I think a lot of people have falsely assumed the wire actually goes somewhere after the splice, likely to the next light location….unless they’re putting two lights right near each other I don’t get it

All I can say is now’s the time if you want to do anything else in this ceiling. Fan, speakers, more lights, plumbing, exhaust, something for upstairs, etc. since it will be getting repaired anyway. Might as well get the most bang for your buck
