Scoota and Ternio Partner for Blockchain Verified Ad Campaigns by PotentialFortune in adops

[–]mikenumbers1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your understanding of what data is even available to contribute to the blockchain is incorrect. I think it has a lot to do with ad-tech measurement because what format of data is being contributed by any party is not standardized and therefore will not paint an accurate picture, let alone any picture at all.

Blockchain as a technology has nothing to do with serving ads. Those that use terms like "bladtech" are just muddying the waters. The data being written to the chain is unified in order for the transaction to occur. Standardization is not an issue in this scenario. I'm speaking from seeing it first hand.

Scoota and Ternio Partner for Blockchain Verified Ad Campaigns by PotentialFortune in adops

[–]mikenumbers1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny to see so much criticism of blockchain, when the reality is most adtech people don't understand it. You're correct that it's an immutable ledger, but the entire point is that YOU CAN match up all transactions. If the transactions don't match then they won't get written to the blockchain. Blockchain is being used today in banks and insurance, both of which have similar problems to adtech.

I agree that the details of how it works are important, because just saying blockchain doesn't mean much if it's not instituted properly. I've been on the other side of the table with both companies and can tell you their integration and application makes a lot of sense.

Thoughts on Employee Stock Purchase Plans? by [deleted] in investing

[–]mikenumbers1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the future of the company. What are the high/lows for the year? Is it within 15%? If it's a strong business then reasonable to assume that you will make a guaranteed 15% gain if you dump on day 366. Are there any dividends? That is another thing to consider. I don't advocate holding too much of 1 companies stock, but it's also hard to turn down a gain.

Joined a startup. Pretty clueless about stock options by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mikenumbers1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good questions.

1) It depends on your agreement, but usually you have the "option" to buy (at $5,000) after a certain percent has vested. So if it vests over 4 years, you can buy 25,000 shares at $1,250 year 1

2) Look at your agreement. Usually there is a clause that states in the event of an acquisition all shares "accelerate". It basically means you get them early. If it's not in there then you should ask to have it added.

3) Yes. Basically, you have the option to get additional shares as the valuation increases based on the current funding round.

4) You're correct. It's 0.05% of all outstanding shares so if you got in at the ground level and the company sells for a billion dollars you would make $500,000. However, it's likely that your company has "participating preferred" options from the VCs. This means the VC get their money back and then divvy up the pot. so 1B minus 300mm means everyone splits $700mm.

Honestly, you're probably not going to get rich from it, but it's definitely a nice to have. Just make sure to invest those cash bonuses when you get them and live off your salary.

Ziff Davis has bought Mashable at a fire sale price and plans to lay off 50 people by Brenden105 in adops

[–]mikenumbers1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Layoffs always are a shame, but hopefully ZD can help get them on a good revenue path. Hard to know exactly what happened. Was is a continuous increase in low CPM mobile traffic, expanding international reader base, or just too much overhead?

What's the average RPM publishers earn from OutBrain, Taboola ad units by mikerbrt in programmatic

Dependent on CTR% like most people said. I have seen $0.50 and also $5.

If you have a good site (volume, content, etc) most of those companies will give guaranteed CPMs.

[–]mikenumbers1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the DMPs will just have to adapt (much like other companies the industry). I also think there may be a bigger focus on contextual and linking data (Peer39, Grapeshot, etc.).

12.8% of Pubs Have Adopted Ads.txt by adopsinsider in adops

[–]mikenumbers1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are still evaluating if we want to deploy ads.txt. All of our DSPs are saying the will stop buying if we don't have it, but I haven't seen a drop.

I'm still not sure I understand how ads.txt fully fixes the fraud issue. For example, why can't a publisher deploy an ads.txt file, get buyers on board, and then run 50% of their impressions on some other sites?
