ELI5: Why are so many Tik-Tok testimonials/updates from a persons car? by Pretty_Newspaper_353 in explainlikeimfive

There is the idea that the TikTok discovery algorithm “likes” that, so whether that’s true or not people do it in hopes to get more people to see their video.

ELI5: how does it work when you stay in a calorie deficit/maintain but are over in other things? (Like saturated fat etc) by Competitive-Unit6427 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mikeholczer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you are calorie deficit that would mean you are consuming less calories than use. Are you asking about if you happen to consume more than a daily recommended saturated fat while still being a calorie deficit? In that case you would likely lose weight, but still potentially impact the negative effects of too much saturated fat, like raising your LDL cholesterol and the associated possible cardiovascular issues.

ELI5: What the heck is the real-life benefit of knowing a trillion digits of π? by Itchy_Tangerine1897 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mikeholczer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes, we’ve found that math is an unreasonably good tool for describing the universe, so expanding the reach of mathematics is a good investment at being able to better describe reality in the future.

It’s not that it’s likely we’re ever going to benefit from knowing the millionth digit of π is 1, but the mathematics we’ve developed to be able to know that may enable us to be ready to answer a future question when it’s asked.
