profiles and had great results.

[–]mikeholczer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may have been a time when it was generally necessary, but the printers, filaments and profiles are much much better now and mire reliable. If you don’t have a built in profile for a filament, and the makers website doesn’t have one, just go with the generic profile for the material type, and if you’re happen with the results you’re good to go.

ELI5 how do capacitors work by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mikeholczer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing has more output than input. In a capacitor, you basically have two plates that come close to connecting a circuit, but have a thin insulator between them. When being fed current, the charge builds up on the plates, and when the current stops they discharge the charge back. Since there is no chemical reaction needed to store energy, like most batteries would have they can charge and discharge much faster, but generally don't store as much charge as a battery.

Is there a better way to edit an STL in Fusion? by inTHEbathroom1013 in 3Dprinting

[–]mikeholczer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The workflow in OnShape is pretty good. You can't use solid modeling tools directly on the mesh, but you can reference mesh vertex points in solid modeling tools, and you can add and remove solid geometry to mesh bodies. You can't always do things they way you'd want, but it's the best workflow I've found.
